I personally disagree with random chance mechanics
If I do all 5 Tixx dungeons I can get enough mats to make 2 Xmas Dolls. Which is cool, and how rewards should happen. There is not enough of this, and far too much RNG going on right now.
I just want to address this part for some reason. What was stated was that if you do all five days you can get enough materials to make two of the minipets, correct?
What wasn’t said:
Rewards for Toypocalypse.
Rewards for running the earlier events after the ship gets to L.A.
We also know you have the additional option of buying the minis from the gemstore (350 gems ea). Ventari and Creepy Doll are already listed there.
I think the whole minipet complaints are a wee bit premature.
Minipets I’m fine with. I’ll get a couple that I want from doing the Tixx dungeons.
I’m more talking about stuff like the weapon skins and the choir bell and stuff.
It’s great that they put cool stuff in the game, but if we want it we’re seemingly expected to drop lots of gold on TP, or grind grind grind until we beat the odds on the RNG, without ever knowing what those odds actually are.
I don’t actually care if I get a bell or not. I just want them to stop this cynical stuff that takes advantage of players with an addictive personality. There’s no sub fee, stop making us grind as if there was one.
(edited by Chamone.6890)
Most of the skins on the TP can be bought for the gold you would make in 20 to 30 minutes of farming Pentinent/Plinx/Tar Ele+Fish Oil event chains on Cursed Shores, stop being such a baby.
(edited by Zero Angel.9715)
Yeah, it’s my fault for wanting something interesting or rewarding out of the event, right?
I should just shut up and farm Orr & Fractals for gold like everyone else, and buy myself my own presents from the TP.
Yeah, I mean after all the events are so dreadful and boring that you might as well farm orr right? I mean what is the point of having a snowball fight or doing jumping puzzles or playing musical bells unless you make a profit amirite?
You can exchange Ugly Wool Socks/Hats/Sweaters for weapon skins…
That said, I kind of agree with you that RNG can be bad (like the guys that cant get rings even after doing like 20 dailies on FotM — thank Dwayna they fixed that by introducing pristine relics). I just think you’re overreacting a bit to this one. Just play to have fun, dude. Who cares about all this crap. When holidays are over then you can farm orr/dungeons or whatever you do to get gold and buy the things you want if you can’t get em during the holiday event.

You could invest a small portion of the time that you need to rant on the forums to take a look at the “socks and hats.. Again, RNG style.”… never wondered what these are for?
You could invest a small portion of the time that you need to rant on the forums to take a look at the “socks and hats.. Again, RNG style.”… never wondered what these are for?
You can turn them in for more giant presents to have another crack at the RNG.
Oh hi, we heard you liked RNG so we put RNG in your RNG so you can gamble while you gamble.
I don’t play fractals, but I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to be in a 5-man party doing your daily lvl 10 to try and get a ring, and everyone else in your party gets one but you don’t. They all move up to level 20 and you go back crying to LA.
Where’s the fun in that? If there’s a reward for doing something, either everyone should get it or nobody should.
When you did the clock tower jumping puzzle, you got a pair of exotic boots. No RNG, no BS, just a straight-up reward for doing something difficult. A good reward at that.
Everyone loved that. Do that. Don’t do RNG rewards. We hate those.
(edited by Chamone.6890)
RNG-ception.
Oh and they fixed the problems with RNG with the fractals. If you dont get a ring, you now get a special token. If you collect enough tokens you can use it to buy a ring of your choice.

Uhm yeah… and you can buy permanent weapon skins of your choice with it, which you have asked for. Twice.

Or you could save them up and by weapon skins directly ijs. No RNG involved there.
I honestly think people are overreacting to much. We can buy skins directly from trading post, and directly ingame.
We get 2 minipets if we play 5 tixx dungeons.
We get a jumping puzzle, a bell-choir and snowball pvp.
And for all those new events, we had to pay… nothing. Exactly. We got it all for free.
The mysteries dissapear and life stands explained.”

