Well… every day, almost every match there is either a random bloak who flames you, troll you, too eager to tear you down bit by bit or random AFK in either disconnection or can’t be kitten d playing the match because our team is under by 50 points.
people who talks kitten to you, blocks, you cant write back, unblocks me and then talks more kitten just to block me again. I swear, this is utterly kitten and they should be striked the hardest imo. people who can’t hold their rage are seriously pathetic. They make your play session the worst experience every single time.

My blocklist is piling up with random names and im reporting every single one with verbal abuse. It has come to the point where as a guy who whispers me in a match is instantly blocked. The result of too much negativity by players.

well it could be changed to be like in wvw where u cant see enemy names…tho there r ways to find em out, but as u have to do some more clicks to u actually can verbalise ur rage many ppl just dont pm in wvw. u only get many complaits if u troll people with pu mes / ghost thief (gladly u can ‘select’ if enemy will get the chance to see u so u can prevent getting pmt by just not being visible) – tho the complaits/insults r mostly from same ppl who run aroung ganking 5 vs 1 so i cant take em serious.

but in the end where there is competiton there will be rage => insults, trolls and so on. and there r allways ways to find out the ingame name of the guy u want to rage on

Keep blocking trolls until you stop encountering verbal abuse. The PvP community is surprisingly small, and after a little bit of blocking, your games will be either silent or full of only pleasant conversations.

It would be neat if Anet implemented a similar thing to reddit where players that were reported for abuse an X number of times got shadow muted temporarily (and permanently if it’s repeated too many times). They could scream all then wanted and no one would hear them (except maybe other trolls?)

It’s because Anet has decided to allow the toxicity of full premades vs full randoms. Creates frustration and a toxic community.

No. It’s just the nature of PvP. PvPers across most games are bigger jerks than PvEers. Look at any game and this is true: WoW, SWTOR, Wildstar (particularly), Elite: Dangerous… anywhere there is PvP, the PvP crowd will almost certainly be PITAs.

If you are going to PvP, here or anywhere, you must have a thick skin. So what if someone calls you a “noob”? So what if they teabag your corpse repeatedly after a kill?

For Chrissakes, it’s a video game. It’s not like words are gonna hurt you. Or even having your character teabagged. Try not to be so offended, and I bet you have a better time.

Or don’t. Whatever. What do I look like, your parole officer? -Sid

What IS verbal abuse, anyway? Last I checked, these words could not leap off the screen and beat a muthakitten down.

I don’t think it takes two for verbal abuse to occur as a result – just one incredibly thin-skinned individual who takes offense to words being written/spoken. And we all know how much humans love to be offended. XD

Yes, it’s very negative. There is little or no respect for one’s opponents and sometimes no respect for one’s own teammates. Just look at some of the replies on this thread.

It won’t get better, this is just the nature of MMO games I think. It’s why MMO gamers have the reputation in popular culture that they do. It does tend to be much worse in PvP games modes than in PvE.

As someone else suggested, all that blocking of individual players pays off in the long run. You will eventually see the amount of negative comments reduced. Also, turn off everything but “Team” chat before entering a match. Anything you need to hear in terms of tactics/cooperation you can hear in Team chat.

You also have to decide why you’re playing sPvP, and if it’s worth all the negativity and balance issues. I spend 95% of my time in WvW and general PvE, because that’s where I have the most fun and I feel like I’m actually part of a decent community. I play sPvP because it makes me a better fighter in WvW and PvE. I do not play sPvP because it is fun; it really isn’t. It’s like getting exercise; sometimes you have to force yourself to do it, but it’s good for you. It will make you a better fighter overall.

I have a sword, a dagger, and an estimated life span of 2.47 seconds.

This. The hostility of the current spvp system to solo players is a HUGE problem. Many games deal with the rage associated with losing in pvp. It’s a competitive area, after all. But the toxicity in GW2 is more than competition; its intense frustration with what feels like injustice: you are a solo player with the odds clearly stacked against you. Hell, I’ve faced top pvp champions in a kittening PUG. If that doesn’t create saltiness, idk what does.

Well in pvp everyone thinks they are better than you or at least try to be better than you. There will bound to be a lot of negativity. Many people play pvp to boost their ego/feel good at something, if they can’t do that obviously they would get upset lol. It’s just human nature.

This is just part of competitive pvp in any game. Pick a MMO with pvp and you’ll be sure to find some trash talk. Got to find a way to deal with it personally.

In my experience this game isn’t as bad as most of the other games I’ve played. (console PvP anyone?) That said I’m fairly new here and only ever queue unranked and I would imagine that ranked is probably worse.

However I have noticed that when I do encounter toxicity here, it’s usually extremely bad and extremely concentrated.
I had a match yesterday where in the match prestart two players on my team decided I must be the worst scrub ever because I was running sword/shield on my bunker guardian instead of the Metabattle standard, and because my gear “looked like a something a s****er wears.” They then proceeded to give me crap the entire match, and then when we won decided I got carried hard because they managed to get more points than my bunker did.
Granted they may not have realized I was a bunker since I might have accidentally forgotten to rez/buff/peel for them during the match.

Outside of that regrettable match, I haven’t seen much toxicity at all other than a few people getting salty in /say over getting +1’ed.

Sanity is for the weak minded.

It’s been bad the past week or so for me. People get whiny and then when someone calls them out on it they afk the match to throw it. And Anet seems to do nothing about it. I’m getting to the point of quitting pvp for at least a while because of it.

Block, ignore, move on.

And in my opinion the pve crowd can be even more elitist/toxic than the pvp crowd – unless playing something like condi mesmer or similar things that people love to hate – then the amount of bullkitten you receive increases exponentially.

Negativity is kind of a paradox. By speaking about negativity, a person is often also being negative themselves and helping perpetuate the very social norm they’re trying to help get rid of. Even most problem solving strategies involve first identifying a problem which comes with a certain degree of language that can be interpreted as negativity in itself. It’s cruel how life must be so complicated when we want to stubbornly view it so simply. You all have been philosophized. You’re welcome. Now go work hard and be nice. We’ve got an entire culture to recreate!

It has to do with class balance. 1 year ago the game was more balanced than it ever was, and beside the turret engineer being slightly annoying the class balance was near perfect.

Now the huge power creep and condi buff with the more restrictive build variety makes people die in 1-2 seconds sometimes without being able to fight back, it makes for a negative atmosphere.

There is no guaranteed way to counter negativity. Anything you try may not work in the end. What you can try is being positive. If you felt it was a good game, tell them. If your teammates did well, tell them in team. Try and keep it fun and sometimes it spreads. This is a game after all. Ironic that people feel that their life is in danger and they must rage when their e-life is eliminated. Its competitive so you can expect some emotions but some people really do like to rage. Its easy and then its no longer their fault and people love to pass blame. There is a difference between bantering/ smacktalking and raging. The first set you can expect and need to deal with, the latter take action on and is uncalled for.

Other ways to counter is sometimes you have to turn off chat. What level depends on what’s going on. Turn of say, map and whisper. If’s it’s a mouth breather on your team block them or turn off your team. If possible go in with a group and have them on voice. sPvP can be fun, don’t let the ragers turn you away, its not worth your time. Good gaming to you!
