Well I just hear that a commander on my server was off to talk to a dev.

Why them? Cos they led the EB Karma Trains most of the time at prime times?!

You are not going to get the information you need to improve WvW if that is all you are going to talk to!
Just look what happened when you made EOTM, you got players who dont even play WvW to test that and it became nothing more than a K-Tain map and leveling alt area!
You are just making the same old mistakes if you do this!

You need to talk to the smaller guilds and players who run smaller groups, the ones who actually use their skills and tactics and builds to defeat larger groups.

And did any dev actually go to Bronze league?

It seems that perhaps you have wasted an opportunity to get some real insight into how the non-zergers play WvW, how WvW should be; not how you want WvW to be i.e. full of zergs.

EotM beta was fun and didn’t involve too much zerging. We had lots of roamers, smaller groups and sometimes medium sized groups on there during the testing windows. Concerns were raised about different stuff like some strong NPC and AI stuff, but during testing we could make use of offensive and defensive means pretty well.

The k-train just evolved as soon as people realized how much rewards can be in there, by just rallying on one single taco. Also, the volatile nature of the map, lack of team play on a larger scale and so on don’t feed the fuel of smaller groups who try to turn the tide of battles.

You need to talk to the smaller guilds and players who run smaller groups, the ones who actually use their skills and tactics and builds to defeat larger groups.

They did / still do. Many devs joined raiding guilds and groups of different sizes. I also know of at least two devs who had really intense talks with their hosting guilds. I’m sure the guys at Arenanet already have visions and goals, how the game should work and how it should be played, but drawing the best possible conclusions can sometimes be hard to impossible. They kittened up at some, but that’s just the game of life. Let’s hope that their next steps will take us all in better directions.
Blaming and badmouthing won’t help anyone, though — especially if your assumptions are only based on verbal propaganda.

Actually feedback during EotM beta was that it was too much in the PvE direction. ANET was proud of their new boss mechanics and didn’t want to change anything. They didn’t realize that people didn’t go to WvW to PvE.

As for the OP: I really don’t understand your complaint. If you want to zerg, go to a high tier server. If you want to roam, go somewhere lower. Some of us actually enjoy large scale fights.

Don’t cry about EotM. I intend to level 2 more alts when they fix the trait system, and I would much rather do it in EotM than the PvE maps. Unless I can farm enough Tomes of Knowledge…

Visceral Effect had a DEV (Jessica Boettinger) for the past 4 weeks on Europe. Despite the timezone differences, she did join several of our raids where we raid between 18 ~ 22 guys. We as a guild, focus mainly on openfield fights, scrims and GVGs and definitely showed her how we play WVW and not karma trains/ppt crap.

We had several talks on how to improve WVW on a guild basis with fights, instead of crap nobody really cares about. Will there come anything from it? Probably not, however Devs did go through the hassle to find guilds that do something differently than the good ol’ karma trains.

I actually gained a lot of respect for our Dev’s after hearing this. And yes, many of them did play in fight guilds/offpeak timezones and havoc squads. They receive a lot of hate on these forums, but that’s actually some real dedication to get to know the community. +1 Devs.

EoTM was never supposed to be “the 5th WvW map”, just like its not now. Its working as intended, more or less. Its “WvW Lite” a place where players can karma train or mess around in while waiting for their queue. Most WvW players rather wait around in LA than hang around the EoTM karma trains but thats their personal preference, EoTM is just to provide them an alternative to sitting around.

Also karma trains were a lot more prevalent in WvW before EoTM, thankfully EoTM gave PVEers a place to run their train instead of the normal borderlands.

My assumptions are based on the actions of mods for the last 18 months, as well as interviews which you can view on youtube.

Based on past performance I conclude the following:

1) Anything they do decide to change, they wont/cant talk about
2) Anything they want to change, they wont change any time in the near future.

Which places us exactly where we were before! Noone knowing about the future of WvW, devs not talking, and players getting fed up and leaving as WvW still doesnt get any real content updates in the next 6 months!

The commander the dev on my server talked to wasnt the commander of the guild they were in. Yes after I hear this other people said they also talked to the dev a little themselves.
But how did they know when they could talk to them? I didnt, I didnt even see the dev or hear from them in the entire 4 weeks! Unless the dev was running with the EB K-Train most of the time.
Yes not all EB commanders are K-Train commanders, but this one mostly is.

