The best thing about gw2 is if you have good players with you , you can run a myriad of builds.
Most People will bring a Guardian, because it does make things alot easier..
Portal mesmer running shatter 20/20/00/30
Pretty good start of any group, you then add the fillers, most played is probably Ele/thief/ranger, very solid comp G/M/E/T/R, Good necro is hard to find but if you get one and facilitate him they can be pretty disgusting as are engies..
My favorite comps are non guardian comps, more fun to play
Ele Mesmer Ranger Engi(necro) thief(Warrior)
No doubt having a guardian who can survive for a guaranteed 36~ seconds against 2-3 players makes the game easier though…
okay thanks so much, if i am looking into playing at high level. what class would be a sure bet (if i get good at it) for trying to find a group? and whats a good server? us
Anvil rock is the most populated server.. I play on blackgate.. it doesn’t actually matter for pvp you just get access to a slightly bigger pool of players in the lobby.. which means chat is slightly more spammed.
I personally love the mesmer above all else, but any class can be viable..
Guardians probably the most sought after though..
Guardian>Ele>Ranger>Mesmer> Epic necros/engis are always sought after… just very few of them around.
from what all ive watched it looks like engi is gimped but if they are good endgame for pvp i really enjoyed playing them just messing around
Play a ranger until the 26th.
Next faceroll class TBAed.
An old standard team would be like.
Guard, ele, mesmer, necro, theif.
nowadays you see stuff like.
ranger, ranger, ele,ele, guard.
Or mesmer, ranger, ele, guard, thief.
Engy ranger ele thief guard.
But basically you want a main bunker, and someone who can hold side point ( mesmer or ranger usually ). And a roamer, usually an ele. AFter that dps, which can be any mix of condition or power dps, MOST people use at least 1 power dps, be it thief , mesmer or warrior.
Engies are good, BUT you to be really good to be good with them. If your new to spvp in this game, and want to be able to reach a competitive level of play fast, engy is not the class for you.
its not the difficulty i am worried about, i really don’t wanna play a face roll class either. what class do you recommend then
Guardian/Thief: easy to pick up, good and easy to play very effectively in higher play with limited experience. Decent skillceiling.
Mesmer/Ele/Necro: harder to pick up at first, but very easy to play once you familiarize yourself with their unique mechanics. Very effective in higher play. Mesmer/Ele are more forgiving and have a bit higher skillceiling than a necro.
Warrior/Ranger: easy to pick up, very basic mechanics and effective at lower play. Limited by low skillceiling in higher play, lack of viable builds and often not as effective as alternative professions. They only shine in very specific situations.
Engineer: hard to pick up, but extremely effective when played well. Has both a high skillcurve and skillceiling. Often limited in his roles.
Usual team setup:
- Guardian (midpoint main bunker, alternative is healer-bunker ele)
- Thief (backstab burst roamer or stealth&condition mobile support dps)
- Ele (d/d sidepoint roamer-bunker or s/d tanky roamer)
- Mesmer (teamfight support, side-mid roamer)
- Necro (teamfight peeler, side-mid support dps/bunkerbuster)
Optionals:
- Ranger (treb/sidepoint bunker, teamfight support dps)
- Engy (sidepoint bunker or teamfight control/burst)
- Warrior (100b burst roamer, rez/stomp denial and support dps)

Hey, I mainly play an engineer in paid tournaments (and a couple other professions, but I enjoy engineer more). Engineers are extremely fun and can be very effective, although they’re generally considered to be pretty weak.
There are some bugs/quirks to navigate. There are also very few competitive engi players, so there aren’t many good streams/videos to learn from.
If those things don’t scare you off, go for it. Playing an engi is super fun and rewarding.
If you want to play a class that isnt considered to be a tad weak, and a class that isnt a faceroll class.
the middle of the ground classes are thief and necro.
Guardian is also super in demand, it will find you teams the easiest. But, playing a bunker guardian will take a little bit of pratice, its the least intuititive way to play, but isnt hard to master at all.
thanks so much, this is really helping me =) the gw2 community might be the nicest i’ve seen in mmos.
Keep in mind the PM I sent you sobbz. We have Psybunny saying Rangerins “easy to pick up, very basic mechanics and effective at lower play. Limited by low skillceiling in higher play, lack of viable builds and often not as effective as alternative professions. They only shine in very specific situations.” I would argue that the meta trap ranger build definitely is set up this way. You lay down traps and wait then hit them with your traps again. Beastmaster is pretty similar, you just kite and wait while your pet kills your enemy. However, playing a ranger I don’t run those cookie cutter builds and I am actually the treb killer/roamer/anti-DPS DPS/Rezzer (also denial)/stomper (also denial), and point holder when necessary as I can still win 1 on 1s and sustain in 2 on 1s and I almost have the mobility of an ele. I would say that build recquires a high skill cap. So do some other ranger builds. However, that could probably be said for many other professions as well. But from the rest of my experience with the other classes I’d say things are pretty spot on. Not having played them as extensively as my Ranger I can only assume that every class has builds with high skill caps that haven’t really been touched yet.
Am I good?… I’m good.