Indeed. I guess maybe they tried playing Fractals themselves and realised that doing dailies and getting nothing was no fun.
The fractals ring token shows they are slowly turning away from this idea of RNG and luck being the main way to get what you want. I hope this starts to extend out to other areas of the game as well. I’d love to see a way to get a Precursor other than throwing rares into the forge and crossing your fingers, or a 0.00001% drop chance in the world. Both are particularly extreme abuses of RNG to make something very rare.
Lets be optimistic, and say that Wintersday rewards must have been planned and developed before this re-thinking about tokens and collecting being preferable to pure RNG rolls and a lot of hope.
(edited by Chamone.6890)
Yeah some people are overreacting, although at this point it looks like the dungeon rewards don’t reset once Tixx gets to LA. The only thing I’m really irritated about is the festive minipets (different set than the Tixx ones). Those are RNG only, and you have to get lightening to strike 6 times to get all of them. And you can’t even sell extras that you don’t want.
The game isn’t free. We already paid $60. That’s 4 months worth of sub for a sub MMO right there, so by sub MMO logic Anet shouldn’t get any more until January. And most of the collectors have already paid multiple times in the gem store for minis, costumes, boosters, etc.
If they made the festive minipets unbound or confirmed they’d be back next year I’d be happier. Bound and RNG is too much.
(edited by Gilosean.3805)
Yeah, the pets need to be unbound, definitely.
in my opinion i think those sweaters and socks should come in greater armounts like 5/10
Personal Story, WvsW , Guild Missions, Living Story and so much more.
(We have Teamspeak and a forum ) join us!
I’d rather have the pets in a minipack like they did with the Halloween ones, or perhaps put the minis in the sock/sweater/hat NPC so we can buy them there. RNG for minis from a chest that costs real money is a bit too much for me. I’ve already spent plenty in the gemstore over the last few months the game as been out, it just feels like they’re trying to suck every cent out of the player for cool stuff.
I suggest they give me something and then I RNG the amount of money I’ll pay for that
RNG makes them CASH in the online store. The boxes are basically pixelated scratch-off lottery tickets. People get into the mindset that one more try will get them that item and they buy more. The same concept behind casinos and lottery tickets, etc. Offer a small chance for a “big win” and it entices people to spend more cash.
How many people have you seen playing games at a carnival to win some item and end up spending more on the game than they could’ve bought the item for? A lot. Since the game has no sub fees and no advertising, it runs off profits from the online store and RNG stuff is a lot of that profit which is why you see it tied to every event they have.
RNG stuff is a lot of that profit which is why you see it tied to every event they have.
I think its short-term profit at the expense of long term player loyalty. We won’t put up with RNG rewards forever.
no advertising
But to the topic, as someone with a soul CRUSHING history with luck in RNG, I am feeling just a wee bit used when ANet only puts the MOST asked for items as an super rare RNG item. (I understand it for the unlimited use consumables, but for the cosmetic scythe skin and the only non-corrupted quaggan minipet, there is no excuse, ESPECIALLY since it’s account bound..)
I have not purchased a single black lion key, nor any Gemstore chest from any event. And I never will.
Did I buy the Halloween minipet pack? Yep. You bet.
Did I buy the Halloween, Consortium, or now Winter chests! Nope. See above.
Would I have purchased several lost shores minipet packs to have some to trade in the Mystic forge for a more rare lost shores pet? Yep, you betcha.
Would I have purchased several Halloween weapon skins (permanent ones)? Yep, you betcha.
Would I have purchased several winters day festive minipet packs to get all of them plus the baby quaggan? Yep, you betcha.
So right now, Anet has already lost oh, say, at least 20-40 dollars in revenue that I would have gladly handed them. Do they really have enough “whales” who will buy lottery scratch-off tickets to make up for all the rational players like myself who see those scratch-off tickets as a total ripoff for zero value, and a waste of good money?
(edited by shaktiboi.5194)
The worst part is we are never informed of the odds/probabilities, and so we can’t make informed choices.
Be it trying to get a precursor from the forge, opening BLCs, Trick or Treat bags, or any number of other things Anet attempt to entice us towards, we are encouraged to have a go with no clue as the chance of success and no way to evaluate our outcomes (were we really unlucky after so many tries or are the odds really this poor etc).
This is a guaranteed recipe for leaving a bad taste in a significant number of players mouths.
Anet may well believe that with an uninformed player base they are likely to make more revenue through the gem store via their gambles, but I believe at best this would hold true for the short term only. Medium to long term, you cant have a successful business model that consistently leaves big chunks of your revenue earners feeling like dupes/mugs.
At least at the casino or lottery I can work out the odds if I want to. If and when I then decide to regret a decision I’ve made, I can hold myself responsible.
With GW2 the only thing we know is that we don’t know.
All these development hours being used to entice blind gambling could have been put to making the game fun, and no crossing your fingers and buying countless chests or throwing countless gold into the forge is never long term endgame fun.
(edited by Rez.8016)
Aww, poor baby. If you want a sure thing go farm orr and buy something from the TP.
I’d love to do this but all the Wintersday minis are account-bound.
I still love GW2 a lot. I have a lot of fun playing the actual content even though I sometimes feel bitter about not getting rewards very often, and it’s doubtless the best MMORPG out there; and I’ve got about 700 or so hours since early access (don’t know if that’s much, just know it means I clearly am enjoying the game). Hell, I’ve been playing since GW1 came out (even bought nearly everything in that store), and often support ANet like a blind fanboy.
That being said, I am with you on this 100%.
I feel like an old friend is acting totally out of character, doing things unnatural for her that I would not ever have imagined her doing. I feel like I don’t know this friend, and I wonder the rationality behind her decisions, yet she is unwilling to address the issue. Or maybe she just got money-hungry, and forgot the ideal she used to share of not forcing players into one way of playing the game or another, and found what works for her and doesn’t give a flying kitten what any of her friends think or how they feel about it so long as she’s bringing in the cash. Either way, I as a long supporter, the lack of reward in this game in the areas that I typically enjoy have definitely helped me to spend more time away from it.
I dislike gambling. It goes against my nature. And it upsets me greatly that the types of rewards that I like most are available almost purely by gambling. I’m not against RNG Chests, I’m sure many people like them, I just don’t believe anything should be available strictly by a RNG Chest but, rather, there should be greater content-based options… reward for challenge, reward for playing the game… to put it frankly, reward for actually doing stuff.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
The whole ‘account bound’ and ‘soulbound’ thing is kind of out of hand in GW2. There are entirely too many things that are account or soul bound that have no reason to be – siege plans in WvW, gathering tools, these new mini’s – I’ll even push it to the point where I include dungeon tokens in that. There’s really no reason for it beyond armor and weapons IMO.
Maybe if they killed such binds on minis, thus making them sellable, that would resolve a lot of this RNG BS we see going on – well, perhaps half of it. It would certain take away a lot of players incentive for complaining about RNG but, we’d still have to deal with aNet’s overuse of RNG.
Most of the skins on the TP can be bought for the gold you would make in 20 to 30 minutes of farming Pentinent/Plinx/Tar Ele+Fish Oil event chains on Cursed Shores, stop being such a baby.
Not all of us are max level though and still want to participate. Just because you rushed through the game doesn’t give you the right to be a jerk to people.
If you’re looking for a material rewards all the time you’re playing the game wrong.
You should think of them as a nice bonus, nothing more. Focus, as Voonith said above, on the actual content.
Skill doesn’t get them money, RNG boxes are where it’s at man gotta get dat monaaay. For every person who is fed up with that bullkitten and won’t spend a dime there’s another 10 who merrily throw their money into the vacuum and tell all their friends about how they got 2 minis for 50 bucks like it’s so awesome. /facepalm
RNG stuff is a lot of that profit which is why you see it tied to every event they have.
I think its short-term profit at the expense of long term player loyalty. We won’t put up with RNG rewards forever.
You might not, and I certainly will never buy those types of things, but there are tons of others out there across a multitude of different games that will. In fact the reason why all games with cash shops have these things is because people just keep on buying them. They prey on the fact that people are desperate to get a ‘winning’ box, and so unless everybody stops buying them, we will see these things around for ever.
Am I the only one here who thinks ANet has the right to make money off of content which they are constantly updating? GW2 isnt like most AAA games where you buy it once and you get what bought but not anything else. Or like most MMOs where you have to pay 15-25 dollars a MONTH just to play — at least ANet is constantly serving new content (which costs money to develop) and you guys are complaining that you cant get everything for free, like attempting to make money is some kind of underhanded trick they’re pulling. Umm NO. Dont be a tight wad you dont have to put any money into GW2 if you dont want to but dont go crying to the message boards if you get less trinkets than people who are.
ANet tells the odds, but not in percentages, they say like “common, uncommon and rare” chances.
I hate it too, but they do not lie to anyone.

