With the paid server deadline coming up, serious WvW guilds are consolidating on the top half dozen servers, so they can have both good timezone coverage and strong opposition. This is a reasonable course of action, and saves ANet the effort of moving many of these players later during inevitable server merges. Many of these servers are marked ‘Full’ and blocked from transfer for most or all of the day, with windows opening for transfers at ‘Very High’ at seemingly random times. I’m one of the people whose guild has moved, and who has been blocked from following.
I have made more than a hundred (probably less than two) transfer attempts over the last four days and got ‘Full’ every time, and I continue to check regularly. Now, server caps, blah blah blah, all irrelevant noise against the fact that this game is worthless to me without my guild. I don’t think I’m alone in this situation either.
So what am I supposed to do here if I don’t get lucky? Wait three months for server populations to drop a lot again? Quit? Ask my guild to transfer to a non-WvW-centric server where we’ll wither?
Welp, finally got in. Hopefully it was because ANet chose to unblock transfers until the 28th, rather than kicking the can down the road and increasing the server caps.
Yeah, that’s kinda the way it looks from here too. I don’t even know if ANet even believes this is a problem, much less if they’re trying to solve it, there doesn’t seem to be anything pertinent in their blogs about paid server transfers or guesting.
Well maybe if not every WvW guild flocked to the same 3 servers we’d have better guild spread and better WvW activity across the board. Convince them to be different and not just flock to the flavor of the month server.
Ya know… It would be funny is the transfer for a gem thing was revoked… that would make my day just laughing at the people who rushed off to high pops and abandoning their former homes~

Agreed. I can’t see why so many people flocked to “T1” servers. I just laugh at people that wait in queues. I am on a high pop server nowhere near T1 (because our WvW guilds all went off to “T1” servers) but I still get what I want to get out of WvW every time I join in on it.
No queue times, no headache. Maybe if people weren’t all flocking to 1 or 2 servers there wouldn’t be issues like this.
Well it makes sense that not everyone can join the top t1 t2 servers else there would be no point for t3 and below servers.
In the long run, there is no point to the many extra tiers of servers for serious WvW players. There aren’t enough players interested in WvW for every server to be competitive. If you want to play on a strong team against strong teams it’s the top tiers or bust. Even the next best thing, Kaineng (where several major WvW guilds moved to do the zero-to-hero thing), does not offer meaningful competition and won’t for weeks (months?) of roflstomping their way up the ladder.

T1 servers at this time largely do not have any queues, except once a week at match start. Certainly Jade Quarry, the server I wish to transfer to, does not. Even on servers that are packed, there are not so many who are committed WvW players. Which is the problem, and the impetus behind the transfers — for WvW to be good you need both a strong server and strong opposing servers Otherwise the matches turn into blowouts that are decided by Sunday night and ghost towns Monday through Thursday.
While there are surely some guilds whose transfer decisions are purely venal, i.e. “lets get with the winners and help ’em win harder”, mostly people just want a game.
Talk to the server WvW leadership. Find out if any blackouts will be held soon. All current T1 servers have had multiple blackouts to get people in recently.

I have and continue to do so, but thanks, a lot of people have got in thanks to these efforts.
hmz, i still belive major guilds will transfer in last day from full servers, cause they hate queue.
And then the drama from the winning train will begin, who cannot actualy win by them self , since they will be on full unorganized servers.
Imo you should think twice before transfer with or without your guild on an winning server.
Regarding merge servers, i doubt, i belive there will be weekly promotions with free transfers to low tiers, wich will help weak wvw servers to rebuild.
If guilds weren’t so ready to server hop, this wouldn’t be an issue. Personally I have been on the same server since the start and I have no intention of moving.
However I would suggest two possible actions which could enable the OP to complete his server transfer.
1) Find a time of day when the server population is lower – I would suggest 2am PST for NA servers, or 3.30am GMT for EU servers may be good starting points.
2) Contact you guildies who have already server hopped. You should arrange a time when they, and any other friendly guilds you can find do a mass logg-off at the same time. This should have the effect of taking the server off of full status and therefore permit your move – however If it was down to me I would class this second method as an exploit, but I have not heard anything official about this.
I did not come up with this idea, I found it on a US server recruitment post.
Well basically was too difficult make 3-4 servers tagged wvwvw like in other games. We would have had a zerg server or a 10vs10 fight for who like one or other and gj for all.

For me it’s just a question of people wanting to group up and play collectively rather than going out as lone wolves on an empty map.
Any decent wvw guilds would not go to some high tier server anyway.
They go to midtier where the fighting is still fierce, coverage is decent and your actions matter.
Those last days will indeed have some crazy migration maneuvers.
And anyone who ends up in a (new) tier 1 server is gonna be cursing himself for being there with all the zergfests, culling and que’s

First of all, mid to low tier servers are there because most of them have the same level of coverage. Second of all, it is still bandwagon hopping.