So from my current pov it seems yet again the devs will be getting info from the wrong WvW players, mainly the ones who like to zerg in the karma trains. Just like how most of the players who tested EOTM were sPvP players.

And what has happened to the Forum Communications Team?! A couple of them came on here last week, asked a few questions, got bombarded with pleas to fix and update WvW, and we’ve not heard from them since, again!

If I get confirmation regarding making our QA Sessions with Jessica public and the GW2 Playerbase are interested, I wouldn’t mind summing it up and providing a giant overview of what we talked about, Anet’s stance and things which are being considered in the woodwork.

It’s always easy to jump the gun and while I personally see the state of the game grim (mainly due the lack of competition, players burned out), it did show Devs do care more about the competitive WvW side than you think. And Im not talking about those PPT Heroes Activities which no one cares about.

Hi,
I am a guild leader on Devona’s Rest. We were honored to have John Corpening in our guild. We are indeed a fun loving group of misfits, not a large WvW force, we often run in a small group of skilled players but by no means zerg bust or a zerg. Our strongest hours are in the late PST evening when alot of our server has logged off to go to bed.

During the tournaments we encountered some very rough nights and some very good fights. John was there through all of this, he saw things at a different level. John remained fairly anonymous, some of my own guild was not aware he was a Dev. He heard alot of raw comments in map chat, guild chat, ect. about the things people liked and didnt like and saw first hand why. We have a better understanding of some of the challenges he faces and he definitely has a better understanding of the challenges a guild like ours that loves to WvW faces.

They did this on their free time, I know that it was a fun exercise for them (I hope) but it was still a work related item. John listened and watched and picked up on some things that werent even complained about to him (like his siege trolls post).

It has been quiet without much activity from Dev’s in the WvW forums in the past few months. I am glad they are taking an interest and anything that comes out of this is better then silence.

I want to thank him and all the Devs for trying to get a better view and understanding. I know that they were spread out across the servers from top to bottom if you go look at the Adopt- a-Dev post.

I think this sums things up, we complained about siege trolled way back when at launch, and continued to do so.
We did get a reply from a mod: They cannot controls a player’s play-style.
We then gave up on complaining about this.

But for John to not even know about this annoyance shows there isnt much communication going on between the WvW devs and the WvW players’ concerns. (Not counting infractions and bans of course).

Sorry but as the saying goes, I’ll believe it when I see it.
And “We cant talk about it” is not seeing, it’s just blowing smoke.

And dont forget the FCT made posts here asking people for their opinions, a few people gave their honest opinions and got infracted for it! Those threads are almost like entrapment :P

If this doesnt make you lose faith in the devs then you really must be in denial!

I think that was the point of the devs getting off their shiny thrones to get in the trenches with us during the season. You’re right they didn’t know the frustrations of their players. I mean yeah we complained and made threads but they didn’t really know what it was like because they didn’t play with us up until now. I think now that they know what’s going on, and what we go through as players of their game, they might be a little more apt to listen.

They likely didn’t do the “Adopt-A-Dev” to pat themselves on the back and say “Good Job devs now let’s go look at our awesome colored doritos.” More than likely they did it because after their feature patch (which was not as “feature-y” as some might have liked) they wanted to see how we took it, what more we want, and to experience it from our POV. Arguments can be made for how “we’ve been asking for the same stuff now for two years” but until the devs actually got to experience it firsthand, I don’t think they realized exactly how badly we wanted the changes. Hopefully this little exercise will steer them in the right direction.

I think it is the first time I see/read that a Dev (Jessica Boettinger) really talked about WvW with guilds and I would like to see how she reacted to some questions.

I still consider the “Adopt a Dev” initiative (as it happened) as a failed opportunity to identify the problems of WvW at their roots:
The vast majority (as I could read in the adopt sticky) spend their time in big guilds, in the gold leagues, where coverage is not an issue and where big numbers of players are. They rarely visited silver or bronze league, ran with PUGs, went to off-times e.g. EU night time (which is great for the Devs based in PST time zone).
The goal of the initiative was to get a good picture of the state of the game in its entirety. With the approach that is documented so far, they chose to see the “puffy clouds and butterflies” side of WvW and not the dark sides and problems we so often talked about here on the forums.

