spvp + new players = bad times (for them)
“This mode is for practice”
Yeah…no…no it is not. Hot join is just that…a quick fight with little waiting. There is no “practice” until you fight with your guild hall’s arena for practice and learning.
Any true PvP player enters PvP expecting no mercy. New or veteran players of any game, anywhere. You join a new game, you get destroyed a few dozen times till you learn your mechanics and your enemies mechanics enough to read them and get the drop on them. Just how it is.
There is no “practice” until you fight with your guild hall’s arena for practice and learning.
Too bad the arena uses PvE gear so it can’t be used for PvP practicing. :/

Sure it can, just have to step out of the mists from time to time. Hitting 80 is not hard in PvE and grabbing some exotics is also not hard. That’s all you need to use the arena as a perfect training ground.
I’ll play every game mode (time allowing). Never understood this obsession with never stepping out of a game mode…that’s so very limiting. If I wanted to never step foot out of small team PvP I’d play a game where that is all it had. No, I’m not great at it all, but I do enjoy my time.

Stats will still be different…. I mean you can get close, but it’s not the same.

Oh I know, but it will be good enough or practice and learning the ropes. Get a friend of the class you have issue with and play punch dummy for them so you can learn the tells for their skills and how best to dodge/deal with them. Do some duels to see how well you can work with your spec in dealing with those attacks. Move tot he next class when you think you have it.
Good enough for practice purposes. If you want real fights you would just jump back into the mists anyway.
i think
there should be a hotjoin for only rank 1 – 30 players
ofc that still can make quite some difference between 1 and 30
but
it removes the TONS of mostly r70-80 players who really farm new unexperienced players in hotjoin nowadays
the high rank players stack on 1 team every match and just destroy the other team…
new players cant even really learn their class… since they get instakilled 90% of the time… they cant even learn to counter
and they dont even try to learn often because they stop with PvP after getting so demoralised by this bad system in Hotjoin
so i think this hotjoin for lowranked players only would be a nice thing
ofc veterans with alt accounts can still farm them but it would still reduce the amount of people who actually do that to new players a lot i think

How are you going to get better unless you fight people better then you are occassionally?
Some people learn. Some people don’t. I got my kitten kicked gratuitously for as long as I can remember. Then, something more or less clicked and bam, pulling 200 points average without point kitten.
Orangensaft, you just highlighted my primary problem with hotjoin as it stands…you get to pick your team. Hotjoin should be just that, hot join. Meaning you click join and it throws you on a team, you get no choice. And frankly if you leave the match you should be locked out of spvp AND wvw for an hour. Don’t want the lockout than play to win regardless of what team you are with.
Hot Join is terrible for new players. There should be a big sign on it that says, “Beware: Veteran players farming map. You will be owned. Enter at your own risk. Go to Unranked for a real match.”

fighting r80 people as r1 is not what really helps you to get better though…
you gotta learn the basics at least first vs similar skilled players a
nd then learn from fights vs a bit higher skilled players .. look at what skill combos they use etc
but when fighting r80s they often kill you so fast you dont even know what happens
and even if you could learn it that way if you are patient and look at all animations (that would require you to have already played the enemy class though to know what skill that is that they use… which basically NO new players does… actually many ne w players even just play 1 class only for some time)
even then it would take you long time and if you just get completly rekt all the time you would have just no motivation at learning cause feeling absolutely no fun in PvP

That norn is terrifying. I’d sooner run back to base than fight that
I’ve hated pvp since launch but came back about a month ago and really started trying to get better at it. In GW2 pvp combat is often over really fast for someone, usually they watch their opponent dance around while comboing them in such a way where fighting back seemed futile and there was nothing they could do. Then after losing they go into downed state (still hate this) where they get to die again. This happens 5-10 times and that player no longer wants anything to do with pvp.
This is especially frustrating in WvW small scale fights where your opponent is most likely invisible 90% of the fight while dunking you or reviving their allies. (still hate this) If you do get the upper hand they’ll just invis/movement skill away rapidly.
So there are lots of “things” that suck in pvp and if you don’t switch to doing that best “thing” then gtfo. Right now dealing with the “thing” is going to meta battle and picking the cheapest class/combo you possibly can and using it. Because anything else is gonna get kitten on.

