Ok , so I played this game for like 1 month. I came here for PvP and since the very beginning I started to looking for some PvP fun.

What I heard about the game, before I joined:
1. Multidimensional PvP !!!!
2. Balanced PvP !
3. Best PvP !
and so on…

How I feel after a month ?

1. Dumb PvP- smash keys to win. I even made some experiments.
A. Coordinated attack with wise use of skills
B. SmashKey Attack without any coordination
Effect: No difference

2. Gang Wars 2
A. No matter how long You play or how good You are, You will get owned by Gangbangs. Its hard to win 1vs2 making it impossible in 1vs3. Ye ye ye all nubs will start
yelling at me “Its a teamplay game !” You are no God anymore and we nubs will pwn Ya!!!!

3. Lack of motivation to play
for “cosmetic gear” ? Why ? Each powergamer will sacrifice nice look for more power.
I belong to that kind players, who sacrifice their time for power. And here ? 5 days im MMO and I can be top-notch PvP geared in all aspectes. For a price of few gems I will achieve almost everything as PvP player who spent half a year here, trying to master his skills.

4. Skills ? You mean all of those red wheels all around ? What kills me ? Most of the times those red wheels that keep appearing here and there. Is it very bad red wheel or just giggling red wheel ? No one knows I suppose. Especially in massive battles where red wheels pwn everyone without an exception. And hey ! to place a red wheel You just need to…. guesss what ? yes.. You are right – Smash keys… You will always drop a red wheel of some kind.

I played a lot of sPvP finishing at top spots after like 3 days of playing. What to do to win ? Running is Your answer… You just need to avoid all kind of combat and just sneak into their points… and if You see them coming run to Your mates to check if Your zerg is bigger than theirs zerg. If Your zerg is bigger- progress- if theirs- retreat.

I expected a MMO PvP game and what I received is a primitive key-smash game that lacks any depth and doesent motivate me to play PvP at all.

PvE is fabulous and outstanding I must agree. But all kind of PvP in this game is simply boring, repetitive, frustrating.

It’s a newb friendly PvP game. But if I want to play casual games I will go for my Xbox Kinect and play some Kinect Sports or Fruit Ninja. But when I enter a PvP game I expect challenge and reward for my time spent there. Here I can gain nothing except of frustration and lack of motivation.

Don’t play wvwvw or 8v8 hotjoin.
Don’t play thief.

Actually he is quite right once you learn your class its just smashing keys with almost no brain……..its something like diablo 3…….what skill you need to press basilisk venom + f1 = 1/2 or 2/3 of your opponent HP are gone then press haste and 222222222222 owned

You two should make a video of this duel. Put linkin park to the back ground of it and slow it down every time there’s fat numbers on the screen.

Hmm yeah, because it’s a good idea to “smash” your ranged cripple attack, allowing your opponent to run away since you wasted it on your “smashing” or use a water healing skill as an elementalist just do a bit more damage, or throw all your wells at once as a necromancer…

Why does a joke of a post deserve a serious response? There are many valid complaints about the state of PvP but I don’t think anyone with real experience with the game thinks you can get the same results with button mashing as with thoughtfully using your abilities. It might work against bad players but it won’t against people who know what they are doing.

I will duel him if he really wants to try to “prove” something, but I know that 1v1 doesn’t mean much in this game in the overall scheme of things.

Sorry but this is wrong. If you think you’re anywhere near “skill-capped,” then you’re just being delusional. I don’t mean to be mean, but it’s just the truth.

I would like to see you go up against top teams in paids and see how you do. If you’re not playing against top players, than who are you to say this game is “whoever smashes their keys faster wins?”

You’ve been playing 8v8 pub games. Go play a 5v5. Previously 5v5s were tournament only, but as of a couple weeks ago 5v5s are available in quick match.

If more than 2 people fight you, their team is going to lose control of a point.

Okay so, how many tournaments have you won? How many qualifying points do you have? What team do you play for? Can I see some footage of your incredible skills?

I’ll answer for you : 1, 0 , none, no.

You don’t know anything about this game, go get good and well known then MAYBE you can argue about how “time spent = better gear” is such a good pvp design

We need to get something straight. People with skill are not “scared” of people with gear. Noobs are scared of people with gear. If you actually pvp for more than 1 hour every 2 weeks in an mmo, you will have gear to compete. Real people with skill like gear cause it helps people with lack of skill compete thus providing us real people with skill a challenge.

Remember that. Skilled players like a challenge, and are not scared of people with a little more gear than them. People who preach we should have no pvp gear are really just casuals who were never going to compete with us anyway.

as an experiment garathorn, you should join solo for 5v5 tourneys. if the game is as random & keyspammy as you claim, you should have little problems getting to kyhlo. surely teamwork has nothing to do with this game.

I play quite a lot of PvP, am currently rank 28 ( not impressive, I know, but probably top 5% of GW2’s total population ) and I’m against pvp gear because it doesn’t add anything to the game and comes at the price of an artificial barrier of entry and ruined Esports potential. If you see no point in playing a game if it doesn’t give you “+x for each y” you might wanna go back to games that embrace the skinner box mentality more thoroughly.

