Mesmer Commander “The Lord Knows”

Speculation? Dev hints in 3rd party gaming news?
I’m saving my badges, every single one ever dropped, in the hopes that I’ll have a set of ascended gear waiting for me on the day it is released
What do you all think?
Probably will have little to nothing to do with the old badges if they even do it.
Ultimately I think they have no choice, if they want to stay true to their philosophy that you don’t have to PvE to get the best gear.
I kinda hope it’s not badges, because badges are already useful for buying siege. I wouldn’t mind seeing a karma vendor though. I have tons of karma obtained through WvW and nothing further to spend it on.
The badges are sort of a weird concept anyways. Instead of rewarding you for completing WvW objectives, it rewards you for doing anything else that has nothing to do with the war…
(Except if you play a high dps aoe build in zergs)
Technically, you don’t need to be high DPS AoE in a zerg, just AoE. The difference in ability to farm badges between me in my role and some of the ranged AoE-based classes is, at this point, probably in the thousands.
So I also hope they don’t use badges as the currency, though I won’t care all that much if I don’t land any Ascended gear.
It should not be difficul to bring Ascended gear to WvW, no matter what currency they decide on. There are more than enough vendors on the WvW maps for Ascended items to be added. The coding would be trivial.
The fact that this hasn’t happened yet tells us that Anet has no desire for this to happen.

Badges were made for melee classes. If your range classes you get little to none. Badges shouldn’t be used for ascended gear nope. Keep it with pve focus since its pve focused and has absolutely nothing and mean nothing to do with wvw. Just like Badges of honor shouldn’t have any association with legendaries sinces it pve weapon not pvp.

Wrong…. im noticed quite the contrary.
I just need to stay back and and hit the max people radomly, then grab the bags.

I get plenty of badges on my Mesmer, more than enough to support our guild with siege and I have 500 put away.

The exact opposite of this actually. You couldn’t have been more wrong.

Actually, badges currently drop for dps classes. If you’re a support class (you know, the ones that actually help the team as a whole) you get none.
Combined with the random drop chance the entire badges system is broken and needs to be changed in my opinion. Maybe apply badges to the objective reward?
Coming soon to a WvW vendor near you! Ascended pieces, only 5000 badges per!

Dev being led away in handcuffs says, “darn those meddling kids, and I would have got away with it too…”
I can see this being easily implemented using the Mystic Forge, it would actually be quite simple -
Back -
250x Badge of Honor
50x Glob of Ectoplasm OR 50x “Conquest Token” (purchased with Karma in WvW)
240x Philsopher’s Stone/40x Crystal
1x “WvW Relic Tier1” (dropped randomly like the mist essences – high chance from castle/keep lords, moderate from towers, low from supply camps, minimal from yaks and sentries – combined with a crafting material to determine item attributes)
OR
1350x Badge of Honor
1x Gift of Battle
240x Philsopher’s Stone/40x Crystal
1x “WvW Relic Tier1” (dropped randomly like the mist essences – high chance from castle/keep lords, moderate from towers, low from supply/mercenary camps – combined with some material, maybe a lodestone or core, to determine item attributes)
This makes the back piece take, in theory, the same amount of effort. The only difference is that people would have to earn the badges instead of having the option of purchasing them off the TP.
Ring -
10x “WvW Relic Tier2” (purchased with tokens awarded by a new WvW Ascension daily, configured to take approximately as much time as running fractals – take X supply camps/towers, kill X yaks/sentries, kill X players, etc)
Again, in theory, this would make the rings take the same amount of time to earn, minus the ability to get one from a random drop.
Infusions -
No change. The AR stat is only used in PVE so the current PVE methods can be used to obtain/upgrade.
Skins -
I don’t see a need to put matching fractal weapon skins in WvW, but there is a general lack of interesting WvW skins that should be addressed.
Gating -
FOTM is obviously gated to appease the progression crowd. The same could be accomplished by doing two things:
A new vendor that is the ONLY source of the required crafting items (“Conquest Token,”, “WvW Relic Tier1” attribute modifier mat, and “WvW Relic Tier2” token). This vendor would be unlocked by completing an achievement involving doing a wide and all-inclusive variety of tasks in WvW (taking and defending camps/towers/keeps/castle, lifetime kill requirement, dredge/quaggan/ogre/hylek alliance, etc). This same vendor can have unlockable tabs added for future gated content.

