You see all these nice posts about “close community”, “great place to be”, “join us in our efforts”. Tons of sugarcoating for a simple message:

“We win in WvW by outnumbering the opponent. Join us so our advantage gets even bigger.”

SoS is recruiting. Really? The No1 server that has won all matchups in the last 2 months bar one (and usually without much trouble). What are you trying to achieve? Build HoD 2.0? We already had a completely broken T1 competition before, it was fun for neither side.

Kaineng recruiting while they 600+ curbstomp their opponents? Really? Are those doors too vicious for you to handle? Need more help with them?

Now, it would be bearable if people were actually honest and straight out admitted that they are in for the win, and will do whatever it takes (fun side note: The servers that get bandwagooned to by people who value the win most, also have the highest numbers of hackers on their sides. Remember BG when they first went up to T1 …).

However, all the sugary “community” sales pitch sounds exactly like that: The attempt by some win-hungry players to dress their selfishness into words that will attract others to ensure their own easy victory without having to fight.

I hope you all get what you deserve: Months and months of unbalanced and boring WvW.

Some servers are just trying to plug outright gaping coverage gaps, others want to stomp more because they realized stomping is more fun than being stomped. Can’t really blame any of them.

To be honest Yak’s Bend has 4 recruitment posts going that i have seen in the last 3 days.

Doesn’t bother me at all. Nobody logs in and set’s their sights on losing. Winning will always be an underlying factor to recruitment. I see people looking for more as dedication than simply about more numbers.

The above poster makes great sense too. Their are tiers for a reason, I hope the transfers help spread more of the population more evenly across the servers.

A well matched tier is more important than moving up to a higher tier, imo. Everyones recruiting more than usual right now due to the ending of free transfers on the 28th.

The recruiting doesn’t bother since I have map chat disabled 95% of the time.

I would be curios to know how effective recruitment posts are in the first place. How many people do you think log in to the WvW forum who are looking for a new server, and who among them would actually believe that Server X’s community is more fun than any other server’s because they see a post saying it is.

Yes I am absolutely appalled by any recruitment thread which does not belong to my own server!

All of GW2’s PvP modes involve zerging and outright outnumbering your way to victory. Why does this surprise anyone? Skillful fights can only be found in those small scale battles 1v1/2v2. Anymore than that and you have the ability to quickly kill one of the opposing side to make your numbers advantage.

I have found these sorts of people in every game I’ve ever played. It’s unfortunate but it just seems to be part of human nature manifesting itself in a virtual world.

You say “…all the recruitment threads” but then focus on SoS? So you are just appalled by SoS recruiting, or am I reading this wrong?

I was thinking about making my own thread this morning, actually, that was pretty much exactly this.
The server recruiting is getting stupid, I hope it slows down with paid transfers.

Some of the threads I’ve read recruiting for servers (I’m not gonna name anyone specifically, or any servers) were so full of arrogance and dripping with self gratification that they were far more offputting than attractive.

People don’t realize it just takes one kitten on the forums to make your whole server look like jerks.

Conversely, some server recruiting threads have been pretty respectful and well written. But I think we’re past the time, with paid transfers announced, where you can recruit for your server without looking like you’re just grabbing at bandwagoners for easy wins.

I, for one, only try to advocate for transferring to Dragonbrand when people PM me privately to ask questions because they’re already thinking about it.

You may have overlooked the root problem of total PvP population, with attrition. There’s only enough for maybe 4-6 servers for this type of play format.

So with that in mind it’s perfectly proper for every server even if they are #1 to continue to recruit.

On another note since the participation is low relative to the PvE population and attrition level is high, the current format is not sustainable in the long run.

I agree that recruitment posts are universally silly.

Each matchup is a 3-way. Odds are your server is going to lose 2 matches out of every 3. Running to the forums every time your sever placed 2nd or 3rd is silly and mostly just means you’ll destabilize your server and roflstomp a week or two before getting your next inevitable beatdown, at which time all the grass-is-greener types who joined you will now go somewhere else.

And is upper tier combat BETTER? How so? Even bigger zergs? Even more queues? Even more culling issues?

Maguuma has the right idea. Anti-recruiting. Stop the population flux. Settle in and enjoy the fight.

Have I mentioned what a terrible server Ehmry Bay is? It’s full of cannibals and awful people who are very mean all the time for no reason. We call it “Bully Bay”, but we only bully ourselves and we always /spit on newcomers. Not in game. In real life. We only build rams for siege and we never put them on doors and we play nothing except staff guardians and “fist/fist” thieves. It’s just awful.

I sympathize. Recruiting from other servers is a zero sum game that comes at their expense. I’d place the fault on ANet rather than the recruiters though for designing WvW to be a numbers game. We’re not going to play sub-optimally just because some people don’t like it.

Not everybody is in it strictly for the win. We’re looking to have fun. While winning is fun, so is camaraderie and finding a group of people that you like to share your hobby.

It is a combination. Everybody wants to win. Otherwise, why would they play? But if you can’t win every time , at least you can have fun doing it.

Also, I think most of us know that numbers do not always mean victory. However, attracting as wide a player base as possible makes for more diversity. That diversity means that our commanders don’t have to be up all night fighting off Oceanic servers. Being able to grab a full night of sleep during flu season is not being “win-hungry”, it’s just smart leadership, and a good long-term strategy.

Considering the doors to widespread recruiting will be closeing in a week and a half its not unexpected. Yes some servers may not NEED more right now but haveing a buffer for the future cant hurt and it will be much harder to recruit later on when your looking at 20 bucks or 30 gold a head for transfers to high pop servers. Its a situation of “If we dont recruit then someone else will” and recruits going anywhere else is only more power in the hands of potential enemies. Who wouldn’t recruit in that situation? Show me that man and I’ll show you someone on the loosing team.

I wish there was a “Dunes of Despair” server, Crystal Desert was always my favorite place in GW1, and that mission name just sounds so kitten.

Just call a new server, “The Winning Server” and fairweather guilds from all tiers will go there, leaving the rest of us to get on with good fights
