The reason Blackgate is so great is because of the guilds that started on Blackgate. All of the guilds jumping to Blackgate have no idea what WvW is all about.
No, Blackgate was T3 material, with a tiny chance at T2, until a ton of guilds transferred over around a month ago. Not dissing the fact the transfers happened – just making sure the facts remain part of history.
I have seen this firsthand with Aspenwood. Once the Euro and big guilds get bored, the noobies come out. The ones that play on aspenwood because they got stomped elsewhere. Yesterday I soloed 5 aspenwoods. Yes, they were all upscaled and wearing armor that a character lower than 60 would wear. These people exist everywhere sure, but what really put me back was that this was right in front of my spawn in EB. .
I’d rephrase this too. Once the point divergence is over 100k – the alts come out.
Last words – “I’m going to jump off this cliff
and pull all those guys down cuz they’ll die.”
Can’t say that I disagree with most of your opinions. I despise these guilds and entire alliances that forsake their servers and ruin WvW balance just for an opportunity to be “the best”.. but isn’t it a little late to be posting this? Bandwagoning has been happening for months, and the constant server transferring has actually died down in recent weeks.. Most tiers are having decent matches now. Plus the separation between high tier servers and low tier servers is -already- insurmountable.
WvW is all about server pride. If you’re thinking about transferring to a “better world”, don’t. Have some respect for your home server and help to build the community.

Long queues? I haven’t had a single queue on any map for at least the past 4 weeks, except for about a 4 hour window immediately following the reset on Fridays. Even then, the queue for EB was 30 mins or less. I’m not trying to ding your decision to move servers, but don’t say it was because of queues. There aren’t any.

Thanks for making this thread, Kita. I completely agree.
I despise all those bandwagon fairweather guilds that change server the moment things aren’t going well. Many servers have been ruined and turned into ghost towns because of this. We can only hope Arenanet does something about this soon (get rid of free server transfers) but that seems unlikely…
Kita you’re either delusional or have no idea what’s going on with your server because Blackgate was middle of the pack until a bunch of guilds jumped from their previous servers to yours.
The truth is Blackgate isn’t that great as you put it but had more people doing what other servers where doing. That doesn’t make Blackgate bad, good or great it makes them lucky that others wanted to go there.
Nice try but people know the way it really is no matter how you attempt to spin it.

Did you even look at Kita’s signature? He plays on Darkhaven. This rant and his mention of Blackgate was probably prompted by a WvW guild that transferred from DH to BG this week.
Also, for the record, BG had climbed to the #6 spot in the rankings, and played in a T2 match with SBI and IoJ the week starting on 10/12, which was BEFORE any of the transfers in from HoD and ET.

Why doesn’t ArenaNet just make it so that if you transfer servers, you can’t do WvW on that server until the match resets? Wouldn’t that work, or am I missing something?

They were 10k behind 2nd place in that matchup. And of course SBI beat IOJ and BG by that much, that happened everytime a server dropped from T1 down to T2 in those days. Do you even follow WvW?
Beast mode
You caught me. I don’t follow WvW. I don’t know that BG had a very close match with DB and FA in T3 at the end of September. Started getting transfers, got annihilated in T2, dropped to T3. IoJ, the T2 server, did not drop to T3. Back on track, BG got more transfers and mowed through T3.
As I said, T3 with a tiny potential for T2. IoJ was/is T2.

Maybe we have differing opinions on what “middle of the pack” means.

And now we are T2 with a potential for T1 (and stayed there for 3 weeks). Where is your server at?

Blackgate has some great guilds, but one of the guilds that helped make it quit the game because it was too casual (pre-patch). The others simply are experiencing the queues.
It’s okay, because since WM can be 24/7 around the clock and JQ decides they can’t win but don’t want to be kicked out of T1 they’ve decided to double team Blackgate.
All the bandwagons that went to Blackgate when they saw us absolutely DESTROYING ET and HoD already left to SBI or JQ. We’ve seen some of our former, weaker guilds with red names these past 3 weeks.
I agree that bandwagoners are just lame, but… in a sense, you sometimes need it.
Blackgate wasn’t T1 before the transfers of guilds like Thai and HB because we simply didn’t have around the clock coverage. With RQ quitting and Urge experiencing the issue they had that I won’t get into because it’s no ones business, we suffered time slot issues.
So, at the start of the week we’d be right there with the other teams, or in the lead. Then reality hits us in which we can’t be on GW2 and then we lose a lot of points and next time we log in it’s an up hill climb. Hardly ever do the original Blackgate guilds lose points when they’re on and playing together. It wasn’t bandwagoners that put us in T1. It’s the guilds that know how to WvW that had time slot issues on their original servers.
On a side note, IoJ and Blackgate are fighting this week. If you want to start talking trash, meet us on the Battlefield in 40 minutes.

