So a couple days prior to the event starting an Anet member told us that Lionguard Lyns would be available throughout the wintersday event. Was this a flat out lie or will Lyns finish restocking her goods before the event is over? Can we get an official response to this please as many had stockpiled commendations that currently have no use.

“Commendation vendor Lionguard Lyns is restocking her goods and is not accepting commendations at this time. She will begin accepting commendations again soon.”

That’s from the patch notes. At no point does it say she will be back during the Wintersday event, it just says “soon”.

She’s busy being the announcer inside Tixx’s dungeon.

This really would be nice to know. I’m one of those with a few thousand commendations kicking around.

I admit it’s kind of my fault for not reading that part of the patch notes but still it’s annoying to be able to create 2,000 items with no use.

I just hope she actually has something that is worth a damn when she finishes “restocking” because if she comes back with the same stuff minus keys, for example, then no one in their right mind needs 2,000 commendations which makes the 80 trinket recipe kind of useless.

The OP was referring to a forum post by a Dev PRIOR to the patch that said she would be available during Wintersday.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in using that link as a defense since the response is, unfortunately, tied to a very specific question. That question being:

“Will the care package and the Captain’s council commendations stay ingame after the Wintersday patch or will these be removed?”

And while it mentions the commendations and the care package wrappings (which allow you to create commendations through the Mystic Forge), it says nothing about the stock of rewards that can be purchased with commendations. All we know about that part is that Lyns will be accepting the commendations as currency again “soon”.

That’s just dirty. Why would anyone even want to know if the commendations themselves would want to be in the game with no use?

They will be used as currency again as soon as she’s restocked (probably with a different selection of items). In the meantime people are free to continue converting unwanted items into commendations.

Watch it be the only way to get certain pieces of Ascended gear.

It’s not closing down permanently. Those commendations are not going to go to waste, she will be back “soon”. What does it matter if she’s not available during Wintersday? Was there something you desperately need during the event?

It really would be nice to know what is going on with this. It’s kind of disappointing since I’m sure when the question was originally asked about if Lyns would be around people were trying to establish whether there would be a BLKey supply available or not. The answer was one of those lovely ‘politician answers’ that’s designed to make you think what you wanted to hear was said but when the opposite happens you realize you weren’t lied to (not really) and read something that wasn’t there.

I’m a little sad I have to hold on to my commendations for so long, but I’m happy to know I will at least be able to use them eventually.

Wow, that long? I have a bunch of commendations, and not in the chest form either, so my inventory slots are running dangerously low.

I’m guessing they’re probably going to wait until they’ve made sufficient money from people buying keys to try out the updated black lion chests. It also makes sense that we can’t spend commendations on keys in and shortly after Wintersday as we can currently get commendations for very cheap. Now I just need to decide whether it’s worth the risk and investment to stock up on commendations now with the hope of getting cheap black lion keys later! If they removed black lion keys from Lyns I would be a very sad panda.

This is very very true. I’m very curious what she’s going to have in stock when she gets back though.

I’m hopeful for keys but if not keys it seems like she must have something that is desirable in mass quantities. Unless they change the recipes for getting 2,000 commendations the only reason anyone ever did that more than once was keys so without something like that commendations would just be way too easy to get and thus essentially worthless.

Of course I also have 720 crates (36,000 commendations) so I’ll feel a little dumb if there isn’t such a thing. Then that would be my fault entirely and not really Anets since I made the mistake of making them after Lyns was disabled but before I knew it was the case (missed that patch note).

What day does wintersday end again?

At least we have confirmation that she’ll be back before it ends, so we can kinda estimate when :P

Devs will never admit, but they don’t want us to get free Black Lion Keys because BL Chests are dropping some wintersday goodies now. It would be like giving us free wintersday chests. So they will bring this NPC back right after wintersday period

Kinda a shame if that’s the case because anet would need to consider their massive inflation before reintroducing Lyns… which would slow things down.

The Snowflake jewelry. Before they fixed it it cost ~60-70 silver to make an exotic earring (1 ecto, 12 ori ore, 1 snowflake), the crahed price of ectos helped a lot here. So for around 1.8 to 2 gold you could get 2,000 commendations. At normal exotic trinket prices it’ more like 6 gold or 2,000 commendations. Sofor 36,000 I spent ~36 gold instead of 108+ gold like it would cost with normal priced exotic trinkets.

I’m taking a big gamble that I’ll ever have use for that many commendations but I decided to risk it. The opportunity to get commendations for rougly 10 copper each has passed already and was only realy available to people who had donatio packaging from before Wintersday started (I actually made a mistake and bought way to many a while ag). It’s back up to the prices from before wintersday whenver Lyns comes back though.

Feels pretty good. You people are simply assuming the worst prior to any confirmation of her getting rid of the Black Lion Keys. You really should just settle down.

But than, whiners are gonna whine. It was the same, and probably still is, over on the WoW Achievement Sub-Forums. I swear, every holiday those forums exploded with whiners and haters looking to vent on how they “can’t do this” or “can’t do that” or how “that’s unfair”. Really, I sometimes wonder if the helpfulness of Holiday sub-forums outweighs the massive level of whine kitten they generate.

