I was thinking of an idea for magic find. Personally I see a lot of people who hate it all together. I personally do not hate it all together, but I do think that there is one major issue that causes the outrage.

The main way is that people have no way to tell who is running magic find unless they are running sigil of luck. One thing that I think would be a good idea would be to somehow make magic find work more like a buff where you can see in some sort of status how much magic find someone is running.

Granted this would mean a lot of people running magic find gear may well have trouble finding parties, but it would also help put magic find in a place where it belongs. You are intentionally giving something up to gain a higher chance of getting a good drop in what you are doing.

Personally I will tend to run some MF on my accessories (all exotic), and as I play a support thief it fits with my build pretty well. I also run full exotic gear non MF for my armor. On my mesmer I wouldn’t dream of putting MF on as I run full zerkers exotic everything.

I do think there are builds that MF to an extent is OK but if it were visible it would make the trade-off more fair. Might even have groups out there that are “MF only” Where they may take a little longer to plow through the dungeon but have chance at greater loot.

Personally I usually run with my guild members and friends and my role is support and venom sharing. When I do my accessories are MF. We are coordinated and efficient and we plow through the dungeons we do. If I’m in a pug, however, I will take the mesmer and run my full zerker’s mesmer because it’s courteous.

So what do people think about displaying the mf% a character is running visably?

Like any other stat, it might be best to keep it private, however like all other stats I would really appreciate it if they would include it in our character sheet together with all other stat breakdowns. I mean, they do still have one free slot available at the bottom…

I also agree on the character sheet. I would also like to know more from the Devs on how the MF increases your chance on getting loot. I don’t think there has been enough info on this to see if it is indeed worth running with it. Please give us percentages or how it works.

I could understand privacy if it worked like other stats, but it does not.

Here’s how MF works. Lets start by explaining how loot tables are determined, the game first rolls on the highest/best items if they will drop, so first it rolls for exotics (which are smaller chances), if it fails it moves to rare items, when that fails it then moves to masterwork etc etc you get the idea. Each of these loottables have their own items with their own drop percentages. If an item has a drop chance of 0.1%, and your magic find stat is +100%, then instead of that 0.1% that item now has a 0.2% essentially doubling it, and if you have +200% MF it will tripple. However some items have really small drop rates, like for example 0.01% will become 0.02% with +100% MF, so really in this case it doesn’t really do you any good because its still not noticeable at all.

People did some experiments, and indeed it showed an increase in material drops, I don’t know where I read this statistics as it was a while ago, but basically in exactly 50 kills with +0% MF 5 vials of weak blood was dropped. Increasing it to +50% MF showed that another 50 kills of the same mob would drop an average of 11 weak bloods, increasing it further to lets say +100% MF revealed that 15ish weak blood were dropped from another 50 kills. So statistically it does show some level of effectiveness.

MF causes issues with PUGs in dungeon groups because of giving up the extra stat to run MF thereby making runs take longer so less GPH and those running MF getting better loot while the rest of the party carries them through the dungeon. What one wears in PvE while farming karka is one’s own business. When someone is running it in a dungeon it would be nice to see it so you can make a determination. You could tell if someone’s MF comes from consumables or if they are running a full set of mf gear… that is if magic find were visible.
