A few WvW questions.
Idk NA meta but in EU it is like this:
- U basically follow commander or take a lead by yourself if u have a tag, u can aso raid as guild and fight other groups. The point for ppt is to cap points, hold them and get points, contribute to whole amount of points and then win match-up. The point of fighters or so called gvgers is to fight other goups with guild and have fun out of it + lootbags
- As for rewards u have WvW ranks which give u exclusive titles that only enemy can see tho ;/ But u get silver, boh and items from chest for getting next WXP lvls( WvW ranks) which can have best eq in game, legendary precursors etc. For capping points u get lord’s bag and silver + karma for doing events. From players u can loot a lot of stuff :P basically everything. During Tournaments for winning u get tickets to buy rare skins and some nice stuff, outside of tournaments for 1. place u get 3 addiction wxp chests and nothing more except a position at http://mos.millenium.org/eu/matchups/ and officila ladders.
- As for server’s, we had some HUGE issue 2 months ago, but now lag is lower. It still happen( as I know NA is fine, the problem is in EU) and can crash ur game / disconect you during fight. There are also overhuge queues during prime time.
- WvW is worth doing if u want to get ut server higher in ladder or just enjoy capping, defending and fighting. If u chose gvg playstyle it is fun( at last for me) to fight others, kill em, get prestige and make everyone know about ur guild and get some loot from enemy
. Also u have to sharp ur teamplay etc. if u chose this gamestyle.

I don’t play on Yak’s Bend (I play on a different NA server) but I’ve heard nothing but good things about Yak’s Bend’s WvW community. From what I hear it is a very active and welcoming one, and you’ll have plenty of other players and guilds to play with/against.
Meaningful rewards for WvW.
If you mean in-game rewards such as loot, gold, karma, experience, etc, standard WvW is not the most “efficient” way time-wise to obtain those. There is a more casual, server-less game mode that shares some similarities with WvW called Edge of the Mists that can be farmed (and often is) for these things. But the best way to farm these things is in PvE.
That said, standard WvW is fun. A lot of fun. It’s ultimately the only reason I’ve still been playing this game since launch. And even though I and many others on this forum might criticize certain aspects of it, for the most part it’s because we love the game mode so much and just want it to be better. For me this fun far outweighs the relatively lower in-game rewards in WvW compared to other game modes.
Server Performance during WvW battles.
There have been occasional issues in the past with all players simultaneously experiencing skill lag during large battles on the maps. For the most part though Anet has been very good about addressing these issues, and I haven’t been experiencing them lately (for a couple months now). Unfortunately some individual players still seem to experience more isolated performance issues in WvW that don’t seem to be server-related. The causes of these isolated cases are more mysterious, and from my understanding much harder for Anet to tackle. There is an active thread in this forum right now where those players have been detailing these concerns. Personally I haven’t been having any issues with latency or lag.
And finally if WvW is something worth doing in GW2.
If you like large-scale PvP, it is absolutely, 100% worth doing. Following a good commander as a group while chatting together on teamspeak, and managing to win fights and take objectives from other teams is incredibly satisfying. If you ever played old-school Alterac Valley in WoW, it’s like that but 100 times better. There’s a learning curve, so be patient with it, but I guarantee if you take the time and you enjoy this style of game mode, you’ll like it a lot.
If by chance you find that you are unable to get your whole guild into Yak’s Bend for whatever reason, such as if it reaches server capacity, I’ll humbly give a shout-out to my server, Stormbluff Isle. I’ve found the community there to be incredibly welcoming and, on the whole, very mature as well. Good luck, have fun.
There is always something meaningful to do in WvW.
Ive seen 1 commander with 40 followers taking down full sized zergs one by one by just being awesome and organized.
WvW seems to be where Arena Net is putting their money and effort with the comming expansion aswell.
Roaming partys are valuable aswell, for the moments when fewer members are online.
Disrupting enemy stragglers, sneak capping camps, towers and keeps. Reinforcing valuable locations with siege etc.
You will never find lacking in WvW.
But i suggest you to play on the EU servers, something like Desolation (My server).
Its great to have players from varying timezones to fill out the oh-so-important gaps where some other servers have done jsut the same.

On the higher servers you can find enemies (but maybe “only pugs” at a given time) all day long, in EU it’s a bit more centered around prime-time (~19-24 CEST).
Meaningful rewards for WvW.
If you play the PPT (point per tick) way, you can lose money over time in wvw, winning the match gives you nothing (ohh sorry, +4 masterwork to salvage.. thats like.. 5-10 min playing in pve?), defending gives you nothing (only the lootbags from killed attackers).
WvW Rank gives you nothing, you can get it faster in a semi-pve way (eotm, killing doors and npcs and not players) than playing wvw.
There are unofficial GvG (~15v15-20v20 TDM) matches, they are fun, but no reward.
Server Performance during WvW battles.
Depends on which IP has your current borderland, there are some which makes it unplayable for some players (yup, none knows what is the problem exactly, as no official answer from Anet), in 3-way 80 man battles it’ll be lagfest, spamming a skill for 5 min to use it once..
But with lower numbers it’s usually not horrible.
And finally if WvW is something worth doing in GW2.
WvW is worth doing if you have fun while doing it.
There is no other thing to it.
If you like the combat-style, if you like to fight with more-than-5 players in gw2.
Ohh right, about winning the match..
Off-time coverage will decide which server wins, more than your personal skills. It does not matter if you have a strong guild if your enemy has 3x your numbers, they will most of the time get more points (even if losing the fights).
TBH I would wait until Heart of Thorns is released.
WvW is the only endgame thing to do as well as sPvP. PvE is terrible in this game, this from who used to be a PvE players in previous MMOs
Things in WvW have gone from bad to worse to such neglect that if WvW was a child you’d call social services!
We’re finally getting a replacement WvW with HoT, which some do not like the look of as it’s just seems like a clone of EotM, which has turned into a karma train map for PvE players.
Lag in WvW has not been fixed in 3 years, and just recently we finally got one guy to look into it, which resulted in a reduced population on all maps for all servers. And it seems this is their fix for it as, as uaual, we have not heard from them regarding the lag again since!
If you do want to buy GW2 wait for one of their 75% off sales, they’s had a couple in the last few months and they will have another before HoT comes out.
Put it this way, my guild usually does WvW for upto 8 hours everyday since launch! But this week it’s only been a couple hours with many going off to play DayZ or GTA5 or others games. I havent played GW2 all week except to grind the Silverwastes to see if I can get the beta portal.
tl;dr IMHO I would not recommend GW2 to anyone until after HoT is released.