Yes, this. One big guild, I won’t say which, left Darkhaven. They were always talking about alliances and stuff to improve Darkhaven. Then out of the blue they stab us in the back for an already-established server.
I use Blackgate merely as an example. Okay, so it wasn’t Tier 1 quality originally. That I didn’t know. However, once it became Tier 1 then this rant takes place.
I like these Darkhaven guys. On the one hand, they complain about zergs. On the other hand, they brag about killing zergs. They’re a contradiction wrapped in an angry, whiny shell.
I’m not bragging about killing 5 newbies wearing what I presume was blue quality armor. I’m just making a point.

However, guilds moving servers took WvW from 1 close tier, to multiple tiers with close matches in them.

Have you seen our current matchup? The system believes that Aspenwood is a smidge better than Darkhaven. Having a… what, 300k point lead, is NOT a “smidge” better. Its the equivalent of pairing a hardcore pro gamer up against a casual 12 year old girl that plays Kirby because he’s pink. There is this massive ravine in any Tier 4 matchup. The top 10 servers are significantly superior to the other servers. Its like two different WvW setups.

Yes some of us in DH dont like zergs. Zergs make people stupid, no need for any abstract thinking, just rolling around face rolling the keyboard collecting coin and karma.
Using small team tactics, terrain features, cover and concealment, organized supply lines and effective communication is what we are trying to teach our PUG’s.
But holding a tower in Eb for 7 hours on Friday night against 6-7 large FA/HoD (40+) zergs with 2-8 people at a time is nice too.
Nice story.

You realize at the start there was only 1 tier which held slighty close matches, and others were mainly 1 server dominate.
Now you have multiple tiers holding closer matches
1-2 Matches doesn’t mean all of them.

Yes Blackgate got it’s huge influx of guilds during it’s matchup with Dragonbrand. the following week the rest of the guilds that left dragon brand went to SoS. simple as that.

blackgate went from middle tier to high tier when a couple of euro guilds joined to help with night capping and defending.
Server transfers are killing WvW. After two weeks of being hammered by Tarnished Coast zergs, I was hoping Crystal Desert could have some actual fun. But barely one night in, and it feels hopeless. It’s no fun being in one of the only guilds left on the server that does organized WvW. All because the sore losers can just wander on over to a winning realm every week.
It’s been long enough for people to get to the same server as their friends. Kill the free transfers NOW.

