Stupid Fraps not working when you want to, I tried recording that whole battle at SF Bay when SF started to attack bay, that was pretty hectic fighting

Jeknar, where is the score update?

I’m in wvw and having fun. It was a neat little siege at Bay, I wasn’t quite understanding people meant the Bay being attacked = the wall/gate south of it. Then SF hit the Bay proper. I got to play with an arrow cart, then fireballs, then got offed.

We had burning oil set up in the place, but I am not quite able to figure out the point of those, unless you have a group of people kindly lined up right by the door.

In lieu of Jeknar, I shall instead provide the score update for the matchup that we all know will end the same bloody way. Accurate as of five minutes ago.

So far, Sorrow’s will gain 38 rating if they keep the gap between scores… While it’s not enough to beat HoD, which have a artificial 20 rating gain, it means that SF is at least working at full force and might aswell get out of the Glicko’s Pit of Despair.

And i’ll tell to ya, if they ever do this, you can call those guys heroes and give’em a medal, because HoD (or whatever server is the next one in the line) will be fated to never leave…

Am too tired to type much, but I had the best fight so far tonight. It was freaking AWESOME. We got sieged by a small group of SF, maybe 1.5 of them vs 1 of us? We’d already gotten some defenses up preemptively, and it turned into a proper siege. It went on for a nice long time, they even built a catapult to take us down!

I haven’t gotten to enjoy myself like this for a long time. I want to thank all of the SFers and all of the FCs that were there tonight, what a fun time! I love the fierce tough nailbitey battles.

This is not actually true. If HoD comes down and gives a good fight, IE: loses some, wins others, they will add good number of points to the T8 tier, which will bring all the Servers up in numbers. Thus if our fights are balanced, we all stand to gain ratings and HoD could potentially pull out faster by lifting the numbers of FC ans ET.

They however might really mesh well in T8, anyway, and we all get what we want, which is fun, balanced matches. If we get that, and we have fun against each other, who cares what Tier we are on.

The problem with T8 right now is how lop sided the match up is. If SF had not gotten a jump in numbers and remained at the force level they had when they arrived, then we might all be having fun at this point as opposed to dealing with the odd man out.

Can’t change that now. But HoD has been a 3rd place Server on T7 for longer then FC or ET have been 3rd place servers on T8, and the only reason they have not dropped to T7 a long time ago, is the due to the messed up numbers in T8 right now. So their is a good chance they will fit in well with us as opposed to spending the rest of their existence as last place in T7.

and while we’re on the subject of mesmers... another two... one from Fergy and one from SF, were just hassling my small group as we were trying to take camps and whatnot. maybe an hour or two ago. i want to give a shout out to both of them. i forget their tags, but one was dressed in red draconic? i think? both were very good.. and VERY persistent. was a good hard fight each time, and you both kept coming back for another round. kudos.

Never go off of mos.millennium’s reset day projections. They’re always skewed. That 38 rating increase projection dropped to a 9.7 rating increase projection overnight. My guess is that as the week goes on, that rating increase projection will likely disappear (and perhaps even go negative) despite our best efforts.

Forgive my pessimism…Glicko has given me very little reason to be optimistic. And this is all quite reminiscent of the 2/15-3/1 match-ups.

Servers don’t create rating out of nowhere. If a server gain rating, other is losing…

In the first matchup, if HoD drop with 900 rating points, it will be more likely that they will lose 200 right away unless they roflstomp T8. That will put all 3 servers on T8 at 700 rating, which is 300 behind the last one in T7 (that will be SF). There is a canyon (created by the past blowouts) between T7 and T8 and that’s why it’s so hard to get away.

This would not surprise me one bit. Especially given that during the first hour after reset, SF was showing a -240 rating projection when we were briefly in third place.

That’s my thought as well. Totally reasonable of Glicko, isn’t it? :p

The Glicko system has not yet brought its full brutality to bear since rebounding from Sorrow’s Furnace’s recent two weeks of rating drops, if there were any good chance for them to advance it would be this week before the system can make ridiculous improvement projections and start chopping up their ratings.

Unfortunately it would require ET and FC to stop maintaining an organized presence for the week to get their rating to 50+, something that probably won’t happen and since you’d probably be flamed on both servers for even suggesting forfeiting a week, I fear Sorrow’s Furnace will be stuck here yet another many weeks bouncing between painfully slowly making +5-10 gains at best before Glicko starts cutting down rating in every period between them maintaining positive rating.

In the best case scenario. it’ll probably be like this for SF every month repeating constantly until they FINALLY advance at some unpredictable point:

In the worst case scenario they could start going nowhere every month, with monthly rating trends like this:

As others have noted, its no longer Sorrow’s Furnace vs. ET/FC, it’s Sorrow’s Furnace vs. Glicko 2. This is the tier where Glicko 2 is at its strongest, so its tremendously difficult to overcome its predictions, but it is possible. There’s quite a lot at stake for all the servers at this point, with the March patch bringing in a whole lot more incentive to enter WvWvW (Progression, better battle quality with the removal of culling( if you have a system capable of handling it), etc. Depending on the timings and how the work out there could be a second wind in store for both ET and FC, and not a small thing like who comes in second place but something truly substantial in the numbers game. SF may grow as well, although I don’t know if it has as much room for improvement as these two servers. Furthermore, the longer SF gets stuck, the greater the risk that the dedicated WvWvW players get bored and no-showing/quitting/move on to some place where a little more challenge is offered, reducing the competency there.

The next month and a half could see some truly major shifts, and while this is an exciting time I truly hope that SF gets a shot at tier 7 before the March patch hits if its possible.

ET and FC have more than 100ppt… SF is slacking off…

Let’s face it, it will be hard for SF to go up the ratings if the same system persists. However, I didn’t see any decent proposals for improving the system. It is not the system’s fault that server transfers left FC and ET so underpopulated. In my eyes, it is working as intended. Besides, if you wish to blame someone maybe SF are to blame for dropping into T8 in the first place.

Maybe if the population of ET and FC continues to decline, the 2 servers may be merged to make a more cohesive force to fight SF and thus fix the Glicko situation.

They would need to merge 4 servers in order to keep the balance of things… Thus making somenthing like SF+ET+HoD+FC.

how would this fix it

first, as pointed out, merge 4 servers to preserve match pairing symmetry
second, what do you do about rating? where do you place the new server? how do you place it without messing up the balance much? what do you do to ensure you dont just have a repeat of the current t8 rating gap in a few months?
third, if you havent seen decent rework proposals then you seriously havent read much on the subject
fourth, it is partially the system’s fault. when free transfers were in effect, there was no incentive to not be losing, creating a snowball effect of depopulation, eventually resulting in servers that got stomped so hard and so often that their ratings were too spread out for the rating system to handle, and since rating is nearly zero sum, now its practically impossible to overcome the gap.

the only change weve had in the system – paid transfers – is arguably bad. anet added a minor disincentive to transferring and didnt base it off of wvw. sure, it coagulates populations some. but all it does is kitten off the people who arent happy where they are a little more than free transfers did. and its just a stopgap measure where an intensive overhaul is needed. so id argue paid transfers is bad: it sets a bad example, its lazy design, and its only half relevant to the problem its trying to solve.

Lol…after 6 people tried to take Wood last night and I solod 5, we have one left that two of us killed and surprise…we had an self invite to party by an ET player to tell us about SF zergs.
