Okay so yesterday my girlfriend was playing on her character and she needed some help doing a skill point so she asked in map chat for help. Normally when you ask in map chat for help you get good responses, this time however someone said “I’ll help you if you cam nude for me” I have played many MMORPG’s and so I reported him for being offensive or whatever and then 2 others started saying the same thing and one of them explained that they can’t get in any trouble for saying such things and then referred me to a case that I can’t remember the name. I know a lot of people that let their wives and children play this game. There should be maturity to a point. Sexual Harassment should not be tolerated. I would appreciate if a dev could explain why that kind of behavior isn’t punished and if it is how it works. Thank you for your time.
My advice is to laugh it off. Yes report cos its not cool at all. But dont let it get to you. You will always find dregs in any community, and lets face it only women these clowns will ever see is via a web cam anyways.

If she was underage (probably not the case with his gf), this would even be child molestation, at least in Germany. But it doesn’t have to be a crime to be punished, ANet makes the rules of conduct and that is a clear violation of these terms. So it absolutely is a reason for a permanent ban.

It depends more on the company, I think. Some take it more seriously than others, as they can’t afford the fallout. However, even if it was only a write-up, there would be some action against the offender other than merely a verbal warning.
Edit: And, even then, it’s still on the victim if they want to take it further than what the company did.

You are absolutely right, it’s a game. However, the chat is not divorced from real life, and we can immediately see that it’s not RP. You are also right in saying that ANet’s opinion is the only one that matters in this situation, as they are the judge, jury, and executioner.
That doesn’t change the fact of what has happened, though, and it doesn’t call for you to similarly be so rude.

I don’t want this to go too far, but both of this is just plain wrong. Check §§ 12 Abs. 3, 7 Abs. 1 Satz 1 AGG as well as §§ 176, 183 StGB and the respective comments and opinions of the court. Other laws are also relevant.

I was always of the opinion that those trying to defend such behaviors, or just say “suck it up”, are those who commit such offenses.
Such behavior is not tolerable and should be very harshly punished, at least 1 week ban in my opinion. People who don’t respect others should get the message that this will not be tolerated in this game. That’s how you built a good community.

At an IT firm that specialised in tax returns and tax law. You get a rebuke if someone complains about you saying things like that, but you won’t get fired unless you actually want to insult someone.
At the end of the day, we are all grown ups and even if someone makes a really bad joke or even worse we can all deal with that. If there are complains they will be adressed, but, if you do a good job, you won’t get fired just because a joke went south.
And, as a side note, I don’t want to life in a world where you can get punished or sued for everything. A few of my friends, which live in the USA, told me once that that’s kinda the american way of life, and if that’s really the case, I’m very happy to live in Bavaria.

The problem here, Nachtnebel, is that you seem to be under the misconception that it will almost always be a joke, and that’s not the case. Sure, some will claim after the fact that it was “a joke gone wrong”, but… no, that’s not always the case. And it should never be treated as a joke unless you’re amongst friends who know it and are okay with it.

Well, the AGG (law about equality) provided may force the employer to investigate, but they don’t force him to do anything (at least not in the OPs case). AGG protects you against discrimination but a bad joke about “caming nude” is not necessarily discriminatory, also, in the given case, it could be an insult but this would never lead to a sexual harassment lawsuit unless it happens all the time.

This is definitvely off topic but I never had any problems due to some bad jokes here in Bavaria, once I got slapped in the face by a female coworker but that was okay since I really had overplayed it at the Christmas staff party.
At the end of the day, it all comes down how we tread each other and how we behave. I e.g. have a female boss that sometimes shows “a little too much” décolleté – you can almost see her belly while talking to her – and, at least in my book, that’s quasi an invitation to crack some jokes and neither her cloths nor our jokes are sexual harassment.