Funny thing is: they could have made more money on the long term if they were less greedy with the gem store.
Everything is RNG because there’s people who are fine with that.
Unless you find a way to prevent people from throwing their money in something that is a waste in hopes of getting something, they’ll keep doing that, because it works for them.
All I can do myself is only buy the things sold in a way I like which currently it’s only bank and character slots.
I will not pay for a costume unless it’s unlocked like in GW1’s, I will not pay for a miniature unless I can choose which one I’m getting, and I will not pay for consumables at all, ever.
If I’m paying for bytes, I’ paying to keep them bytes. They are not food or any other expendable product, they are not hard to reproduce indefinitely once created, so when I pay for digital stuff, I only pay for the work done to make them, not to keep them coming, and that means paying ONCE per piece of content.
Yeah, it’s my fault for wanting something interesting or rewarding out of the event, right?
I should just shut up and farm Orr & Fractals for gold like everyone else, and buy myself my own presents from the TP.
Pretty much. It’s good that you, like everyone else, have your eye on something but that’s the way games work, especially MMOs. You don’t just get handed things when you get chests or boxes or w/e. It’s a random chance at getting better, worse, or exactly what you want and it’s part of the game.
I may as well sit here and complain about how I don’t get 3 ecto’s every time I salvage a rare. Damn them for making this game interesting and challenging.