Now do I think that everything about the events has been done right, or handled properly? No, but my life doesn’t end simply because an event in a game didn’t go the way I wanted, and so I see no reason to kitten and moan about it everyday.

Ah yes. Because the dye changes during beta that made it so you can actually get more than one dye every 24 hours was clearly aimed at getting more money out of people.

And those new collectible tabs that suddenly freed up dozens of bank slots for people are obviously intended to make people use more gems on storage. The aledged dungeon token collectibles tab is obiously aimed at that too,

Speaking of dungeon tokens, you remember when they made them account bound so you didn’t need a different stack of tears for very character. They obviously were trying to make bank space harder to come by there too.

Oh and how could I forget the 5 character slots. I mean come on, 5 obviously they want people to buy character slots only giving people exactly enough to have one of every race and 1 more than necessry to have all the crafts! Those money grubbers just can’t give us a break.

Anet’s track record as you see it, but not as a whole. You see only the bad and so you feel you are justified in your complaints, whereas someone like unspecified here shows there is also things that say otherwise.

I’m assuming the only thing that makes sense to assume, restricting the access of cheaper keys. Lyns was available at the very beginning of Wintersday, so she wasn’t disabled for technical reasons. If you deny this has anything to do with keys, I’m curious why you think she was disabled.

Its obvious why shes been disabled. There was no problem at all with her UNTIL the BL chests started to become popular with the new items because they were trash before and no one bought gems to buy keys. But now everyone wants keys at the chance of a high valued item, Lyns has been pulled and will definitely make a return WITHOUT keys for sale. rofl.

Well they will most likely change the contents of rewards
1. (probably no more bl keys, but instead maybe a mini pet set/salvage kit/or other things)
2. Have the same stuff, but costs A crapload more commendation per key (or change bl chest contents)
3. Change the captain commendation token to something else.

1. or 2. are most likely. Although it’s a bit annoying that I had 50k commendations ready to exchange the day it was declared it would be out of commission, I can understand why. Personally, I think giving us a day warning about it going rather than giving the misleading statement seemingly implying that exchanges would remain over Wintersday would have been the classy thing to do but I still understand.

I’m not whining or complaining about this because, frankly, this is a relatively small issue (even if it will possibly make me poor with no benefit ha – maybe I should have had more foresight). I do find it surprising that people are having a go at the skeptics. Fair enough that we have to wait and find out what’s really going on but it doesn’t take much to make an educated guess at what’s going to happen. Maybe these forums would have less people complaining about the “whiners” if they themselves had anything invested in the decisions that were taking place.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just thinking out loud.

Anyway, I’m just going to hide away my commendations in storage and keep checking for news. Apart from a couple of hiccups, Wintersday has been very enjoyable for me. Good job Anet, I’m sure you’re taking in to account what the community thinks and for that I’m sure events will keep getting better and better. Keep it up.

First. I was simply speculating. Second. I have no issues with what they’re doing. If people really want the keys and Anet wants to make you buy them then fine. You guys are paying for my game and helping the B2P model remain viable.

I agree she might not have keys when she re-opens. But I also think her inventory is going to drastically change. Otherwise they would of just taken keys off her and left everything else there.
I did the same as Unspecified. only instead I spent about 75g on 84 trinkets and got 1,120 crates (56,000 commendations), which should of got me 196 keys (not counting more keys from chests). Right now I’m wishing I’d kept the trinkets instead. I started buying them constantly when they were at 1.5g, then continued when they went down to 70s, then kept going when they went back up to 90s. probably about 90s on average. It was everything I had, even cashed in saved ectos and every mat. Then went to spend them and was taken aback by what I at first thought was a bug.

Well, as someone who had no idea about the travails of Lyns before hand.. I discovered after researching, on my own, about what these Commendations things in my inventory are. I looked at the Wiki and thought, “Wow, finally Anet gives us a realistic way to open the stacks of Black Lions chest that accumulate! How sweet of them!”

So, I do some experimenting and get together some coins. After a bit of hunting, I find Lyns, and… WTH?!

Anet, if you are going to disable the recipient of an item, you have to disable the giver too!

I don’t find it reasonable to expect that players should be learning about these things through the forums. Since when did playing video games become about spending your time reading pages of complaints in a forum? (Please don’t answer this, it’s rhetorical, I’ve been playing for 32 years). Unless you have the patch notes since released all memorized and/or refer to them every time to discover something new….don’t tell me I should.

Anet has a stellar track record. Account bound minis in RNG boxes. How ethical is that to force the collectors to gamble with real money? Someone mentioned the Korean origins on another forum and got hogtied as a racist, but they do have a point that culturally, gambling is more of an expectation than in North America. Look at NCSoft’s latest quarterly earnings report and you will see the US market is a pittance compared to Korea. Even Europe is better! So, as much as all of these (in my not so humble opinion -> SCAMS) turn me off playing the series I love most, I understand, as a software business owner myself, the desire to maximize the profit on the game.

I’ll bet 10 gold that there won’t be keys (at least, at 285 or less) when Lyns’ returns. If there are, I’ll be happy to pay up!

Actually, they trolled and said she’d be present for Wintersday, which she has been.
