Let me begin by saying that I’m not looking to blame anybody, developers or players. I’m confident that the WXP system was added with the best of intentions, and that players are not at fault for wanting to play optimally, as that is one of the driving compulsions of MMOs.

There have been some steady changes in how WvW is played over the last year, and the biggest of these is the introduction of WXP and the change to server match-ups, and soon Bloodlust and Season One. I’m not going to declare that everything was perfect before these changes came into effect, but the way people play WvW now has changed on a fundamental level.

Before WXP was introduced, player actions were generally aimed at setting their server up to win the week and gain ranking points. Many players were reasonably happy to escort Dolyaks, siege up keeps and start upgrades, possibly stay in them for scouting. There were certainly some players who preferred flipping objectives for quick karma gain, but the majority of players, even if they didn’t always play like this, would do so now and again.

When WXP was introduced, it originally favoured large numbers of player kills, and we saw, within a week, a shift towards very large groups of players on servers that had previously been happy playing in smaller groups. Likewise, when the WXP for taking objectives was doubled, the shift to flipping objectives was almost immediately visible. By the time the most recent adjustments came in, the mentality had set:

Leave upgrades and sieging to other people, because that’s time you won’t be getting WXP. Defending can get you some WXP if you show up at the right time and fight the enemy zerg, but mostly from killing enemies rather than from completing the Defence event. Staying inside towers is WXP lost. Please don’t roam solo because you’ll be denying the WXP train if you take a camp or a sentry before they get there. Friday is reset day, and that means don’t worry about defending anything, just flip, flip, flip.

And so on.

Again, I’m not blaming players for this attitude; it’s simply the result of the system that’s currently in place. My problem with this system is that it’s creating a conflict between the short-term reward of WXP – which everybody wants to get, as quickly as possible – and the long-term ‘reward’ of server position and points, that sieging up and holding objectives provides.

While I’m sure there are many players who will be enthused by Season One, I think for many servers, especially those who on basis of match-up history are unlikely to come in first place, are unlikely to find it the necessary stimulus to return to doing all these WXP-inefficient things that made WvW what it was. So long as they complete the Seasonal achievements, they’re going to be happy.

So what I’m saying, and what I’d really like to see the WvW team focusing on once this next WvW release is out, is trying to work out ways to synergise the WXP system, and defending, to incentivise players to actually start doing all these things that defined WvW for the first half a year.

Running around trying to find a paper walled tower to break into, or playing musical chairs with Hills and Bay are fantastic for WXP, but they’re definitely beginning to bore me, and from map chat, others feel much the same way. It’s demoralising to have to ask players to siege up, and get no response because they are – again, quite reasonably – more interested in the next objective.

For those who managed to get through all of that, thanks for reading, and I welcome discussion and differences of opinion. I hope this topic helps the WvW developers see what some players’ opinions are on this.

WXP is just more grind (referred to by Anet as “progression”) added to the game to make your character more powerful, and when you do that players will, yeah you guessed it, grind. Anet has a stagnating game and their additions so far to keep it interesting have shown about as much creativity as a cardboard box. So far they’ve added more gear grind, wxp grind, more crafting grind, magic find grind, achievement point grind, laurel grind, and probably some other stuff I’m forgetting. I mean, if they wanted to revamp the borderlands map they could have added something like a massive jumping puzzle-esque tower in the middle with a flag at the top, and the team that successfully gets to the top, captures the flag, and brings it back to their spawn gets something like 500 points. Would involve interesting strategies, doesn’t favor zergs since a 50 man zerg would most certainly fail at a jumping puzzle, and with 500 points a cap it could change the gameplay dynamic a lot. Instead their revamp meetings go something like this:

Bob: “Team, we need to do something on the borderlands map to make it more fun.”
Jim: “Hmm, oh! How about… we add more cap and hold circles!”
Bob: “That’s very good Jim, but we already have a lot of those.”
Jim: “How about… cap and hold circles… without walls!”
Bob: “Genius!”

wxp shouldn’t be that important but we need more action and fights in wvw.
ramming tower gates all day long just to get the server in a better place really bore many players.
better and successful fights, more kills should lead a server to top of the ladder instead of night capping towers and keeps. current system just tells you not to fight, tells you to just run between objectives to cap/defend.(you may get some action if there’s enemies) well, like other mmorpgs pk fights and fun needs to be on top of the list.
not many ppl want to choose boring pvd game style. pvp fights are always more enjoyable. so i mean sieges/castles needs to have less importance and there should be more pvp action. 85% of the time you spend in wvw is just walking and pvd.

I don’t have an issue with a server, commander, or guild that doesn’t want to upgrade, defend or even siege up a point simply because seconds after reset when you see who your opponents are, everyone on my server knows who is going to win (I’m not on one of the top 3 servers). If we’re in a match with two servers above us we’ll finish a distant third. If it’s one server above and one below we’ll finish a distant second. If it’s two servers below we’ll finish first.

If we face a server above us I know that:
When I Iog on a few hours before my server’s prime time we will be lucky to have anything in EB or even our own Garrison. The higher server will have T3 keeps/towers and might even have our keep in EB at T3, possibly our own Garrison. If we happen to take back one of our keeps I know that the higher pop server will take it back before we can get our first upgrade done. This goes on for 2-4 hours until our primetime hits. It takes our outmanned crew 5 times longer to cap our own T1 towers than the higher pop server. The only real issue is whether they will let us retake our own towers or wait until we’ve almost got the gate down and wipe everyone and repair the gate to 100%.

If we face two servers below us I know that:
When I log in our BL is our color, EB is mostly our color and the BL of the lowest pop server is mostly our color. The BL of the second server is half our color. I run through the maps looking for someone to fight and there isn’t anyone there, even though it’s one of our weaker coverage times. If one of the other servers take one of their towers back we’ll be quickly there to take it back and farm some easy WxP.

My server doesn’t play for PPT or WxP, we play for fights. It’s more fun and less stressful and less chance of burnout.

The more gates that are paper, the more fights you can get. Just take your zerg and chase their zerg. Unless you’d rather sit there and treb upgraded keeps full of ACs? I wouldn’t. You can get tons of kills by just waiting around a corner and ambushing all the people pvdooring.
