Q:
Are Badges of Honour only received for kills?
From what I’ve experienced, dealing around 1-2k damage to a player is usually enough, probaby on a 10% of target health as a basis. As long as you hit them and I think if they don’t go outside of combat you qualify for the loot. Not much experience with support abilities, but it was stated that they made it easier to get credit for using these.
I ask because I’d like to do a build focused on aoe auras and healing to sustain the zerg. However I don’t think I’m going to bother if it will substantially harm my ability to get badges…
The boss and jp chests on wvw maps contain them as well.
Currently the best way to get them is zerg vs zerg fights with an AoE Char, e.g. Nero or Ele. 50 per hour is a quite common result.

Might as well test it for a bit then.
It works the same way tagging does in PvE you need to do x amount of dmg to the target or apply a boon to your allies that does dmg to the target EX: Ranger Fire Spirit
Badges of Honor can also Be looted from the chest in the eternal battleground or the 3 borderlands

Not sure what was supposed to be changed, but I ran water support on my ele last night trying to take garr, and I got 1 badge for a veteran guard I hit with a fire spell. All my other healing, and boosting got me nothing. It seems if you do not damage the enemy, you are doing a great service for your team, but you will not be rewarded with anything but praise from comrades.

It doesn’t make much difference. I play AoE classes like Necros and they are comparable in badges to what you get as a single direct damage char like a thief.
Badges sometimes drop off camp supervisors and tower/keep lords. I think you need to be one of the top damage dealers to get them. If you solo a camp then you can get badges about half the time.
I have never ever seen a badge drop off a normal (veteran) guard, and I’ve killed a truckload of those solo.
AOE classes seem to get more badges in Zerg fights in my experience, probably because they end up tagging more opponents. You can kill a player solo and not get any badges, but you can hit five players with AOE and end up with bags full of badges when your Zerg rolls over them.
Finishing a player with a stomp (rather than normal damage) also seems to increase badge drop rate, in my experience, but that could be just luck or my imagination.

Your healing skills have cooldowns. Damage people while waiting for those cooldowns and you’ll be fine.

This. With the recent changes in how you get credit for loot, hitting a player with one aoe spell is usually enough to get loot. Also watch chat for when your mesmers are porting people in the EB jumping puzzle, that’s a quick chest of badges and loot.
