i played a few matches this weekend and noticed a decent drop in the skill of players but also a drop of queue times.
normaly i have queue times in between 5-8min , and now its only 2-3min, im guess thats because of all the people that plays just on the weekend, so the queue time drops , but also the skil lvl because of the people that play just once a week

so my question for you guys is , whats more important for you? fast queues or better matches ? because i honestly would rather have queues 5-10min long over bad matches

i saw alot of posts from the devs where they always talk about the queue times, which is fine, no one wants a 20min queue, but isnt a 10min queue with a good match better then a 3min queue with a bad match ?

faster queue always better. we have life we have job. can’t sit at video game all day waiting for q pop wasting life. 10×10mins = 1h 40m waste of life. 10×2mins = 20 mins waste of life.

20 mins > 1h 40m

Dont know really, i have ques 1h almost , and then i get bored and i go unranked , then i get faster ques, but i also get players double capping close, and players camping close the whole game alone , making a 4vs5.
So i really cant answer such question.

I’d accept ~10 mins max Q times, I’d rather get a “good” game than waste a few mins in Q + 6 more minutes in a lopsided match.

i know what you mean , waiting for 10min while doing nothing is really terrible , most of the time when i queue i watch either twitch or some show on my second screen

but even then i prefer the waiting times over bad matches like vingador discribed

Its both,

You cant have it in between which is what they are playing at. You dont want a 8 min que to only destroy or get destroyed 500-150. You Also dont want a 1 min que where you can 1 vs 3 and win because thats just lame.

You also do not want a League system that is trying to create a 50% match rank system between 2 teams and have a PiP system to determine titles/rewards/ and symbols that show your PvP claim to fame.

If MM were better, queue times wouldn’t be so terrible, cos more people would stay in for the fun of it rather than stop Qing as soon as they reach whatever goal they have. At this point, since MM has been kittened for so long, it’ll be nigh impossible to convince fed-up pvpers to come back, so my guess is we’re stuck with garbage MM and more enticements for pve players to drop in and screw up match quality.

Obviously I’m not optimistic about where pvp is going, but I am hopeful they’ll figure out something better than this Year of the Ascension mess.

Anet made a heavy mistake with their pip/mmr crossover for the past 4 seasons that lead to a condition that created long queue times, poor representation of ranking, and poor matching. This lead to a decrease in overall pvp participation that furthered the problem.

Questioning which is better is an invalid question. We’re not here to choose between the two. If Anet holds true to their future attempt with season 5 to match based on MMR instead of pips, and allow pips to represent MMR, we will get shorter queue times and better matching at the same time.

I tend to agree that if MM were better queue times would naturally lower due to higher player population. One of the most frequent complaints all year has been poor match quality.

Last time I queued Ranked, it was like 11min before I just gave up and joined Unranked. Actually 10+min queues weren’t too uncommon all throughout the season, but once you’ve hit Legendary, there’s really no incentive to keep suffering that.

Higher quality games will drive more players to play which will shorten queue times. Reducing queue times only makes poor quality games which drive people away and therefore increase queue times, which again need to be shorted, leading to poorer games. It’s a downward spiral. Anet NEEDS to be make games more fun and better quality, or else more players will leave and queue times will never be short again.

Ohhh yeah, I overlooked that. I think I’ve only seen an average queue time that high once before.

And when 8 of those 10 matches are pure garbage because the matchmaker is pure garbage, you’re looking at a total waste of around [10×10min matches=100min PLUS 10x 2min queues=20 mins: 120 minutes total waste for 2 good matches.

There needs to be a happy medium, but in order to get a happy medium they have to improve the quality of the matches so it’s not “wait 2 minutes for a guaranteed crappy match or wait 10 minutes for only a 90% chance of a crappy match”

Both are very important.

However, if only one is possible…

Fast queues with games that aren’t worth playing are worthless. All this will do is cause the top percent of players to stop playing. And then the next top percent of players will stop playing. Eventually, basically no one skilled is left.

Slow queues with good games won’t cause massive bleed-off of players. However, you’ll almost certainly get slow bleed-off of players from all skill levels, because no one enjoys long queues. The ability to PvE/WvW while queued might help with this, but the queues are long enough that at least I want to change maps a lot of the time… But for some reason, that’s not possible, even though waypointing within the same map is okay (which kind of removes the justification of “some people load SUPER slow and might miss their queue, and those people aren’t smart enough to just not change maps while in queue so everyone must suffer”).

If 8/10 matches are pure garbage i would quit that game then and don’t play. Because i play for fun not for frustrations and full of stress. Also it would be bad on your mental health if you cant controll the stress of 8/10 bad matches in a row. I also can get stressed a bit when someone just jump on my necro and i die in like 2 sec without having a chance to fight back. As never played a pvp game before gw2 where i played a dark magic class and died in 2 sec when some of other classes jump on me and don’t have a chance to fight back or defend myself. But can keep it at control. Matchmaking need some form of class comp balance but thats it.

Another way for more balance is the system should make sure both teams have same amount of bunker like dps and same amount squishy as hell dps. If one side have more heavy survivability dps other team gets about 2 squishy dps. The team with more heavy survivability dps wins. The matchmaking have to solve that issues. So the key for easy success in game especially if you play solo. Play a dps that have bunker like survivability or play a dps that can finish others in 2-3 sec. I play necro but this would be the last one i reccommend for beginner/avarage players as you have to solve a lot of hard and bad situations and think alot and run back from spawnpoint, teammates most of the time don’t care about you if you gets team that have hard focus necro tactic. So yeah key for success play what heavy!

We cant’ forget how toxic the 30s queue times were when Anet implemented their “low threshold” algorithm way back when. Queues were fast yes, but matchmaking quality was at an all time low. Players raged.

Not that match quality mattered much in S4… we might as well have stuck with 30s queue times :p

With fast queues and bad matches many players will stop queuing after enough horrible matches. Than the player base drops and the queue times rises again. In the end we have long queues for bad matches.

If que times are too long people stop queuing.

So we need good matchmaking with acceptable queue times.