HoD has been getting 20 v. 100 fights all this week. And we’ve been winning a lot of them. Many people in this thread are making assumptions that just aren’t true.

Dude I’ve played a lot more WvW than you, The question would be better if you actually bothered to look at how the lower tiers are, you probably never been there.
The fighting is a lot more different than at the top, every thing you do has consequences, good or bad. True that there aren’t many people but you have a lot more room to use strategies and tactics. Mid tiers are actually no different than top tiers except that there are just less people, it has about a bit of both, the top tier and the bottem tier.

I enjoy 1v1 as much as the next guy but when it comes down to it they’re simple; effectively fighting on a server vs server level is much more complex and interesting, and I want to be part of that.

And I want fights with some meat to them, there are a hundred fighting games and shooters that do twitch combat better, I expect more out of WvW than small scale skirmishing.
As for me “deserving it”, take a long drop with a short stop. Being able to play with my guild is not too much to ask in Guild Wars 2.

For what it’s worth, I’ve found the lag in large scale engagements to be manageable on a good gaming rig at low or medium settings. The culling remains terrible. If large scale combat weren’t a big draw for me I probably wouldn’t put up with it.
you guys claiming that anything below t3 is a ghost town and non competitive really need to step back and catch a clue. Seriously have you even bothered to look at the scored of other tiers? T6 and T7 NA are the two closest and hotly contested match-ups of the week.
You don’t need 100 man zergs to have fun, in fact, having both played t1 and t8 and t6, I find the lower tiers much more fun (when pansy arsed weak sauce guilds don’t transfer down and kitten match ups). Why? more things small teams can do. none to very short queue times. Much easier to get to know the whole server wvw community. Hell of a lot less culling issues. Less lag (tho SM lords room fights still suck, thanks anet for never fixing anything in wvw).

Well you can’t blame A-Net for when your guild picks a full server, it’s one of the risks when you chose to go to that server.
This system is much better than to have wait outside with hour long queues just to get in the game. I say no thank you to that.
They COULD put in queue for transferring to full servers, then again it helps people going for full servers instead of joining the low population ones and goes against what A-Net is trying to do.

From day one Anet has said transfers will cost. They had other things on their plate so the paid transfer setup was delayed. So yea, I guess you could say Anet is enabling transfers.

I see WvW as a resource capture and hold game, this is almost impossible in most tiers due to one-sided fights. One server has AU prime time cover and the other two don’t.
Makes the game very boring, when it could be so much more. 1v1 doesn’t interest me, its securing objectives as a group/server and holding them.
Maybe my understand of WvW is wrong and really it’s just a PvP arena, nothing more.

MMOs age in dog years. They age faster than dogs, really.. many may live 6-10 years, but the last three quarters of their span is usually a grey emptiness of few players and apathetic, inactive devs.
I have no quarrel with transfers costing $$, it’s a reasonable value-add to charge for and discourages server hopping antics. Per ArenaNet’s post on the coming changes, they will not be enabling transfer to ‘Full’ servers.
There are few to no queues on the T1 servers, all of which show up as ‘Full’. The WvW maps aren’t even being filled outside of Friday nights. There is no issue of WvW being overburdened, or quality of play lessened, in T1 WvW matches. Judging by what I’m hearing and reading, the current match is the best in weeks. The other servers are already thinned out and lack the large scale combat that is unique to WvW in GW2. Why is ANet supposed to be worried about this happening — it’s already happened, and it was inevitable from the start.

Not at the moment no, but if so many WvW guilds from all tiers transfer to the same few servers you’ll have servers full of of WvW committed players. So after the transfers are done there will likely be massive queues, simmilar to at launch which means you won’t even be able to play with your guild because everybody’s queues pop at different times.
There is a reason the servers is full, have you ever asked your guild to consider a less popular servers i can recommend some with great communities and would appreciate your guild much more ie Blackgate, Tarnished Coast, Dragonbrand, Crystal Desert, Maguuma and Kaineng all of which can arrange times when they aren’t full and have a very competitive WvW enviroment. it seems like at the moment Jade Quarry is a victim of its own success where even Sea of Sorrows is able to put the server at very high status more effeciently then jade quarry.

That list isn’t really accurate many of those servers often jump from full to very high, plus i don’t know what anet are doing but darkhaven full? come on.
out of those servers the only ones who are full worthy are SoS,JQ,Tarnished coast, SoR and blackgate(maybe). And what you would notice is many of those servers will often jump from very high to full but trying to get into any of the full worthy servers will be a pain in the behind.
