To make this short, a lot of questions have been popping up around the various communities about eSports and sPvP support by ArenaNet (or lack of). It would calm a lot of nerves and questions if we could receive some updates on (at least):
I’d like to see how many people are still wondering about these topics as well as maybe an official word…
EDIT:
Compiled list of sPvP bugs – http://www.reddit.com/r/gw2esports/comments/zasau/improving_spvp_and_esports_on_gw2/

I am most definitely waiting on all of this. I don’t even care if it’s e-sport oriented. I just want all of these features to be in and good to go.
I am really interested to know specifically about the ranking system (and rough timetable on it)
This, I really want some answers to this, I don’t see myself playing GW2 in the long run if these things are not implemented, while I feel private rentable servers are secondary, a ranking systeam is mandatory for any sort of pvp community to form.
You can’t have good people crushing newbies forever, good people will get bored of the lack of competition, newbies will be frustrated by not having a fair chance at the game.
Yep; It’s a little frustrating to be sitting here waiting for information on these features, let alone the features themselves. For all the talk about eSports in the months leading up to launch, it’s been a disappointing few weeks in that regard.
There’s never going to be a better time than now to build a competitive scene in Guild Wars 2. If people decide to move on to the next big thing because of their frustrations with the current state of things here, it will be that much harder to bring them back (if they can be brought back at all).

i’m going to go ahead and guess they aren’t focusing on PVP (yet) because, well, let’s be honest, most people are going to spend 90% of their time doing PVE content.
just wait and see.
In my opinion, there’s been a fantastic response to the PvE-side of problem, while sPvP has gotten minimal attention. This isn’t exactly fair as there is a pretty big player-base that only plays for sPvP, not to mention it’s a huge feature of the game.
“When it’s ready” isn’t really a viable response anymore, especially when tournaments just started to work properly after several hours (days) of downtime.
Definitely interested in these items. Hoping to see these implemented in the future.
“must-have” features to start talking about gw2 being an esport.
Yes! Anet really need to adress these things as soon as possible. Atleast let us know they are working on it!
(This is all about 5v5’s)
Guild Wars 2 needs private lobbys. Skirmishes are currently impossible, if two teams want to play against each other they have no way to. This hinders the best teams from getting better and it also eliminates things like IRC skrim leagues, the bread and butter of many competitive games.
If not private lobbys some kind of ranking system. The very best teams should be able to play matches against other good teams, and the new/bad should play against other similar skilled teams. Not a solo based matchmaking/rank, its a team game the ranking should be team based, a Team Ladder. The best teams will rise to the top of the ladder and be more likely to play against other teams high up on the ladder. (ala. GW1’s GvG). This rank doesn’t even have to be visible to the players, it just would help teams not get put into one sided matches.
Spectator mode. Although not necessary to actually make the game competitive it certainly helps make it more popular as it gives a much better way to watch the game.
Private lobbies are an absolute must, without them there are no tournaments, no skrims, only random matches. Ranking would make random matches more enjoyable, and spectator mode would make tournaments more watchable. Hopefully these features come soon, as without them real competition is pretty much impossible.

Please use this thread, it makes a stronger argument when everyone is consolidated. sPvPers have been sitting without much information for a long time now.
I agree with all of these. If ANet are interested in making GW2 more of an esport, these are pretty much essential. Some sort of elo system that’s per-player or per-team would be ideal. Spectating is also a great idea: it’s becoming a necessity in most other esports-focused games.
It would ease a lot of people that are in for the long haul of this game to get an answer. It’s obvious you guys are fixing PvE and many appreciate it. We just want the same transparency with PvP oriented stuff as well.
Cannot agree with this more please can we get an update on this?
The game desperately needs a ranking system.
I’m not sure about spectator mode, I want at the start of a match the possibility to decide if I want to be spectated or not.
I don’t want be ever spectated without choice.
Fully agree with the OP, our guild is PvE / PvP, and while the PvE is great we have players who just play for the PvP side. We have a dedicated team of PvPers, and we love the pvp so far but without all the things the OP mentioned this may get stale very quickly.
I totally agree with OP, ANet has to give us PvPers some love : <
I totally agree and would love some clarity on those points. The gameplay is amazing, but it could be so much better with a better system backing it up.
I am also waiting for more information about what they are going to do with pvp. It seems clear the current tournament system is still heavily in development seeing as it has barely any of the features it should have.
Although I also think adding these features is no reason to delay the whole game so that’s why they probably shipped without it.
Tournaments need some love <3
ArenaNet needs to make some adjustments, but this game has the potential to beat out WoW as the primary PvP MMO of choice.
Agreed, we need some changes, for the PvP community the game is feeling old without any feature that let us move foward as an eSport, IMO the most wanted features right now are Custom Tournaments & MMR/ELO System.
I feel like arena.net stopped at 90% of making a really good PvP-Game. The things mentioned in this thread really needs to be added soon before the hardcore PvP-Players stop plaiyng this game.
ANet have stated they intend to implement a ladder for sPvP, and that they intend to allow people to rent their own personal custom servers (for cash money) to allow them to practice and scrimmage at will.
These things are definitely coming. The game’s been out for a week, and they have a very full plate, but these features are definitely on their way.
Make this happend! We need something to drive uss foward, a goal, get motivated! Something to drive ’’bad’’ players to get better, this will help gw2 alot! Rewards for the top teams etc! This will atleast help me get motivated and work even harder to achieve my goal!
Think this thru !
Make this happend!
Make gw2 competetive!
I wonder why there is no feedback from arenanet about esports things … didnt they say “we want to be big in esports” ? So why is there nothing new about that ?
We need answers arenanet !
Updated the OP with a compiled list of fixes/bugs/complaints for anyone who wants more in-depth knowledge.
at least a “we are working on it” from anet will be great.
Hopefully we will get a response from the PvP Team soon….
I agree with everything in this thread. I really hope these things don’t get left too late, or the opportunity to really engage the community on a significant level may be lost.
I’ll just add my voice to everything that has been said above.
I also fully agree with you. They seem to think they have enough time for doing so, but they really don’t. Most of the teams are just going to abandon it, and they will probably never come back, even if these things are going to be added later on. I mean, this game really has potential, but they need to work on it, and not just ignore whole aspect of their game, which was, I have to say, one of the main selling points of this game. I really feel disappointed and fooled, as there are no news, nor responses from Anet employees, regarding this topic.
It should be common knowledge that PvE is the majority playerbase of most MMO, and I assume GW2 as well, and there have been a lot of issues they’ve needed to focus on with a higher priority to begin with. Once things settle down a bit, if they haven’t addressed a lot of the S/T-PvP issues, then I would start worrying. However, that little bit of grace period time is starting to reach its limits with a lot of people, so some info soon would definitely be good on what to expect.
Also adding my “voice” in. What gives, ArenaNet? Starting to think you guys were just driving up the pre-release hype train by constantly throwing out the “e-sports” buzz word.