So what you are saying is that random chance mechanics make the game hard? It isn’t having to do a certain set of skills in order or actually do content? Just the ability to buy “chests” then open them for a random chance item is interesting and challenging…. It seems I will have to change what I consider challenging to continue playing this game.

You do realize the only reason why most of the complaints are happening is because of how they sold the games message 4 years prior to its launch. I have been hearing about, “We reward for skill, not for grind/luck” since the mention of Guild Wars Utopia. Now that Guild Wars 2 is here they have done a complete 180 on their methodology of how to get rare items.
I am not saying Guild Wars 1 didn’t have RNG in the code. I am saying that for most rare items (mainly armor) there was 0 RNG attached. The major problem with Guild Wars 2 like I stated is that they pushed it as a skill based reward system and went half and half on launch (Half skill half luck).

Minis, rare dungeon weapon skins, ectos, obsidian shards, sapphires, rubies, other materials to make rare weapons, coffer of whispers, zaishen chest, dungeon chests, nine rings, voltaic spear, green weapons, dhumms scythe, lock picks, everlasting tonics, elite skill tomes, Chibi Gwen, Superior runes, salvaging superior runes, prophecies elite skill boss spawns, tapestry drops from challenges, Wintersday gifts, birthday gifts, Trick or treat bags, Air of Superiority, identifying weapon mods, salvaging weapon mods…
in short…some of the most desirable things in the history of GW, and some core progression were RNG with as low as a sub 0.1% chance. I’m not sure what game you were playing for seven years, but it wasn’t GW if the only RNG you came across was armor.

No, you said “most rare items”, which is false as you can see from my nifty list I will keep adding to as things come to mind. Then you said “mainly armor” as an aside (see that’s what parenthesis mean), which is also false, since you aren’t considering Ecto, Obsidian Shards, Rubies, Saphires, Jade, and Amber for the most rare sets. And all of which, in and of themselves, were super rare to annoyingly rare materials from random drops or salvages (at least Amber and Jade could be traded for faction, but if you didnt like to PvP…s.ol.) (that was another aside).
In other words, you were just wrong all around. Sorry to be the one to tell you.

Actually you’re partially wrong and proving your point with situation that weren’t absolutely similar te ones that create complaints in GW2.
For example Minis: 1 granted at each of your characters birthday. (Random? yes. Can go empty handed? No. Can be sold/buyd from other people? Yes!)
p.s. and no serious RNG from the store in GW1

I wasn’t replying to the situations people were complaining about in GW2. I was replying to Vanthian’s statement:
“I am not saying Guild Wars 1 didn’t have RNG in the code. I am saying that for most rare items (mainly armor) there was 0 RNG attached” (Emphasis mine)
Which was wildly incorrect. Being for or opposed to RNG in a game, as a mechanic is one thing, but just plain making things up when talking about a game’s predecessor and trying to apply that false information in order to make some point here is totally different.
So I was just setting that straight.

