Adding tension to WvW with alerts
I understand what you’re saying, but I like that map awareness is one more way your server can be better (or worse) than your enemies. For example, if the enemy flips the northeast camp on your BL and nobody on your server realizes it, then they set up rams on your NE tower without being detected because nobody on your server went to scout the NE, IMO, you should suffer the consequences, as opposed to having a flashing alert that there are enemies in your back yard and maybe you otta go check it out.
Until you loose a camp because you had to click messages away in the middle of a fight. Bad idea. Besides, as slingblade said, being aware of what happens in your realm is part of the game.
Alerts should go to those (Guild) who claim a tower or castle. It should be in the form of a message and only apply to the proper ranks or guild member settings. This way you are not spamming everyone or you just make it a option in the chat box.
Either way, claiming something is one thing to order upgrades and what not, why not have the guards give you a warning that someone is attacking.

Same problem, flashing messages interrupting combat. The only way I could see this work is if it’s limited to a (de)selectable chat channel.
Assuming that it works like the invasion notifications, it wouldn’t interrupt combat or require any clicking to dismiss

DAoC had a really great mechanic where the guild that claimed a keep or tower would get messages in guild chat when a guard near their tower was killed. The message looked like “a guard from your tower was killed with 25 enemies in the area” and showed up in guild chat even if you were in a PVE zone.

That is a good system. It definitely feels like something like that is missing out in WvW
The current sword system is too limiting. They could tie them into the WvW maps so the last activity reported by a guard in each area would show up.
A map message sent out from guards and scouts being attacked with a rough estimate of the enemy numbers would be very interesting. These would be passive, easily turned off for those that don’t care, would direct players into more fights and would help eliminate the need for the very unrewarding job of PC scouting.

Agree. If that is what it takes to succeed I wonder how much fun those people are having sitting in a tower. How many days of that before they decide to play a different game? Does Anet think that is ‘rewarding’ game play?
I think an invasion notice for the claiming guild would be a great idea. Make it look just like that stupid Scarlett message that pops up and lures away all of our defenders at random times.
if you have ever played PvP you’d know there’s nothing to click it just pops up same as the wxp message you get when ya kill or flip something.
my server BP has no problem reporting or looking at the map, and with the timers/overlays most people should be using, it’s basically the same thing just not third party.
I think they should flash wvw messages in pve like they do with the stupid pve messages about Scarlet that pop up in wvw. All the people afking in LA would see “Green is attacking red keep on EBG!”
People would quit. Scarlet is annoying but the message pops up infrequently, if messages from guards were done the same way it could well flood the chat – there is always a camp or keep attacked. Put them in a separate chat channel so people can choose whether they want to see them.
Even then I think this is not a good idea because it gives too much information to easily. Small teams wouldn’t be able to do much, it’s just fun to take a tower with just three or four players. No baiting for larger groups either, as anyone could just see what is going on from the numbers being broadcast.
I dunno, maybe as an upgrade for keeps, that way spam would be limited.
What if everyone could just pick one NPC to have as their designated alert guard.. whenever that guard gets aggroed, the player is notified.
interact with any other guard to switch. this way you’re in control of what messages you’ll get and it still encourages team co-ordination since you need a network of players to cover a whole map.

Keep an eye on map to see if somethings contested, have roamers/scouts that report enemies locations right away, wvw doesnt need a message that says xx tower is under attack

Don’t argue with idiots, they pull you down their level and own you with experience.
What about making NPC scouts a higher tier personnel upgrade, and maybe a 3rd tier for camps?
That way it isn’t instant and limits the spamming.
I know this is an older post, but it could be a good addition to WvW and allow more people to play instead of always scouting, especially on servers with low coverage times.
I still think when the WvW map opens showing alerts from NPCs on that map would be unobtrusive, would direct players where a fight can be had and what numbers they can expect to encounter. It would certainly make for better and more frequent fights.
Essentially each controlled guard area on the map could have a hover over notification of any enemy movements within the last couple minutes.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
get a second monitor. get one of the (many) api based maps up on it. enjoy.

Not sure where the disconnect is, go into and PLAY PvP you’ll see neat messages pop up as your trying to win the match….now just take those types of messages and put em in WvW.
I have an overlay, I use mos etc, that isn’t what im talking about.
Yay! more dumbed down game play. If I wanted this I’d go back to playing WoW. Seriously, teach people to scout and map read, it isn’t that hard and takes away from the need for situational/map awareness.
Or being in Pve and receive your world borderland is outmaned prepare your swords and fight.

Scouting is highly unrewarding and for 99.9999% of players boring/un-fun. Most players want to log in and get into a fight. Any feature that makes for more fights particularly fights in a style a player likes, is a good feature.
Sneaking past a guard point would become strategically important. Opening up the map a player would instantly know X amount of players were seen headed toward Y camp Z minutes ago. Both of these scenarios would make for a more engaging WvW experience especially in lower tiers where fights can be sparse particularly in off peak hours.

Now that would be much more useful than NPC scouts!
This is what I do and I enjoy it more than anything apart from commanding, and it sure beats stationary scouting!
I think overall opening up the map and checking the situation isn’t so difficult that we need such a feature. As mentioned we’ve got multiple ways to keep track of things, and scouting may be boring to some but not everyone.
Try to come up with an idea to reward your scouts to encourage more scout rotations with your community, if they’re cooperative enough they’ll share their gold towards those who do a lot of dirty work.