I love pvp too, but please, let them do what they need to do to ensure the game survives long enough for PvP to matter.

The issue is that the sPvP side of the table has been broken and unattended to, significant problems such as tournaments not working and missing chests took a long time to be acknowledged and fixed. Coupled with the lack of missing features, and lack of communication about the status of said features/state of sPvP—is enough for any person who solely plays PvP to be worried.
Things have settled, and for a game who wants to have eSports as a priority—I’m not seeing it.

If they continue to neglect the PvP community, the s/tPvP portion of the game, the portion that will “survive” the longest in the longrun, will not survive. People will get bored with GW2 lack of competitive PvP features in place (completely embarrassing what we got for a game that was touted as an “e-sport”) and they will migrate to other games with more competitive features and some if not many of these players won’t ever look back to GW2.

Agree, we need at least Custom Tournaments to move on, ranking wont do much really, dota 2 is highly competitive without any ranking system, but the ability to create tournaments let organizations to create tournaments and leagues.
I’m sure they’re very busy. We will get an update to all of your questions, it’s just a matter of time. Hopefully not too long.
They just announced in another thread that they would add a feature to allow guilds to purchase private servers. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/How-to-rent-a-pvp-server/first#post57482
I think we all agree that these need to happen, since beta, I have pondered about making sPvP better, and this puts it all on one list, lets push for this and hopefully we will get it implemented!

This is not an announcement, they are repeating themselves.
+1 confirm or add these things Arena.net please

You guys have blatantly missed the point we were hitting on. There are still bugs in PvE (high level DE bugs to start), which as stated, has a bigger community going for it than PvP at the moment. Should the PvE draw fail, PvP would soon follow. Also PvP hasn’t been left out in the cold either. They have fixed the tourny rewards (as you stated) and did some slight skill balancing (see Guardian).
Just like everything else in this game, things take time. Just chill out and practice. I agree that a word or two would be nice, but I’m not losing my marbles because “things aren’t getting done” when they kinda are.

This would be ok if there’s only 1 big team of developers doing all the content, wich is not the case, they have a PvP Team, a Balance Team, PvE Team, etc etc, everyone should be working on their own area with no problems now that they don’t have any massive login/connectivity issues like we did the first weeks.
any answers from the developers?
Few issues that need to be addressed.
Arenanet has been quoted as saying they are aiming to make GW2 an E-Sport. However, BOTH brands of PvP in this game lack any shape/form/resemblance of an E-sport.
There is no paid tournaments at this point, which just seem to give better loot? than our current free mode. There is no ELO/MMR system. There is no ladder to climb, and therefore no way to measure one’s skill and improvement as a player over time. There is no dueling, no spectator mode, and a progression system based entirely around cosmetics.
While this is fun, at least at first, it doesn’t hold up. The entire point of an MMO is Progression… To feel like we are getting better. This is established by leveling up, gear, appearance, etc. The one area where you would think we would need it most, (Ranked/Competitive/Structured/E-Sport whatever PvP) it’s entirely absent.
I’m here for the long haul, but these are things that must be addressed before the PvP in this game goes anywhere.
-ELO/MMR System. Otherwise the best team NA will be in a pool with the randoms who don’t coordinate at all. Without this, there is also no “proof” of one’s improvement. I would love for the matchmaking system to be similar to hot join, but only last for one match. Tournament style ELO system would be clunky.
-Spectator mode. Watch friends games, watch big tournaments, etc. Crucial to make this game an E-Sport.
-Downed state needs to be modified. Currently its too strong. I would be perfectly fine if it were completely removed in ranked play. Otherwise, lower the damage output, remove the interrupts/stealths, and replace them with a [Fury] buff or something along the lines, depending on the class. There are no second chances in PvP.

Downed state is fine, some classes are lacking good skill to use on downed state. Agree with the rest.
/sign as an E-sporter player.
→ buyed GW2, only to play sPvP
→ expected something like Valve Dota2 standard… but its not even close :-(
→ Arenanet, where is your support for sPvP ? the competitive comunity part waits…