Whilst I agree that bandwagoners are evil(ones that just hop from winner to winner etc), people that transfer themselves may not be, one time transfers I like, WvW badly needs transfers to get semi even matches, otherwise population imbalance just screws everything up. Once a server has the population spread to cover all the major timezones, then its good, once we get multiple servers with those, we start to get good matches.
T1/T2 in NA are close to balancing, coverage still has issues but not as large as lower tiers where one oceanic team or euro team can just facesmash, and from what i see on the other tiers they are at least giving good fights now that most of the servers with wider than na coverage are up in the top
Sea of Sorrows
Just make server transfers cost money. Problem solved in some cases, and for the people that will suck it up and still server hop like an std in college are at least giving ANet more funding. Win/Win.
From someone that started on YB and will stay on YB until it’s dead (IF that ever happens hypothetically). I came into the game thinking WvW was about fighting with your server-mates for your server. Win, lose or draw.
Yaks Bend
Server hoppers are human beings. Players trying to enjoy playing a game. Who are we to tell them what they should do or not ? In the name of what ? Loyalty to a name and a bunch of people they do not even know ?
SBI since BWE. SBI till they shut down the server (or I get too bored to play). 0 server transfers in my history. On SBI we had a massive influx of WvW interested server hoppers. Some came when we were crushed by HoD, some only recently. Some turned out great companions – some give us headaches. I know for sure that some of the old timers on the server are annoyed by the randomness of our WvW population at times. But we have no ownership over the server – it belongs to them now too, till they transfer elsewhere at least. So we let them be – try to convert them to the Light when we can. Do our thing – log on and try to win, ignore the points.
Players that change servers to get a more pleasant gaming experience have the right to do it. Unless, of course, they are purposely trying to grief others, which is not ok in any context.
There doesn’t have to be a rift between native guilds and transferring guilds.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have done it. Today, Sea of Sorrows has finally reached Tier 1 in WvW Rankings.
Being in the server’s first WvW focused guild, I have had the privilege to watch our server rise from the biggest joke in the WvW scene to where we stand now. Our rise in the past few weeks was swift, but I want to remind everyone of all the painstaking setbacks we had to endure to get here.
August 25th, Sea of Sorrows was born. It was the unofficial home to Oceanics. Almost immediately we were labeled a care-bear PVE Server with no competitiveness in WvW. Our only advantage was that we were dirty night cappers who were amazing at PvDooring ghost towns.
But we fight on.
September 17th, guilds from another server wiped us out in WvW and spawn camped us for 5 days in a row. They entered our server and convinced many that SoS was a lost cause in WvW and the only way to succeed was to leave, and many did.
But we fight on.
October 1st, another 2 weeks of losing disheartened many WvW players on our server. Several WvW guilds and key commanders left our server to find an easier time elsewhere. The outlook of our server was at its grimmest.
But we fight on.
October 10th For the we barely held our ground in tier 5 rankings, our first WvW Oceanic-USA Alliance broke down and the few USA WvW guilds we had left our server. Even Oceanic guild leaders received server transfer invitations left and right, it seemed the SOS goal of WvW success was forever a dream.
But we fight on.
October 20th A major turning point. Major guild alliances disband across servers. Major hardcore USA time zone guilds began to move into Sea of Sorrows seeing the potential of having more Oceanic partners. They came, and they promised to stay.
We fight on.
October 29th Playing into our rising momentum, we begin recruitment efforts of European guilds to join SOS. Although it is still a work in progress, the number of European time zone players continues to rise to this day. Everyday our numbers swell, more and more WvW veterans join our call to battle from all over the world.
We fight strong.
And here we are, today. November 16th 2012 will mark the day when Sea of Sorrows officially enters into Tier 1 WvW Matchup. We don’t know if we are ready, most likely it will be an uphill struggle to the bitter end.
But it is in the uphill struggle where we thrive. This is where to will be conditioned through the bloodiest of battles.
I am proud of every single Sea of Sorrowrian who has stepped up over the last 80 days and pulled our server together. Together, we have proven that not a single minute of our time was wasted. Not a single piece of gold was ill spent. No matter how many times we wipe, we will keep smashing our tired bodies against the gates of our enemies. I also want to thank the guilds who have transferred to SOS. Thank you for training us and putting up with our lack of experience and discipline, we swear to continue improving, as a server together.
Tomorrow will be a challenging day. It just so happens that SoS’s ascension into Tier One falls onto the day of the Lost Shore major patch. The lure of the evil PVE is great, but we will hold the line regardless. Remember that your gear or shiney new toys is just a passing phase and any benefits will be wiped out within a week, but stepping up to tier 1 the day we rise is an event forever marked in your legacy. We need you to hold the line.
Sea of Sorrows. Make history today.

Don’t completely omit the fact that there was NO WAY to properly match up servers at launch. It takes a while for servers to be matched properly. Server transfers disrupt the systems ability to properly match up servers. If there weren’t server transfers yes it could be rough in the beginning, because you can not possibly match up servers correctly with limited or no data at all on how the servers would do against one another. However, after long enough this issue should be corrected.
When you throw in large transfers into the mix that’s another drastically different variable that in many cases will not allow for correction. Especially when it changes so erratically. The reason the higher servers match up decently is because their population and performance has been allowed to stabilize for the most part. This allows for better match ups to occur in those tiers.
It takes time for the match ups to become optimum. If you allow for continued transfers though some match ups will indefinitely turn out bad. The game has been out for coming on 3 months now and transfers have been around that whole time. One can not factually state based on any evidence that there would have been more mismatches without transfers. It has not had a chance to even be tested properly.