Could actually make guards useful other than just free points! Make it so you can’t hit or be hit by the guard otherwise he announces your location.
Guild merits for an automated Scout alert/info sub screen for claimed Keeps for a limited time.
If that be the case there should be a way to get merits in wvw.
Maybe guild members get a function to donate Badges of Honor, a bit of karma and spending WvW Skill points (for those that have everything they want or literally all of the WvW skills) for converting to a Guild Merit(s).
They should have a stupidly long build time or some requirement that does not make it easy for every guild to do it, but promotes wvw players to have an equal chance to gaining these functions.
It also should be an option for some ranks of a guild to see these notices.
EDIT : Anet says that wvw is a social element, and if something is not bringing players together, then it is effectively going against that. If players are not actually playing, then it is also going against their goal. Scouting, you’re not fighting, thus you’re not playing.

Not only do you fight when you scout, you also have to communicate with the comm and other people on the map. Just because it is small scale does not make invalid or anti social. Scouts are one of the most important jobs in world, along with the people who work on escorting dolys and upgrading camps and towers. Just because they don’t follow the blue dorito does not mean that they don’t fight. You may not see saving a doly from a roamer fighting, but it is and is as important as capping that tower your zerg just opened. They fight to hold camps or retake after an enemy take. Adding an NPC action to do this is redundant and completely unnecessary. What I’d like to see is more rewards for people who do all these things for the thankless people who think world is all about running in the zerg.

It makes sense that a guard at your fort would communicate with you in some way that he was ‘under attack’

Ah, yes. Good point.
Higher rewards is the easy answer.
Problem that comes with it is that the game is rewarding players to afk in the tower/keeps/garrison. How would anyone define what is a scout and what is just an afk player?
Maybe one way to do that is when a player volunteers to be a scout, they have to go to the claimer to give them self a buff that gives them certain abilities that contribute to making scouting have a game play element.
Scout Buff idea :
-Guild can research the buff, and activate it. When active, Guild member applies, and another member (a higher ranked member with permissions to do so) can accept the application all via Guild Window. The member applying to scout must go to the claimer to apply the buff after being accepted. Does not matter if the structure is claimed by another guild, but beneficial if claimed.
-Buff gives magic find, xp, wvw xp, and karma buffs that can stack with other buffs.
-Must NOT go idle for a shorter period of time or else buff will be taken away from you.
-Scout buff lasts at most 1 hour and at least 15 min. Based on player, in order to re claim the buff you have to wait double the time you already applied for. 1 hour Buff = 2 Hour cooldown for re claim / 15 min Buff = 30 min cooldown. Also ends if you die and could not waypoint within structure, thus counting as a failed event.
-Counts an event for yourself. Completed if the structure is still owned by your world at time ended, and failed if it was taken during your time. You are rewarded accordingly.
-Scout buff has limited range from the structure. If you leave range the buff will go away, thus cooldown is applied. Buff changes color from Green in range, to Yellow and Red when close to out of range of Structure.
-There can only be 1 scout per structure.
-Can be seen when opening the map up only. Otherwise Scout shows up as a different colored dot overlapped by Cmder tag.
-Player gets 2 radar traps of two options must choose before using if changed after deployment then cooldown will apply.
—Invisible traps that ping when triggered (enemy players only)
—Visible traps with a fixed range radar that pings enemies (player and NPC) for each pulse.
All the visual elements are visible ONLY to the player with the Scout buff.
—Deploy able by mortars.
—1 Min cooldown to deploy (replace) another type of radar trap, if damaged, destroyed, or triggered it will go into cooldown for next deployment for 5 mins.
—If the scout is part of the same guild that is claiming the structure then instead of 2, you can deploy 4 at a time.
Achievement ideas:
X# of Repel events during Scouting
X# of Deployed Radar Traps
X# of Hours Scouting
X# of Kills during Scouting

But interpreting the map is fun, you can tell a lot by how it changes, messages would trivialize it.
Sneaking past a guard point would become strategically important.
It already is.
In my opinion, WvW doesn’t need any more tension and stress. Many play WvW for hours on end and it really wouldn’t be healthy to have added tension. Announcements would disrupt voice comms and we’d end up turning off dialog volume or what ever channel they put it under. Also, it could become something troll’s end up abusing to annoy servers. If you thought tagging way points was annoying…. ugh!
Now, for the lower pop servers, I can see where an NPC could be beneficial. Again, it could be annoying though.
If you want to bring tension to WvW give elementalists a new elite skills that let them carry 2 staves and blast people to a 4000 range.

I like the idea, but that’s not a scout’s job. A scout’s job is to roam the entire map, or a portion of the map if there multiple scouts on, and see where the enemies are. Normally ahead of the zerg so that it can aim the zerg towards (or away if their goal is a spot farther along the map) where the enemy is or find out if a keep/camp/etc is manned.
Your idea would be for a Defender’s buff. You fail or succeed based on whether or not you defend your camp/keep/etc when it’s attacked. And defense is something that needs a reward. To make it harder to take places and create more challenging fights.
I think alerts like with scarlets invasions would be a good idea.
It should be restricted to T3 SM, Keeps, Towers thou so you know its worth your time trying to defend them/come to there rescue.
Anything less then T3 is just flipping material for the karma train, we don’t need to know about those.
Gonna have to align myself against this idea.
1. Concealment and surprise are major factors when attacking. Remove that and you’ll just have a situation just as bad as waypoint defending.
2. It discourage solo roaming even worse. As it is now when you contest a camp rarely is it ever 1 – 2 people who come to investigate.
3. This is my biggest reason why no, if you don’t already love the scarlet minion message ( why they have this in all game types….) then your gonna absolutely just love getting spammed alert messages every 2-3 mins only to find out its a bunch of d/p teefs trolling you. Sure you can say make a way to ignore the messages but that just defeats the whole purpose of the system.
The contested swords are good enough
It may be for castle and keeps. But not regular towers and camps.