It is interesting that some of my friends are going nuts about trying to get the choir bell to the point of obsession and frustration and I know at least one person who just dumped a lot of real world $ into gems to buy the thing from trade
I think that stuff in the open world should be RNG based – that is life – BUT – I think Arenanet is losing a lot of microtransaction $ by overpricing special items, binding them characters not accounts and applying RNG to them. Right now GW2 gem based bonuses seem overpriced unless you are a level 80 “farmer”. We have 4 accounts in my household and although we have multiple alts we only have 1 level 80 so far. I know from direct experience that my family would be spending more money on GW2 if it was not for the randomness and price of the items on offer

Let me shed some light on my comment for you since you are having trouble understanding it. I will go step by step through what I said. Okay, here we go:
“I am not saying Guild Wars 1 didn’t have RNG in the code. "
First sentence, not widly incorrect at all. In fact starting with that statement it seems to be that there is RNG in the code which contradicts what I say in the latter by your understand (in which you didn’t even point out) but sadly it isn’t the case. if you read the second sentence together with the first….
“I am saying that for most rare items (mainly armor) *there was 0 RNG attached”
It seems that the most rare items there was no RNG attached, but wait… there is something in the middle there… oh here it is MAINLY ARMOR. It seems that for the most part Guild Wars 1 had a RNG just like every other guy except for when it comes to armor.
Now lets look at that last statement, recap: Guild Wars 1 had a RNG just like every other game except for when it comes to armor.
Indeed, Guild Wars 1 armor system was you get the mats and then buy the armor. There is no question as to whether or not you will get said armor after collecting the mats. There is no roll to obtain the armor form the vendor. You pay the vendor he gives you the armor.
Which brings me to the next point which comes back around to the topic.
Guild Wars 2 and Guild Wars 1 had very similar philosophy for armor. In which max armor should be easily obtainable for everyone. It started out great for Guild Wars 2 in my opinion. Running dungeons grants tokens in which you turn in for your armor. Which is really like Guild Wars 1: gather the mats———> get the armor
Guild Wars 2: gather the tokens —> get the armor
Each without RNG. You buy the armor; it is yours without a doubt.
Now all of that has changed with recent statements. People now know that the max is not currently available through such sure means. It fact, most of the pieces are not even available at all!
The back and ring pieces are granted in such a way now (rings were introduced with a PURE RNG fashion but that was corrected).
You get the items throw them in the mystic forge and tada you have your new infused yata yata.
The major problem with most rare items in guild wars 2 is that you have to go through RNG loops. Granted most of the named Exotics have recipes, which is nice, but some do not. Now there are always other methods to obtain them. Ignoring buying them or buying rares and exotics in general… I will explain what I mean by a rng loop.
For exsample: Kryta’s Embrace the exotic shield (the Tall Shield for Guild Wars 1)
It is a random shot in the dark when you throw in either 4 exotic shields into the forge or 4 rares. You have a small chance to get this in return. Whooo!!
But wait… where do you get the exotic shields and rare shields to being with? Through a RNG mob drop (much like mob drops in Guild Wars 1 for armor but I will explain why this RNG is much different than the aforementioned Guild Wars 1).
In Guild Wars 1 you got a mat you knew you could use that to create something else, no RNG. It was pure and simple. There was no question. You get it, you keep it.
In Guild Wars 2 you get a mat (which includes weapons, armors, rings, etc in guild wars 2 due to the mystic forge) it is not for sure what you will get every time unless you are following a specific format already laid out by previous players; which for some items do not exist. Yet throwing them in the forge still takes the mats and requires you to farm them again through RNG mob drops.
All of that being said… Do I mind RNG being in games? No. In fact I believe it is needed to create super rare items. What I do not agree with is putting RNG on everything. Guild Wars 2 is slowly slipping into a RNG only game. It started with the exotic weapons having no recipe (again some not all). It then spread to the ascended rings (which was fixed), but this can only lead to the question of…. what else will the RNG seep too?
