tPvP Team Compositions
well if you make it to the last round, you better have a mesmer on your team…or you lose. /balance
It’s indeed possible to win by using any team composition, it comes down to player skill on given profession and by implementing simple counter strategies.
Just today I was able to use a strategy on Foefire Map to beat a full guild team with my PUG team which was using your common : 2xguardian-mesmer-thief-warrior.
I was playing with a ranger-2 eles ( one was me) – necro and guardian, the strategy was simple…..don’t allow them to play together as team, now got another strategy to test on Kylo against the bunker guardian on clocktower and mesmer portal
I used to complain regarding the same thing but in this last couple of days I have found decent players with whom I can try different strategies following the old GW1 mindset : balanced > gimmick.
If you can’t bring down the wall….just go around it
well if you make it to the last round, you better have a mesmer on your team…or you lose. /balance
I can assure you it’s more than possible without a mesmer ;P
I can attest that any combination can do well as long as you fill the roles required by the gamemode. (Bunker, Off Roaming, Def Roaming) This isn’t an issue with class balance. It’s an issue with tPvP being an objective based gamemode.
My normal tourney team changes professions constantly, and we definitely don’t have an “ideal” team comp. Team coordination and communication goes a llloooonnnngggg way.
I found this thread, so I’m trying to avoid creating a new thread about team compositions.
So what are some “general role” compositions. So far I’ve really only heard of the “bunker” and “roamer”. What are some other roles that go with a team?
Which combinations of them seem work well (not looking for the “perfect team”)?
Which roles are the roles that you should probably have, or else you are going to have a rough time?
I do solo queue tournaments the majority of my time spent playing. I want to be able to ask my team what builds they are running, then I can choose a toon to switch to to best help the team.

we almost exclusivly run premades in [meth] or at least have like 4 groups of 3-4 each (based on people wanting to play with friends) and we use roles to generalize the “nitch” for a class slot but it seems like you can pretty much win with anything given the right players.
Bunker, ganker, roamer, burst, condi, control, and deny are all terms we use to identify a toons role.
It also doesn’t seem like a traditional role system, we have the most success"stacking" a mix of two roles and that’s it. Example burst burst control control + flex= burst control comp, like warrior thief engi necro or even thief thief engi engi (burst control with this is insane).
@Sezu, I normally run with 2 other people on TS3, and we have 2 pugs. Maybe thats the root of my problem
And @ klinch, I personally play Ele, Necro, Thief, Warr. Those are just the classes i know. My other 2 buddies i play with can cover a few other classes. One plays Thiefs, Ranger, Mesmer and the other Plasy Guard, Mesmer, Necro, Engi.
We switch it up constantly, but in the end it comes down to us not having a full team.
We try to adjust out classes based on what we see when we join (not only the other teams comp, but our 2 pugs aswell.)
But to try and answer your question, if no one will answer you when you ask, try and look at the weapons they are using. If you know anything about the classes it might tell you alot, same with tageting them and looking for any buffs/signets.

You should have 2 bunkers, or a bunker and a half-bunker so you have 2 players who are responsible for making sure you can hold 2 points without getting back capped. A ‘half-bunker’ would be a strong 1v1er with decent survivability, like a ranger or mesmer, or any necro build with plague form. Half bunkers can’t 1v1 forever or hold out as long 1v2 as a full bunker but they bring more damage to a fight. Usually your full bunker holds the point that requires the most babysitting, and your half bunker holds the off point and has some freedom to solo forest creatures or assist mid on guild.
After that most good teams hold two points and run 3 roaming team fight builds with high mobility, damage and teamfight presence to assist whichever of your two points gets attacked. The idea of “roamer” as it was envisioned during the early beta weekends is pretty much dead. It’s a waste of time to try to 1v1 a full bunker, or even a half bunker, to go for a 3 cap. In serious matches good teams only go for back caps if the point is completely open, and once they take it they usually either abandon it, or abandon the other side point and commit to holding the enemy’s point and mid.
The only other positions are basically specialty roles on khylo, which are treb user and treb shutdown. Every team needs an answer to portal repair mesmer on the enemy treb. Currently that’s either a tank staff ele that can kill the treb quickly without dying, or a thief that plays smart (hint: shortbow). For your treb you can either run portal mesmer (which stomps pubs, but good teams will still shut down most of the time) or you can have your roamers use the treb situationally, which has no ‘hard counter’ but requires your team to be in the right place at the right time to shut down the enemy treb while simultaneously winning team fights without auto-win treb support.

@ nurt
It’s the “you must bring a bunker” mentality that is making bunker bust comps so good.

I’m not going to argue that you NEED a bunker, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to bring just one. As a staff ele I provide heals, condition removal, boons, combo fields, and control. The fact that I’m hard to kill comes secondary to all of that.
Could you explain yourself a bit better?
Nurt gave a pretty solid breakdown.
@sezu
I was trying to say that comps that design their way around two bunker teams have been doing really well.
We ran one on wed and only lost one round.
I and my team have for each map different team comp. or either different skillset ups. In my opinion you have to do it.
@Anet give us plz templets to save skillsetups :| having 3 mesmers sucks :s

Meh, the above statement (the one about adjusting professiona) is something i hope they will change… Maybe i can live with teams switching professions between maps.. Maybe. (in my opinion you pick a eam and your stuck with it… No changing because some things work better on some maps then on other)..
Something that goes to far though is switching while in the games already.. Ow they dont have ant condition dmg, lets change to our bunker team. Ow, they have hose professions, lets counter them wih this..
Its ridicilous in my opinion… Why not yust give us a button which changes us to the profession most usefull at that time.
I say dont let people switch after they made the roster.. Make them pick characters which hey feel will do good in all maps instead of basing some tactics as bunkering, mesmer portals etc. On certain maps.

I completly agree!!!!!!! I have no idea why you can change once you are locked into the tourny. This is by far the first thing that shoud be changed about tPvP. And like someone else said…you have to adjust your team because the other team is doing it.
Then we will see who is better, when they have to pick a good comp and stick with it through 3 maps.

Oh I see, read it completely wrong. My team was running 2 bunkers for quite a while, but switched to using just one recently. As long as there is communication and rotation, the sheer offensive pressure we can put on the enemy is outstanding with just one.
We actually won an entire tournament, all 3 games, nearly 500-0 (except for the first map :/, which was like 500-25). Not saying this is much of an achievment since they were probably all pugs, but we did do it
Without writing a long general post, this is something I have noticed the best teams on Khylo have and it is a huge advantage:
A sustain staff ele to assault the opposing treb.
Anet got a lot of grief when they mentioned they were looking at ele defensive builds, but I don’t think they were wrong to do so. I’m not sure its possible for any class to 1v1 kill a good sustain staff ele in any situation giving them the easy kill on the treb with meteor shower and spammed water 1. My only hope when on the treb with my mesmer has been to cast moa while they are preoccupied casting the healing shower and hoping they don’t have a dodge left. (or are unaware)

I think a good happy medium would be having to stick with the same class/character but being able to pick between two builds.
But that’s not a new notion.
Well…
Sure, you COULD win tourney’s with probably any comp.
I CAN use a pocket knife to drive a screw into a board. Doesn’t mean it’s ideal or even advisable.
