True Autoloot - Looting is a chore!
GW2 uses the easiest looting method I have experienced. Just tap F when passing over mobs…easy pesy.
You don’t want to make everything super easy. I remember when Vanilla WoW was very fun, but many of the old mechanics would be frowned upon nowadays. Make things too easy, sooner or later everyone will just stand around in Stormwind…

There is an Auto-Loot system in options and items do stay on the corpse for a moderate amount of time if your bags are full. It’s not hard to press “F” to loot a corpse, don’t be lazy.
Every thread on this forum does not need to be about WoW. Is it at all reasonable to assume that an auto-loot feature like I describe would make this game into WoW? How does an auto-loot feature cause people to stand in a capital city?
Since you want to compare, in WoW there is plenty of time to walk up to a corpse and loot it. There are also far less corpse to loot in most situations. GW2 is a different game than WoW.
A slippery slope argument does not apply here. I seriously doubt looting is meant to be part of the challenge of the game. Focusing the gameplay on combat, instead of walking up to corpses and pressing f, will only benefit the enjoyment of the game.
I agree its a pain to loot when doing events or WvW.
The reason is that u get maybe 10 mobs to loot and at the same time u got 10 more to kill and so on.
Maybe there could be a function that makes you aoe-loot?

It’s not hard?
How many times did my character stop to start reviving an NPC while I was surrounded by 10 Risen in Orr? I just kept spamming F to get the loot and run away. Do I need to mention it takes a few seconds for the character to cancel reviving?
How many times do I get dialogue popups during escorts when I try to loot, obscuring vision and hindering combat?
How many times does my character start to mine a node next to me, when I only tried to loot, and got clobbered by a mob or five?
How many lootbags did I loose in WvW during chases and escapes, fighting on the move?
Right now the F key has to go, needs to be split into Talk, Collect, Interact buttons. Autoloot needs to be implemented for WvW. Pressing Collect should collect all items in the area.
I think the people who say “it’s not hard” or “it’s not needed” have never been to orr or been in wvwvw. Any ranged player in Orr often has to choose between killing the next wave of Risen or dodging into the next wave and picking up loot. Either way they are missing out either on the action or on loot.
I said the simplest solution is autoloot, they could make a more complicated solution where a chest or something saves all loot for you until the end of an event, or we hire a dog or something to bring us our loot— but by far the easiest way would be to just a true autoloot option in the menu.

The real issue with looking is that the F-key does more than just loot, and if given the option to loot or converse/revive/pick up random stuff/etc. the F-key will always do everything except looting.
So either proximity looting (stuff gets looted by just being near it) or give the option to bind a button specifically for looting.
All you have to do is press f it’s not a chore. There is enough time for you to loot the corpses. Wasselin I have been to both wvwvw and Orr and I still say that looting is nowhere near a chore. CureForLiving you clearly haven’t played GW2 lately as they updated it so looting isn’t a problem. Arenanet should not waste on their time “on a true autoloot” just because of a few lazy players.
At least they could add a system that automatically puts badges in your inventory so you don’t have to get paranoid about missing badges
Gw2 is caek. Go bot in Orr. Geez.

The problem here is that the NPCs in the DE, any harvestable mats, players or NPCs to rez, and 10,001 other things all use the same “action key” as looting.
Oh and for the record, SWTOR looting was easier. You turn on AoE looting, hit your loot button once and everything in range gets looted with one keystroke.
But yeah, either map a different key to looting than the same one used for everything else, or just give me the loot automatically when something drops and I’m in range.
It’s annoying when i hit F to loot and instead it activates some npc dialog or something, so yes, autoloot by all means. perhaps if it activates within a small radius only, so you actually have to walk up to it to pick stuff up.

From what I remember they actually are working on that. I hope they extend that system from wvwvw to pve also.

I really liked that SWTOR had auto area loot. It was so nice to be able to click one dead mob in the pile and get the loot from all nearby mobs. I would love to see maybe a 900 range radius of auto area loot put into GW2.
This was really a problem if your character loved being ranged.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant

would be a very nice option to have.
Thanks Wasselin for posting this topic before I did!
True auto-loot would be greatly welcome in that it would keep the pace of the game quick. God of War and the Ratchet and Clank series do an excellent job of providing auto-loot that give plenty of visual feedback and doesn’t obstruct the flow of action at any point during play. The question is not whether or not hitting the ‘F’ key is easy or not. The question is “have you ever lost loot while you were busy fighting because the battle took longer than the loot availability timer allowance?” If you’ve been playing well, the answer to that question is most likely YES. If you’ve been playing in the middle of a zerg anywhere in the game the answer is definitely YES.
Obviously if loot is the reward for killing, it should not arbitrarily be taken away simply because the player failed to pick it up. If your boss were to keep your pay because you didn’t walk into his office and take it from his hand within a day of a pay cycle you would feel cheated. Every time I miss chest or mob loot because I’m busy killing stragglers and resurrecting fallen allies I feel like my boss just kept my pay, which I earned.
I challenge anyone to find an example of a AAA quality action game that takes rewards away from players after a time limit rather than simply giving players everything they’ve earned instantly.
As it stands, the difference between the auto-loot function being on or not is nominal at best. It also doesn’t address those instances when the sparkly loot indicator is obscured by large creature models because it does not scale to the model size.
The argument that other fantasy MMO’s don’t do it is as viable as saying that we shouldn’t aspire to improve the RPG model because we’ve never done it before. That kind of stagnating thought makes dull things more dull. Guild Wars 2 should aspire to make their action RPG use ACTIVE play systems. True auto-loot is the least of these active systems that should be standard.
Well said, Fang!