That’s not people transferring that’s your problem. That’s your server overwhelmingly not being interested in WvW.
Even so, I don’t see how you can feel you have the right to tell anyone what server they can play on. People transferring aren’t transferring to negatively affect you, they’re doing it to help themselves. They’re independent of you. You on the other hand, are desperately dependent on them and want to force them to do what they don’t want to do. You’re basically advocating the concepts of slavery and looting.

Day #2 Blackgate player here. (No, I didnt get the game on day #1)
I picked Blackgate cuz I called one of my friends who got the game and asked what server he played on. Safe to say, I’m not a bandwagon player.
Let me give OP the proper Blackgate story. We had potential because we had a very strong NA presence, but basically no EU or Oceanic presence. So we tried to recruit a few guilds to help out with the times we didn’t have the best coverage. As luck would have it, we got the guilds we needed. We had a fun fight against TC and FA. We won, and earned the nickname “Beastgate” because of our coverage and ferocious offense. Also because we had a habit of rolling in a zerg made up of every player in WvW at that given time. We moved up a tier and spent the next 2 weeks fighting against 2 servers that were dead. I think the second week we had over 600,000 points. But… because there was nothing to do, people started to leave.
We move up to T1. The very first day of the match, a player from our server “hacked” an orb. Forum drama ensued. We were in first place for the weekend. Then SBI’s oceanic force showed up and capped every point on every map overnight. Between the forum drama and the simple demoralization that happens when you lose everything you had, one of our big guilds left. We finished the week in 2nd place.
The next week, the same drama continued, and our server was getting sick of being labeled as a server of hackers because of a single incident involving a single person. Or a server of exploiters because the T1 guilds believe it or not, had never seen a group use a mesmer portal before. >.> Anyway, midway thru the week, a large group of our oceanic population left for SBI because that is where most of their friends played. And thats around the time the rest of our bandwagon guilds left, and a lot of players just got tired of fighting the same 2 servers for 3 weeks. We finished the last 2 matches in 3rd place and now we’re in T2.
But dont act for one minute like Blackgate is a dead or dying server. Ask SBI or JQ. We may lack 24/7 coverage now, but we can still hang with the best. We have great commanders and great PVPers overall. We still have some of the best WvW guilds in all of GW2.

First of all, I understand your grief on server loyalty, I do but in this game, you form a stronger bond with your guild then your server. You know, the people you are talking to every day on mumble/vent, going on raids and pwning noobs with, the people that become your friends.
If you can’t have fun in WvW with your guild because the rest of the server is getting steamrolled, is disorganized, full of QQ’ers, or just more PvE oriented then what’s wrong with leaving for greener pastures?
I don’t condone people that constantly jump servers, but the point of the game is to have fun, and if leaving a server to improve your gaming experience is necessary, I don’t see the problem with that. Maybe you should take a look in the mirror and look at WHY they left, I’m going to assume these are the reasons. In which case, only people at fault are yourselves for not helping provide a fun, engaging WvW experience.
Posts like this just reek of jealousy.
It’s OK if I switch companies for a better paying job, all your friends will congratulate you on landing that well deserved position at a Fortune 500 company. But it’s not OK if I do the same in GW2 WvW.
Don’t worry Dragonbrand had it happen we lost most of our bigger WvW guilds to SoS. You just move on and learn to play with out them sure it will be rough but eventually you get to a tier you can compete on. Which we obviously are one too high as 7 hours in we are down 15kish
Why doesn’t ArenaNet just make it so that if you transfer servers, you can’t do WvW on that server until the match resets? Wouldn’t that work, or am I missing something?
Believe it or not- Wv3 is just collateral damage.
Gold Sellers (who have almost no interest in Wv3) use the free transfers to move their bots around to avoid too much attention.
And then there’s the ‘Guesting’ practice that Anet promised folks from beta where guilds could be on many servers at once. That’s how it was intended and then you could ‘visit’ another realm and play with your friends or guild mates. However that has never taken off. Anet’s failure to produce is also what is keeping the free transfers alive.
(edited by Dhar.6392)
There is also a weird practice of some guilds hopping to low tier servers from high tier servers.
Fine overall, but when they transfer back into the tier when the server ranks out, something is awkward.