No self respecting veteran takes hotjoin seriously. OP prolly encountered trolls not good enough to play ranked/unranked. It’s a terrible game mode for experienced players.
It’s where a veteran goes if he hates himself and have given up on life. Everything about it drives me nuts, including the so called vets you described

this should exist tbh
still, gw2 has a lot of skills that you have to learn & use at a fast rate. it’s not a terribly accessible game for pvp. you can get killed so fast.

In hotjoin you only learn how to cap a point with 5 people, never defend, fight builds that don’t exist not even in elohelljust zerg in a group, how to join the winning team, etc.
Hotjoin is the worst place you can go to if you want to learn the game. If you want to learn and escape this toxic hellhole then go unranked.
You should have told him:
“HOTJOIN IS kitten JUST DONT DO IT GO UNRANKED”
premade vs random is still more fair.
Hotjoin are mostly 4v5 even 3v5, people die once and leave (often leave before getting stomped).
Then winning team wait at the other team spawn and farm.
You speak like in other games there is not that problem.
Always, in every single game, when you go to pvp you die 80% of the times why you don’t know all the mechanics, the skills, the builds.
It’s been always like that.
For shure, hot joins can be used only for practice. I use them only for practice why I know that there’s newbye there that try to practice.
yes, queue for 3 minutes is a bad thing, make you wayt 2-3 minutes for a match of 10 is a really bad thing.
But I still think that hot joins are more for practice than for play.
if you know how to play just play seriously and play unranked and ranked.
I downloaded game last night and figured i’d buy the expansion out of boredom. All I’ve been interested in was the small scale pvp and what is horrible is a player who hasn’t even played a full 24 hours still leads the team in points. I don’t see a reason why a level 3 should even be in a team composition of level 80’s let alone be on top of the board for those matches.

1) Personal score means nothing. It’s confusing, i know, but it really doesn’t matter at all.
2) PvE level doesn’t matter in PvP. Many top players play in lvl 2 characters because they have no reason to level them.
3) Hotjoin/practice mode/game browser/custom arenas, whatever they are called now, is not real PvP, those lvl 80s were likely PvE players farming daily achievements.
In general, play unranked and ranked.

I think ranked and unranked is what jumps out to us noobs, I don’t even know what the hotjoin or game browser is… just when entering lobby it has two options unranked and ranked (greyed out) as I guess it’s pvplevelbased?
Personal score not meaning anything…. my hopes and dreams of being a legit player have been crushed. Thanks for that info tho!

Nooo…no thank you.

AND ranked…
AND unranked….
Basically…if you aren’t there till the end for any PvP you just shouldn’t que up for anything, period IMO.
Hahaha forget it OP, Arena wont read this. This is the problem I’ve been emphasize aeon years ago. The stronKkk will always prey on the weak, simple as that.
Solution is simple actually, just let new players to join hotjoin matches from Rank 1 to Rank 15 ONLY, segregating matches through Rank etc. etc etc
Its just weird, Arena do not allow new players to open lvl 50 fractal instantly, but allowing them to get slaughter in veteran pvp matches and chase them away. Logic of arena only they know.
At the end of the day, a rabbit shouldn’t be roasted by a dragon.

I can see why you’d say this of course with hot join but there are some differences. Me personally I like to spectate a match before I join in for a few reasons. One if it’s a small number of people I always check to make sure they aren’t dueling first, so as not to interrupt them. Also I like to see what I’m up against first before I join, not that it normally affects my choice but if I’m on a glass thief I may not want to fight against a team with 3 mesmers for instance lol. The only hing that really bothers me about hot join is how petty it can be. I always join the losing team for instance because I play for fun, most people don’t but hey I don’t really mind hat. What I do mind is when one team starts losing then one of their members goes to spectate and waits until they can join the winning team. Had this happen earlier this week and the guy even got switched back twice due to auto balance yet still switched back, that’s just what’s sad to me. If they could fix stuff like that I’d love hot join even more now lol.
As for new players yah it sucks, but sometimes it depends on the matched players. OP mentioned the new guys team was getting camped, I refuse to camp a team when we already know we’re going to win as it’s honestly just bad etiquette. On the other side of these kinds of players there are some helpful ones out there though. I’ve actually started up a few conversations in the past with players who had trouble after a match and took them to my guilds private arena where we could practice until they felt more comfortable and had a decent build. Even if they don’t get this though everyone has to start somewhere and like it or not e first little while is gonna be tough. Whoever wants to get through it will though