Im pretty sure they realized the state of the game. Atleast 2 guilds disbanded where Devs joined and those were pretty important ones in the GVG scene too. We explained it all and why to Jessica which definitely opened her eyes. Some talks we had were harsh, especially from my end due the limited time they are residing in due other important games launching or getting into an Alpha-Phase.

However, topics are actually being read that are posted here. Especially topics whom have concerns to the game and need improvements. Though, topics that are rude or plain rants/complaints are often being ignored as Anet values constructive feedback and critism, no whiney schoolkid drama apparently.

The fact she was able to mention several topics I either forgot about or being big is something that rings a bell. It shows the Developers actually read and discuss proper constructed posts which is a good thing. Now, as an induvidual player I was rather disapointed as I’m not playing the game like the most players due (the whole coverage wars / PPT / Siege Heroes thing) – which may again alarm some people here to say Devs joined a wrong guild.

However, with the current decline in GVGs and competition, I felt it was somewhat my obligation to represent the competitive scene of the game, which is GVGs and general fights on the battlefield and how to balance that. While that will be coming to the game, Anets main priority right now is working / fixing on the Population Imbalances, Troll Griefing and other topics you have been discussing here. It is a let down for me and truthfully something that had to be addressed 1,5 years ago. But hey, for the future playes who will remain in this game and love those things it will be a good thing no? Sadly, everything being released from this point is too late, as I’ve been saying in the discussions we had during the adopt-a-dev program. The competition and guilds that created the competition will never return, sadly.

We did have constructive criticism, over a year ago! I do find the fact that two of the guilds which hosted the devs disbanded. But what good is there opening their eyes if the end result is still not fixing it; and if they do it’ll be a year before we see anything.

You’re making the false assumption that the participating developers took nothing away from their time with their adoptive guilds. This is untrue, many of our developers came back with feedback from interactions with their respective guilds, and in fact, we have a meeting today to discuss feedback, lessons learned and other relevant discussion around the program.

Don’t set yourself up to see changes immediately. The tournament just ended and the team still needs time to parse the feedback, identify issues and prioritize solutions. If you expect immediate change just because the tournament is over, you will be disappointed. Change takes time and careful consideration.

It sure would be nice to get some interaction and commentary from a dev. I feel like despite all these initiatives being taken they’re always 1 sided. The playerbase provides all the information they can but developers never join the discussions or provide feedback. We just get the same canned message ’we’ll take it back to our superiors’ or ’we’re going to have a meeting about this in the futute’ but never anything is provided back to the players in the form of dialog of substantive releases.

Ranger CDI, the Guild ones, etc. Feels like the only place to get real interaction is the PvP forum…

YES! please at least summarize those places where you would like to see changes even if they may not be practical in the short term. It would be really nice to at least see a little honesty about what they think are problems and what might have a chance of being address at some point rather than either, a completely unstructured open conversation about fantasy ideas (ie the CDIs and the 2 discussions about populations and coverage in these forums) or the normal complete vacuum of dev discussion about WvW.

Are you kidding me or are you being serious?!

Are you telling me it took this “initiative” for you to realise 3 from a long list of issues with WvW; issues which were first brought up well voer 18 months ago!?!

Not forgetting that we already received a reply months ago regarding the siege trolls, which was you cannot control players’ actions or the way they play.

Please tell me you got more from this?

And as for us expecting things soon, we dont, based on past performance, we expect WvW to get an update in 2 years time.
Sorry but that will be too late. Already you’ve seen guilds disband as Grotesque.6480 has stated. From this you should realise that you need to work fast and hard to save WvW from yourselves! If you dont more and more players will leave, and they will not be waiting patiently for another 2 years for another small update!

You need to re-prioritise your plans for WvW, your plans are currently, well nonexistent really.

To be honest you need to scrap forthnightly Living Story updates and alternate!
Spent 2 weeks on Living Story, then the following 2 weeks on WvW and sPvP.
WvW is dying if all you are going to do is “discuss” things and not lay out a plan of action you are willing to share with the community; because frankly, telling us you cannot talk about it is just forcing more players away.

Complained about WvW before it became cool.

Miles ahead of the Ranger CDI. Congrats.

