I was wondering why the game was a Zerg festival.

Then it hit me. It’s not the downed state that is the problem. It’s not the small groups that ninja it all as those are my favorites. It’s not the one to two major high damage skills each class has out there.

It’s something simpler…

If you want to truly limit the power of zergs without having to hamper each class directly, then simply make an update that does the following:

While in WvW all automatic targeting set through F11 is disabled. All of those options that allow any player to lock on to the nearest target from simply panicking and buttonmashing specially in zergs, gone….

…no more aimbotting as this is the only video game where in any PvP or even WvW allows these auto targeting options intended to make PvE easier for new and casual players to be used.

Disable the automatic targeting and all of those zergs will now have the responsibility of targeting using TAB. It’s the responsible thing to do as auto target vs comp is ok, but against other players, its Player Character vs Another player character.

I guarantee you that all of those giant zergs will fall apart in their panic mode.

Do this, and it becomes more about mastering the classes.

People love to shoot down D/D Elementalists, but to make them work all targeting has to be disabled. It’s either that or their escape skills get them killed. In short, when you die to a D/D ele, you are getting killed through manual targeting, nothing automatic. It is am earned kill vs a lot of players who don’t even have to look at the d/d and just can hit a button and connect a skill.

Of course there are some builds out there where auto targeting means death.

However that should never exist in any PvP form whatsoever. It’s up to the player to target enemies and do the job of tracking them, not the computer automatically connecting everything for them.

However like I said….PvE is different, its computer controlled enemies that are faster than human time in command input and have their commands queued up faster as a group than we can think. That’s where auto targeting is fair along with those combat options.

Automatic targeting is hardly the the cause of zerging.

Zerging is caused by

A) downed state, you can’t finish people off when you’re in a smaller group and you’re fighting a bigger group (it can be done, but it’s -much- harder than it should be)

B) AOE cap limit, this one is really stupid imo being limited to 5 targets, it cripples smaller groups fighting bigger groups

C) Because of bigger groups absolutely crushing smaller groups it’s vital to stay in a decent size group or you get run over repeatedly unless you’re one of the classes that are really good at escaping (mesmer, D/D ele, thief)

Things like the quaggens and such need to have more effect on the zone. There needs to be more objectives to control so you have to split up the zerg.

But I doubt any of this will ever change. I don’t see them overhauling the system they have in place. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of fun. But it also has some massive problems that need fixed in order to keep people playing. I used to play about every night in WvW but now I’m down to about once a week or two weeks just for a pvp fix.

Also, there will be a zerg no matter what you do because people will group into big groups and do stuff together, which is fine. The problem is when there’s no counter to it besides your own zerg. That’s the issue.

Honestly, I think this is a really bad idea. I want non zerg action more than most, but you can’t make the game frustrating for the majority just to satisfy the minority. Making the targetting manual only, especially with the questionable controls in the game, will do nothing but frustrate most casual players and make them not want to play. If this change got rid of zergs, it’d be because all those people stopped playing and the game was about to die.

Zerging will always be here and is not inherently bad. What we need is more options and opportunity for small groups, not things that make the game worse for zergers.

I didn’t even know F11 did something

I just use TAB targeting and AoEs, then it’s gg easy

Quit WvW and Gw2 in August 2013
