A Tax-Free Virtual World
No tax = inflation = 10s for a single cooper ore (increasing more every month).
Gold sinks are required to stop inflation.
Don’t confuse reality with a video game. Take political agendas elsewhere. If your guild has to expend money and resources for its members, then the funding needs to come from internal sources.
ie., if the commanders in your guild drop the majority of the siege during WvW guild raids, to simplify efforts, taxes are great proposal.
Since I dont PVE, I dont know how or if it makes any sense to use taxes. Like so many have already said- it could be an off/on option of guild, and if you didnt like it, you could find a new guild.
Repair taxes? Seriously my repairman doesn’t take taxes from me, he repairs something I pay him… What you describe are just paying people for services.
But I think it would be funny if there were taxes in the game. At the end of each month, the game would just delete 10% of the gold you earnt the month, and if you earnt really much the tax can increase to 50% of the gold you earnt.
(I live in Germany the maximum tax rate is really about 50% in our country.)
And all this happens so that the children at the orphanage can get their lunch. This is how taxing works.
Why do we actually need to pay taxes in the game?
…
And don’t give me the reason of “game economy” because i don’t bite on that.
Let me explain in simple terms how in game economies work.
A good character/player at or near the level cap can generate about one gold per hour.
Now what are they going to spend that on? Not much.
Crafting doesn’t cost that much and doesn’t return the type of items someone at the level cap wants anyway.
Vendors? What vendor has anything someone at the level cap wants?
The TP? With no listing fee all of that goes to another player. It stays in the game.
As pre WWII Germany learned the hard way, the solution to inflation is not to print more money. Supply and demand are very real, very valid market forces. If you have an unlimited supply of money (i.e. generating 1g per hour just as you play) something MUST be done to remove this money from circulation (i.e. the game) or the net value of each piece of currency becomes less and less.
None of this has a single thing to do with taxation, it’s a long standing reality of game economics.
Now do I think that ANet has gone a bit overboard with the gold sinks (that’s what all the costs are called)? Yes, I think they could tone them down a bit.
But your rant against taxation has nothing to do with this little corner of virtual space.
IMO, paying for repair is fine. But those way point fees are much too high IMO. Those add up, at least at lower levels and especially if there are no alternatives to fast travelling (e.g., mounts, which I don’t want to see in GW2). And if you die in a dungeon, you pay to repair, you pay to just respawn at a waypoint, and you have a debuff. That is a little harsh it seems to me.
And by the way,“earnt” is not a word in the English language.
My idea of a free tax game world:
1) monsters drop only what you need: armor, weapons, materials. (“need” means here things you can actually use, not junk, trophy, salvage which implies you need to sell them)
2) no Trade Post but Donation Post where players can put anything they don’t need( weapons, armors, materials that are other lvls than what they need
3) no “Sell junk” or “Sell” button, but “Donate all” or “Donate”
4) instead of asking gold, karma, skill points for buying elite armors etc, why not make them lvl req. There is no difference in farming events for getting 65k karma or15k gold or 170 ectos than getting to lvl 5000 requirement for a specific armor
and so on…

Where there are no references to money, there is no inflation.
I only vote for removing the waypoint tax because all it really does it make the peopel who want to break the economy grind orr while it also makes other players who want to experience the game. . . Also grind orr since it’s too expensive to leave and come back.
Where there are no references to money, there is no inflation.
Get out of here socialist!
I’d say only tax cross zone WP travel so it would all be set up like cities. This way your death toll would be much less horrid.
Get out of here socialist!
Why not YOU get out of here, Mr. Corporatist ?
“I’d say only tax cross zone WP travel so it would all be set up like cities. This way your death toll would be much less horrid.”
So instead of just zoning from orr to frostgorge I’d just have to zone to malchor’s, straits, mount mal, etc (or do the same using LA→hoelbrak→zonezonezone)?
Just make them 100% free.
Either take your time running through loading screen after loading screen, or pay 2s, i think thats pretty fair imo.
