Just started playing today
I made an elementalist, got to level 3, and jumped up to lvl 80 5v5 pvp.
I finished someone, capped a zone, but mostly I just got wrecked.
I feel like I am barely doing any damage to people, is it my weapon? or because I am not fully armored? as I only had the 2 pieces of armor from lvl 3?
I pumped my traits into my most used skill element and put 10% on my element damage, and cooldown, and utilized switching element types in combat while waiting for weapon skill cool downs, but still very weak, and pathetic. I don’t think my build was that bad, so there must be something I am doing wrong

It’s because you don’t understand everything (anything? after a few hours) that’s going on the game yet. Just play some more, particularly in PvE (it’s gentle). Like a LOOOT more so you understand what everything does.

For comparison, I’ve played over 3000 hours and still get wrecked by some players.

What did you expect? You can’t be a pro in just a day! You have the right idea on how to play, but you need hours and hours of practice just to get your skills into your muscular memory. You might want to:

- Pick a build here: http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki
You’re not forced, of course, but it might be easier if you’re new.

- Try to find a friend to duel with you. Practice is messy and people of every skill levels are together, so it’s a bit discouraging. Unranked is better, but you probably want to get your build figured out before going there.

- Not to be too kitten yourself. It’s ok to not roll over everyone in your first week. If it was, this game would be boring. Practice, and in no time, you’ll see noticeable progress.

Welcome among us and good luck!

hmmm, I dunno, I tried Warrior this time, I had a bit more survivability, but most of all it seems I was actually doing damage to things. so maybe just bad armor? or bad element build i guess? =/

There are several roles in PvP; there’s burst, sustain, bunker, and then there are sub-types such as mobile, condi and support. Each class can be built to one of these roles to a certain degree and success. I find that the most successful team composition (atleast in PUGs) is 2 sustain (balance of constant pressure dps and survivability), 2 burst, and 1 bunker.

Start by using an actual working build. You might need to try few different ones to see what you are most comfortable with. Once you do that, as you play more games you will get better and you will “get pwnt in 5v5” less and less.

Hey ho – and welcome to GW2… I was one of the few who gave you some feedback on the GW2 Guru, so let me try and get you started now…

First off, no, PvE stats and level do not matter in PvP… Your armour pieces (side helmet, shoulders and gloves), stats, level and the damage modifiers on the weapons are all normalized… In this respect, PvP is equal since there is no upper hand in stats and min-maxing…

Elementalists are actually quite hard to get into immediately in PvP…. Since you are however not inexperienced in MMOs, I would advise you to play a build like Hambow
It is a fairly straightforward build, does decent damage and is quite sustainable

The reason I would advise you to play a build like that is because all professions got multiple builds with multiple tricks to get them down… An Ele is really dependant on traits and combos to stay alive and do damage with – whereas a Hambow has a bit more room for error, and is more suited to get familiar with the professions in game…

Alternatively, if you are a big Ele fan, Staff Ele – It is not a build that has a ton of damage, but it is a bit less stressing to get into

Also, on every subforum there is surely a person willing to show you the ropes a bit for the profession you want to learn – or so, that is my general experience

Tried guardian this time, doing a bit better, I think my elementalist just sucked I guess.

I am a little disappointed in the score screen, I would expect more details like total damage dealt, total damage taken, allies healed, etc, How am I supposed to take competitive pvp seriously if there are no stats tracked to see who did what?

All you get is points captured, kills, couple of other things. =/

PvP in Guild Wars (series) is not something you can just dive right into and expect to be good at. You have to really understand your class or have the basic knowledge of the mechanics to be able to do a decent job.

As stated above, PvP in Guild Wars does not transfer over your PvE stats. PvP uses it’s own set of stats which can be found at the top of your screen while in the Heart of the Mists (PvP Lobby). You should see 2 icons, a helmet and two crossed swords.
You can still use your pve equipment, but it will be for looks only (armor and weapons, which is why you will see some people using their legendaries)

Click the Helmet Icon FIRST
Make sure you have the sigils you want to use
The Rune you wish to use (in pvp the one you chose applies to all armor pieces)
The Amulet you wish to use

The second icon on the left will take you to your traits, make sure they are the traits that you want to use. You can refund your traits by clicking the “Refund Traits” button at the top of that window.

Once those are done, make sure your utility skills are the skills you want to use.

If those are not the weapons you wish to use, you need to head to the weapon vendor and pick out the weapons that are suitable for your class that you wish to use. Equip those weapons and make sure your sigils are correct.

Once you are happy with everything:
Click the two crossed swords icon at the top of your screen:
Click Practice Custom Arena
Play a couple of games in there, make sure you are:
1) Comfortable with your setup
2) Like the way you are performing
3) Feel Confident to play with other people

Once all 3 of those are met:
Click Play Unranked Arena
Play a lot of matches here and see how you do. Unlike Practice Arena, you CAN NOT leave the match when ever you feel like it. If you leave a match while in progress you will be penalized (eventually).

If you still feel comfortable and are ready to really compete with others click “compete in Ranked Arena”