It’s very obvious, when reading your post, that you’ve only played WvW and 8v8 sPvP. Both of these games require very little skills, as your opponents will often play with low level/new/bad builds, and have next to no experience fighting 1v1, because they are use to following a zerg. Try some tournament sPvP for a little while.

As kasma says, if you haven’t tried tournament pvp you’re missing out on the actual skill based pvp, try it out and then make angry posts on the forums.

The pvp in this is way more balanced than it was in warhammer, rift, or world of warcraft in those games first 6 months.

People who preach there should be no pvp gear (cosmetics aside) simpy have more than three brain cells to rub together and realize if you want competitve skill based PvP that means a level playing field.

Rather than making PvP for Pvers such as games like Rift where the PvP is dire, because a good 1v1 with two closely matched players skillwise ends up a one sided boring faceroll (for both players) if they are mismatched in terms of level of gear.

The other funny thing, is what would one duel prove anyhow? It’s way too small of a sample size to demonstrate anything. And you just know that he’s gonna be the sort of guy that if you narrowly win, he’ll say you’re lucky, if he narrowly wins, he’ll trash talk and act like he dominated you. Who the hell is gonna take their time to find out his name, set up a time and place, try to set up a hotjoin game and be there at the right time, fight and hope no one joins and interferes, etc; all to try to “prove” something to some whiny internet blowhard that will likely make excuses if they lose anyhow? The people sticking up for him because no one has taken him up on his duel offers really do have room temperature IQs, and adolescent mentalities.

I too am a bit disappointed with the pvp although i haven’t done a lot.But that is because what i have done hasn’t thrilled me.
A player that knows his stuff will own you.There is skill.
But in warcraft you couldn’t really own even the nubest of nubs without trying(gear being equal).
But in this game i find myself owning people with simple combos and not really understanding the class.There seems some builds and skills where spamming and randomly dodging can get you a win.
I do enjoy some pvp but i feel there is a lack of options.Warcraft just has some many game types and bgs.
I do like the game though,especially the pve side but i think pvp is a bit lacking.

What I think is that this games combat is pretty easy and someone who had gaming skills could easily play this game for a week and be good enough to play tourneys. IMO.

That’s like saying once you learn to play Dota, it becomes about who can press their keys faster, or once you learn to play Counter-Strike, it becomes about who can press their keys faster, etc.

That is the very definition of a SKILL-BASED game.

What you guys want is a game based around gear grind and not player skill.

For example: If player 1 plays for 1000 hours and player 2 plays for 300 hours, player 1 will always win because he has better gear, even though player 2 is more skilled. Now THAT is a game for casuals. There are plenty of those around, so go play them instead.

This game is not skill based just because the odds are even gear wise. The next level of being at a disadvantage is build and item set ups that counter yours, this game is all about finding the same tanky/dps build mixture. You can’t out maneuver anyone because all the attacks are basically homing, your auto attack rewards you a ton on most professions, your ability to dodge is very limited unless you spec into it which results in sacrificing other needed aspects of the meta.

There’s really no hope for this game being E-sport or skill based, it’s pretty boring to watch the videos and it’s almost possible to kill someone with your eyes closed.

I’d like to earn the gear by playing games.Not a massive grind but a progression that was fairly fast, say a couple of weeks and you got stronger with each piece you got.
Some would call it a grind and it would make it unfair at first but it gives a reason to A. get to 80 and B. do pvp.
Jumping in with full equal gear was something i thought would be a good idea and maybe in wow it would be, as there are a bigger variety of bgs and modes.But the pvp gets old fast in GW due to fast paced games and the small number of maps.
I’m no wow fanboy.I don’t play atm but i wish GW would take the best aspects of that game and it would be the best mmo ever.
Just my opinion and just what would improve the game for me but others will disagree and thats fine.

So timing and movement don’t play a role in this game? How does a game like Dota, for example, require more skill than GW2 (where you have far less to manage in terms of keybinds and movement)?

Your opinion is based on nothing. The skill floor in this game is the same as in any other MMO/MOBA.

“Simple” =/= “easy.” Yes, there are aspects of this game that are “simple,” like how many skills auto-target or are AoE. That doesn’t mean the entire game is easy. In fact, 90% of players would tell you that PvP suffers from being too unfriendly to casuals.

There are also problems with the feedback the game gives its players. Anyone who creates a thief and jumps into an 8v8 could be fooled into thinking the game is “easy” because he’ll get a lot of glory. Put that same player in a free tourney and he’ll still think he’s good, but he’ll probably think his teammates are bad. Put that thief in a premade vs premade and he’ll realize he has no earthly clue what he’s doing. But the point remains, he’ll think he’s mastered the game by level 5 at the latest.

The alternative is also true: any player who creates an engineer will jump into a hotjoin and think he’s awful. Then it will start to look like the game is really easy—for the other professions. Then he’ll join tournaments, and again see the same professions on top of the leaderboards, and think that the balance is horrible.

It’s a difficult problem to solve, but I think over the next several months things will really start looking up.