So in other words implement a grind to get statistically superior gear.
@morrolan: There already is a grind to get statistically superior gear. It’s just that the statistics are basically trivial.
Also, I refuse to believe 1350x Badge of Honor is, in theory, anywhere near the amount of effort you put into getting artifacts from Fractals. I’ve pretty much done nothing but WvW with the exception of leveling mostly in PvE, and I have 438 BoH. I’ve been playing this Warrior for 283 hours over the past 3 months.
Assuming I’ve spent 125 hours in WvW (probably higher, but I’m being conservative), that’s 385 hours for me to hit 1350 BoH. For a back piece.
Easy to implement? Yes.
Unbiased means of providing gear that all can equally achieve regardless of role played? Up for debate.
The problem they’re going to have is that any specifically objective based WvW means of acquiring the gear is going to result in people potentially looking to just flip-flop towers/keeps/etc. and ruin the spirit of the game. You can’t give any MMO gamers these days an inch without them looking for every way to exploit the system and then claim the game mode is ruined/bad/broken/etc.
PvEers who insinuate a playstyle that yields the max amount of xp/karma/coin in public chats on WvW maps already exist. They aren’t going away unless WvW fully separates from PvE.
@morrolan – The gear grind already exists, sorry. Like Cogbyrn said the stats are (currently) not significant, at least for WvW. I could see that gap widening in the future.
@Cogbyrn – Numbers would definitely need to be adjusted based on whatever ANet’s internal drop rates show. You are correct that intentional objective swapping could be a problem, that’s not something I considered, although I suspect that’s already done on the less competitive servers to farm karma/coin. Perhaps keep the achievement “unlock” requirement (it’s one-time and all-inclusive, so really no benefit to swapping) and move the “WvW Relic” drops to wandering champion/veteran/legendary mobs?
You could also replace the Badge of Honor requirements on the first back piece option with T6 mats like the PVE version, and use the token-for-karma/skillpoint option instead of ectoplasm (it’s been my experience that Karma is the most abundant currency reward along with XP).

Do Not Bring Gating to WvW, Thank You Very Much.
So you all think my 700 badges aren’t going to be useful for ascended gear?

700 can’t buy you a current gear set, why would a new one be cheaper? O_o
So you all think my 700 badges aren’t going to be useful for ascended gear?
I think the reason it may be karma or a new currency is the delay in adding it to the game and even pve fotm people had to start from scratch towards their new ascended gear when that was released.
I wished they remove JP and just make higher badge drop rates already >.>
too many PvE players that want their legendary spam on map chat. “Mesmer in JP?”
assured 1 badge per player kill or revive would work out a lot better.
I’d like to see ascended gear (weapons, accessories and armor) become available to buy at certain tiers of WvW kills (total).
10,000 Kills
25,000 Kills
50,000 Kills
or something similar.
How about making the costs even to the current badge requirements with the Invader set pieces coupled with boatloads of karma?
Both of which exclusive WvW’ers will have in fair enough abundance of to buy outright and equal their PvE or gold farming brethren.

Any lower tier server and certain classes outright would never see the 25k let alone the 50k level of kills. Doing this would only force to make the PvE Ascended route the only viable choice for those smaller WvW servers who themselves would already be facing an uphill battle against greater enemies and even their own morale.
Why would a low tier server change anything? Why would a specific class change anything? I’m from Borlis Pass which has been a low tier server many times over. I still ended up getting the same amount of kills on a winning or losing week. No, I’m not a thief, ele or mesmer.
