Anet, Make enemy Nameplate less visible.
In what way would that benefit everyone? Roaming doesn’t really do much for your server, especially if you really just go for random 1v1 (without defending camps etc.). I also fail to see why it would benefit everyone if counterplay to scouting was made harder.
For 1v1, just go for obsidian, where people actually build for dueling and fights are enjoyable (what fun lies in farming pvt-zerglings?)
I agree with OP… I would like to be able to use my dye as camouflage but there is no point if you got a big red sign above your head.
I also disagree strongly with Marauder… I solo roam quite a bit and can cap a camp in under 4mins… one night last week, I was the only player on SFR for 2 hours preventing Deso from ticking 100% – done by jumping borderlands and capping random camps. There are often times I am the only person capping camps. I also give scout reports, kill other roamers I see capping camps, take out strays on zerg tails, hide inside keeps that are about to be taken and provide portals for quick retakes etc. etc. I play an important role for my server.

even if there were no nameplates your dye wouldn’t matter because of the team color option
Ah yes, the nameplates.
Remember back when we all started WvW; zergs would hide behind a large rock thinking the enemy could not see them, and they were right, you couldnt see them but you could see their mile long nameplate
Things have already been suggested to the devs, but we’re still waiting for updates….
Nameplates should be obscured when the player is behind an object. It is difficult to “surprise” another player since the nameplate almost always shows through or around even large structures.
They should also not show until players are within attack range of each other. It is really difficult to sneak up on another player since they can see the nameplate coming from a mile away.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
I agree on this. Nameplates are waaay to big on distance. Make it a name at 0-2000 range and icon after 2000 range.
What i also hate is zerg vs zerg.. Full screen of red names makes me hate zerging. You dont even see players because your screen is FULL of names because of pets turrets clones etc etc

Yes, you contribute to the success of your server – but none of the above requires an invisible name tag. Invisible name tags are for players that want to instagibb unaware players and lack the skill to deal with retaliation.
I get that some people like the “ninja” feel of roaming but this game isn’t all about you. We have to see it from the other player’s perspective: you get insta-downed without even realizing what hit you, where is the fun in that? Nametags allow roamers to meet on equal levels and make fights fair (and give weaker players a chance to run from me). People who cannot deal with that might have more fun farming upleveled.

there is nothing fair about meeting a warrior on equal terms when you play a squishy class. The warrior can kill you in 4-kittens, while you got to really work for your kill in wearing them down with conditions and hoping their food is not as effective as your ability to keep the conditions coming. Even taking them by surprise is touch and go.

This I agree with, though it should use a general hitbox – which should be the same for all races – to determine if someone can see the tag. Sneaking without stealth has it’s charms I think.

I only have trouble with condi bunkers, the rest feels rather fair and it depends on skill whether I lose or win. The warr might be OP atm but I don’t think it is a viable solution to give other classes better instagib potential. Warrs would cry because of uncounterable gameplay and others would still cry because warrs are still too strong in open fights. Sure, winning/losing would be better distributed but not because of fair and enjoyable fights.
Would be pretty cool Would open the door for slightly more tactical and sneaky play, something which doesnt really exist in this game at the moment.
@Marauders
To be honest even without name tags any half decent player will notice someone coming up to “insta-gib” them. Removing the name tag doesnt make you invisible, it just stops you have a huge red banner over your head which can be seen 2 miles off round the corner. And besides, WvW is not a fair 1v1 arena, it’s there for people to do what they want and come up with tactics and plans to achieve their goals their own way. Fewer obsticals to people being able to do that is a good thing.

For quite some time, I’ve rolled a warrior as my main. I’ve rolled mace/shield & bow, axe/shield & bow, mace/sword & bow, and the same main combo w/ greatsword alt. I’ve ran zerker, soldier, and mixed armor setups.
I also solo cap camps, and have done so with every armor/weapon combo. In every iteration, I have had thieves come from behind and down me 2-3 hits. It doesn’t always happen… sometimes I can hit tab enough to get the slippery little devils, but any decent thief can come from behind a warrior (while the warrior is distracted) and down the warrior pretty quickly. I’ve also had mesmers, necros, and one very persistent engineer take me, but the fights were much more extended (they don’t get a boost for sneaking up on me).
I like reducing the nameplate size, but changing the nameplate size won’t change play mechanics. Thieves sneak up from behind while someone is distracted and get a giant boost. Everyone else comes from behind to gain initiative.
