Advantages to being a Commander
you get a random zerg following you for a while in wvw, till they reealise you dont actually know what you are doing then they disperse

That was funny
Only a WvW commander gets to drive the karma train, until he gets the train killed, then they disperse.

Hey, what are the advantages of spending the 100g to become a commander?
none at all
when you like leading and have some strategic ability, it can be fun for you
but 90% of time you will in rage or typing something to chat, wanna fight? dont be a commander
you get zerglings following you around so you’re typically the last to die
It all depends. My rule of thumb is play WvW consistently for at least 3 months before hatting up.

So this got moved to WvW discussion by a moderator, but doesn’t commander have advantages outside WvW? Like in PvE taking down temples or trying to get a group together for a group event?

groupies and green room access.

Rock Star treatment. That means millions of groupies for some top commanders and waking up in the gutter wondering what happened for others.

commander is a wvw thing (thus why it ended up here). why people who never play wvw get it, i’ll never figure out.
i’ve only ever played on AR (mid level server) so this could be different with a different size / popularity dynamic, but where / when i play people tend to know each other so being able to help the server out whether over team chat or coordinate a larger group as a commander, thats what it’s all about. obviously its easier to gather people when there’s the more visible icon over your head on the map and more people get to know your name, so that’s one advantage i guess…

When doing Balthazar event, it can be nice to coordinate with a big group. Especially when you want to try and start the 3 routes at the same time.
Also doing guild missions it can be nice to coordinate with commander tag.

that’s called letting a lot of people on a map know where you are; not commanding a group of people to take a keep, avoid a zerg, stay alive or any of the many things commanders do in wvw… Blue icon in pve = POI

My guild uses them regularly for bounty hunts.
The advantage to being a commander is that you can get the forces you need to implement your strategy.
Now keeping those forces is another matter altogether
It’s not about the advantages. It’s about the passion/desire. There are no “advantages” to having the tag unless you want to go through the grueling process of earning the trust of those on your server and learning how to actually command properly.
At that point, being a successful commander can be very rewarding and fun, especially if you have a guild supporting you.
You will not get any warm fuzzies when you buy a tag.

you get the /supplyinfo command which tell you how many ppl you have and how much supply you have ( of all ppl In squad)

With Commander, you get some more people that will listen to you and follow you around.
Is it worth the 100 gold?
Yes, for sure, if you’re not scared of actually using it.
This means you buy it with the intention of having the commander icon up most of the time. And you don’t let other people bully you into turning it off when having it on is perfectly fine in most situations.
Complementary Skritt foot massages.
In all seriousness, it affords you the chance for glory, honor, and respect. The good commanders I’ve run with can turn the tide of a game. It’s like being a general. I have great respect for the good commanders. They are known across the server. But with great power (and a blue square) comes great responsibility. The bad commanders I’ve followed still linger in my memory. I recall one fool who led us into a death trap attack on SM, wasted a ton of golems, then fled while the rest of us were trapped in a bad spot, then hurled insults at us. A good commander listens, teaches, communicates on map/team/and voice chat simultaniously. A good commander is in touch with the other commanders on every map and knows when to attack and when to defend. I personally am a grunt and prefer following orders, but if you have the stuff of a good leader, try it out. Godspeed.
People will flock to you in PvE zones. A commander is not strictly for WvW.
I tell this bit of advice to everyone who wants a tag:
Just because you have 100g doesn’t mean you have nothing else to spend it on. There are a multitude of things you can go for rather than a commander tag. I’ll list a few:
– craft level alts
– convert to gems and buy bank space/inventory slots
– buy rare skins
– progress toward your legendary
– buy new gear sets to have a multitude of builds
…just to name a few.
The tag is NOT a convenience item to let people know where you are on the map. The tag is your responsibility.
Just because you have an icon does not mean that you’re a commander. Being a commander means earning the respect of your server by working hard to lead them as best you can.
A commander’s icon will recieve you a lot of attention. How you use it will depend on whether or not the attention is good or bad.
You WILL regret having spent 100g on something that has so little real value. I’ve commanded commanders, and near single-handedly brought one of my previous servers, one I hold dearly, 3 tiers up by organizing them and teaching them my tactics brought over from The Professionals and the Titan Alliance. I can recall on many occasions when I wish I could have my 100g back when a new release comes out.
A commander tag is not for the money lovers. You’re expected to purchase keep and tower upgrades and maintain your own supply of siege to place. Your zerg will not place siege for you.
Just a few words from the wise. Being a commander is by no means easy, and if you have any doubts I advise you not to buy a tag. We all know someone with a commander tag who’s infamous on the server for standing around Lion’s Arch, trolling in map chat and never helping their server in W3. If you’re in it for the benefits, spend your gold elsewhere.
That is all.

All the bad players will follow you.
I wondered why there were so many ‘commanders’ wandering around LA that I never saw in battle.
Vanity is a powerful thing.
I normally have random players follow me in WvW even without the tag, so I finally decided to buy the commander tag to make it easier for them to find me.

I would guess that 3/4 of all commander tags are never used in WvW. People just love to show off.
If you’re buying your own tag, chances are people won’t be following you around so much. You’re a “pug commander” in most peoples’ eyes.
If you’ve got a guild buying it for you, then I’d say get the tag. It means you already have a following and the tag will actually be useful.
