I really want to like this MMO. I really do. But I’m having troubles doing so, and have stopped playing a while back after my Necro hit 80. Here’s an insight as to why I’ve stopped playing. Maybe if some of these points are changed I’ll come back. I hope they do, as this MMO definitely has promise. Please note, these are my opinions, and I am not “attacking” this game at all. I’ve played several MMOs as well, all the way back to BC in WoW, Everquest 2, Rift, etc.

1. Leveling is way too fast, even for average players. I got to 80 so quickly I was surprised. I suggest a little bit lower exp on doing the events – don’t want to end the fun too quickly.

2. After leveling to 80, I finally made it to the last personal story quest. So at this point I realize I need a group, and start looking for one. One problem, quest is bugged, no one is doing it. So stuck there, need to find something else to do. Bugs can make for a somber day. Game breaking bugs at release are a no-no. If someone can’t finish something, they’ll move to another game. Oh yeah, repawn rates in areas of Orr (Cursed Shore) are ridiculous (have they been fixed yet? I haven’t played in a bit).

3. Earning loot/gear? This is a big annoyance to me, and a large reason why I stopped playing. Ran several group events, defeated several bosses, etc. The loot drop rate was terrible. Nothing for my efforts. Oh, in one instance, at level 20, I got a 50 green. Rather odd. It seems good gear is only obtained through crafting, the trading post, or grinding out dungeons. Whatever happened to earning your gear through battle? I want to earn my gear, not buy it. So I end up grinding a bit for gold and get some exotic gear. Didn’t take very long to do so, and well, boring. Since I didn’t have to fight or battle for it, where’s the adventure? Don’t have any incentive, especially if I have to buy/craft it instead of fight for it. Whatever happened to boss drops?

4. Cash shop. I know what you’re thinking. No I’m not against it, but why isn’t there anything cool to buy in it? No cool costumes, skins, etc. Need to look at Aion, Perfect World, Vindictus, Sword 2. I know, they aren’t perfect either by any means, but at least they have cool looking stuff to throw my money at. It seems in GW2, it’s mostly about getting gold/gems in the end, and having nothing to show for your money spent. This is due to the fact that drop rates are horrible for gear, and the focus is more on buying your gear, repair fees, and transportation fees, etc. I’m not saying put gear with stats in there (you should earn that stuff IMO), I’m just saying some awesome town clothes and novelty stuff would be nice.

Again, this is my opinion, and I hope someday I’ll be back. I always check on things, so if I see some changes being made with drop rates, etc. maybe I’ll come back. I hope someday I do. If there were sweet boss drops, I’d be back in a heartbeat.

Please don’t mention Perfect World, that is the worse pay to win example you can bring up. I agree with the costumes, I like them, but there’s no enough costumes, it would be awesome to be able to fight with our costumes on.

1. GW2 is not about leveling, as in GW1, leveling is just there “to feel” progress, it is easy because it is meant to be easy, GW2’s main thing is PVP and WvW no doubt.

2. I leveled to 80 without doing my storyline, it is completly optional, if you complete Zhaitan’s you will unlock the explorable mode, but the reward itself from the dungeon is not that awesome. I believe 26 silver and a totem so you can exchange it for a fort trinity weapon – which skins are poor.

3. You get the gear in different ways, the gear you need for PVE is the blues, greens, yellows you get from drops, and that’s pretty much usefull, however if you want to get exotic or ascended or cool skins, then yes, you need to craft or be lucky and get exotics with drops. Note that dungeons (bosses) do give you gear, the “tokens” each dungeon/route gives, you can exchange them for the gear from that dungeon the one you want and not a random one. Better research about this before saying bosses are useless lol.

4. We need more cool looking skins, and costumes, agreed. Not temporal ones, but fixed ones. One thing I would love to see is to be able to fight with our costumes on x3 which I don’t see happening u.u

I respect your opinion but I do think you need to research more about these topics (1-3) before posting something of this nature.

If it’s not about leveling then why have levels at all? In fact, the areas and difficulty is still based on your level – a level 2 will not survive very long in Orr. I realize though leveling is not the main focus.

I know I don’t have to finish the storyline – but I want to. Why wouldn’t you?

I know there are tokens, I’m talking about bosses dropping gear in addition to tokens. Grinding for tokens can be tedious if you have no other “middle” rewards to keep you going along the way. Make it “fun”, not a “job”.

I know about the points you made, and know the facts about the game. That doesn’t seem to help my opinion though. Please understand, I’m not ranting, and not hating on the game. It’s just my opinion.

I did finish the storyline on my first character, just to know what it’s about, I might finish it later on my 2nd and 3rd but it’s not my priority, probably just for the skins of vigil, whispers, etc.

As said, levels are there just to feel progress, there are areas with different difficulty because you cannot stay in one same area in the story or quests (hearts) you’d remain in hoelbrak, citadel, rata sum, etc from 1-80 o.o; in fact in GW1 it was up to level 20 if I recall correctly, and yet it was a freaking awesome game.

ArenaNet intended tokens to be the reward in order to get whatever you want and not to make a treadmill like in fractals, where you have to do the dungeon over and over and over and over and with some luck you will get the item you want on your 50 run (at fractal level 10+). That’s what GW2 was trying to avoid but guess they forgot and this is why people were complaining about fractals in the forums, not being the same as the other dungeons.

I ain’t saying you are ranting or hating, I am just trying to clarify some points you did there.

They weren’t using PWI as a pay to win example; they were using the variety of things that can be purchased from the cash shop to entice players to buy things from it. As it stands now, aside from the skins, everything that’s in the GW2 ‘cash shop’ can be obtained in game through various means; there is nothing currently in the shop that is all that enticing.

What did I say? – I agree with the costumes – o.O I know how PWI is because I played it for 4 years, I know they have a lot of costumes and that’s what I pointed out. I just don’t want ANet to start selling gear (comment as a reminder only) – that’s all.

I’ve played PWI for just as long!

And I wasn’t discounting what you had said, my response was a mere generalization. I do agree though, I’d rather not see gear being sold in the cash shop…