While we didn’t get a huge amount of ANet feedback and not everyone got what they wanted, I think the last big patch contained a lot of evidence that they did read that thread and addresses some of the issues raised in it fairly well, specifically by eliminating the need for Signet of the Beastmaster and making longbow power builds viable in WvW.

@Grotesque

Was 2 years not enough time to look at things and change it? Oh wait! It’s not your failed “Esport” or PvE.

Be glad you already got my money for this game, because I would never buy it again.

I am going to do something I might get some stick for on my server… I’ve been asking devs to come and talk to us for months now but no reply… However, last night Kresh summed things up perfectly… so I am just going to quote him – I am sure he won’t mind and if he does I will be back to delete…

[04:00:10] <Rayya tag>how are things going on sfr?
[04:01:32] <[Hell] Kresh >Fine if you ask me, server is still alive after more than 2 years of Gw2. That s already a nice goal. How to keep it alive is what bother me actually
[04:02:36] <Holm >good on sfr, but not enough enemies
[04:02:41] <[Hell] Kresh >it could indeed be better but just the fact we still have players and an active community after so long time is indeed nice
[04:03:18] <[Hell] Kresh >other communities are failing hard to keep the players together
[04:05:44] <[Hell] Kresh >and i personally blame anet for the following reasons. No new maps in more than 2 years. (wtf really i played 4,4k hours in the same maps, may i be a little sick about?)
[04:06:07] <[Hell] Kresh >no new class in two years (3k hours with my necro and i don t like other class, sick once again)
[04:06:15] <[Hell] Kresh >no new weapons
[04:06:43] <[Hell] Kresh >no new utility
[04:06:52] <[Hell] Kresh >game too static. it s easy to get sick
[04:07:13] <[Hell] Kresh >only luck Anet have is that there isn t any relevant option
[04:07:46] <[Hell] Kresh >they will notice at the first real good game that will release

This was very interesting insight to some of SFR leader’s thinking. Thanks for posting. Here are some snips from an actual Desolation map chat, which probably make you giggle:
- I don’t know why our server is always outnumbered. So sick of this
- [Call of the Mists]
- Only solution to outnumber is /ragequit
- Getting bored facing the same server every week…
- Man those SFR are everywhere!

None of these was my map chat comment, just sort of summarize the general feeling of the disgruntled PuGs. Hard core players and guilds are generally happy as there is always opponents to fight and good amount of loot (thanks to SFR! Yes, I am thanking you :-) ). Jokes are still flying in the TeamSpeak. Some players actually enjoy being the underdog, but the fair weathers hate it. In most MMORPGs the potential rewards are the driving force on what areas of the game players are playing. WvWvW offers less rewards than EotM + pve —> less players.

It is interesting that SFR leaders like to think other servers and their communities as failures. This has been repeated in many previous threads and deleted posts. The fact is, Desolation is still EU rank 2 server and yes we are pvx, so getting the pve people to WvWvW is tied to rewards. Lack of achievements and rewards in Season 3 hurt lot. So are you implying that EU rank 3-27 servers are even bigger failures?

The lack of enemies to fight could have been avoided by keeping the balance of power. With current meta of SFR running a blob from morning till night (only hours it doesn’t have a blob is probably at night, that is when I do not play) and enemy servers being outnumbered, of course makes the enemy servers try to avoid fights and leads eventually to less loot bags for you as well. I still remember those times when several SFR players and guilds were also tired to face Vinuzah every week and even decidedly tanked to lower tier. Now cannot you see who is the new Vizunah? Disclaimer: I do not mean that SFR is exactly like Vizunah, because VS of course was a French server, you have same multi-lingual problems like Desolation, so many different languages to tackle on an international server.

The more you stomp enemies with sheer numbers, the less opponents you soon have. It is simple as that. Desolation is sometimes doing the same on those weeks it is not facing SFR. Weaker servers show up in good numbers during the reset, but during the week they have already given up as the point lead is so big that they have no chances to win and don’t like to be over run by bigger numbers.

SFR leaders should have done everything in your power to avoid over stacking, but you kept on recruiting more. It is obvious that players flock to the top servers. Desolation is still also getting new guilds and players. Driven by Fury [dF] just joined us. Almost no queues at Deso = great for guilds.

We have actually had new maps: EotM and the ruins changes to the borderlands, but I consider both of them as epic failures. Also the new pve explorable map areas: Dry Top and Southsun Cove are both highly irritating. I rather solo the Orr temple events than do the jumping puzzle kind “fun” Dry Top offers. Their new map designs in every game mode went way too far in verticality, choke points and gimmicks. The old maps were much better.

I agree that the lack new skills, weapons and professions is disappointing. GW1 had 2 full expansions and Eye of the North. GW2 hopefully would someday also get more permanent pve map zones, dungeons, professions, skills for all professions and pvp modes e.g. guild-vs-guild, sort of smaller and balanced version of WvWvW with 2 small opposing keep and open fields, few hills + river + bridges in between, objective is to capture the enemy keep. Team Death Match sadly won’t work well due stealth and excessive burst in this game, so I am not waiting for TDM mode as it would just turn into “who ganks the 1st” game mode.

Developing completely new maps for WvWvW is a massive under taking, so I don’t expect them to come any time soon. The 1st priority should be fixing the existing bugs (falling damage bug, ending up underneath structures or ground by accident etc) and restoring the balance. Yes, this means that Arenanet should change scoring and fix the WvWvW population imbalances. We have CDIs on this topic and I think we will see some changes in next 6-12 months.

Here is a tip for Arenanet to revive WvWvW: add weekly achievements to WvWvW, which are on every week, even outside the Tournaments. E:g. kill 50 enemy invaders, capture 5 supply camps, 3 towers and 1 keep. Each completed week will give player a chest with 2-3 random items (of at least rare category) + valuable ascended crafting materials (damask etc). The crafting materials must be valuable and not empyreal fragments or bloodstone dust. Rewards should be completed only in WvWvW, not in EotM. After this you will see much more players flock to WvWvW!

Diarea Devirotus, gaem ded.

SFR overblobbed wvw.
Kresh is sick with winning at any cost.
SFR is uberoverstacked server that plays with 30% brain ON, cause other server can’t compete with more at all.

but you better make your server better , kitten. But no, i see you most time here coming and crying in walls of text, how bad is Anet doing, How sfr blobs, need more atention to wvw, need more balance and all your other BS, everyone does blob.
U as sick as any SFR blobber that whines about enemies that can’t beat us.

- coverege.
- off time map jumping.
- quantity.
That what does server #1 in PPT. And PPT died in t1 with Vizunah after season 1 (“I sent Troma to coma”). Right now it’s or you loose or you SFR.

Stop bs the forum, it won’t help. Get your kitten together and beat that SFR ubberblobs.

After your meeting and compiling feedback, can you make a post summarizing what you learned? I know you can’t make promises as to what you can fix, but it would be nice to see what’s being talked about.

Fun to se Deso say same as SFR, we blame Deso for blobbing, the problem is as soon as we get resistance with usually is around 20.00 then we have queue on all 4 maps, yesterday at home map it was 1 guild group with 30-40players and one Pug group with around 40players then problem was Deso had 1 big blob and same with Elona so both server ran with ~80man group were deso had 3 guilds running together (close) so ofc it ended up with both commanders running close so you cod match, its normal and it would be stupid to not do that, when you know it will be 80 you face (for all 3 servers) that you don’t run as 1 group.

Only thing I see that can fix it is penalty’s, like bigger group then 30 then you take 10% more damage, bigger group then 50 you take 20% more damage.

Not exactly. It was intended as a place for people to visit during queues (are are correct about that part. of course since wvw is much less popular these days, queues aren’t really a problem other than reset night). The difference is that EotM was intended as a place for ANET to try their new ideas for the future of WvW. Unfortunately, the feedback was that most people didn’t like any of their ideas so it was back to the drawing board.

@All,

I personally think the Adopt a dev initiative was really successful. Hugh (nightmare) screened 3 times or so during reset night. It was incredibly insightful to hear his comments. It was great hearing about WHY anet made certain changes. I’d say it was the single best communication from ANET that I’ve seen.

We need to see MORE of these types of programs, not less.

Vague, open-ended, fantasy threads. There is no indication that any of them will lead to anything in the near (6 months) term. There has been no indication that anything will be done in WvW in the near term.

It’s more of the same attempt to appease the serious outrage in the forums and in game by creating these threads to give the false sense that actual changes are going to be made. As sooo many people have pointed out, we had a CDI session over a year ago and got NOTHING. I guess the newer players are going to buy it…
