Best Roamer/Sabateur?
I suggest a lactose intolerant thief for that.
all is vain
Lame kitten thief, but please do not play one. We got enough of them already.
I do 2 & 3 with my Guardian. I can usually have a non upgraded camp cleared before the swords appear and just have to wait on the cap so the arrival of a zerg does not bother me. Sometimes I get away, sometimes I do not.

Now that’s an option I hadn’t really given much thought. What are you doing to dps so fast? Also, how’s speed on a Guardian?
If I get a good pull in a camp I drop a wall of reflection just in front of those nasty scouts, pull everything in range to that wall, call up my Hounds. The initial group will be down and I usually either have only the Super or the Quartermaster to go after. At times if the Yaks attack they will knock you around a bit so stability is useful. Takes a bit of practice at each camp to know the best spot to pull from but the nice thing about using the Guardian is if it goes wrong you can take a bit of a beating and pull away until things reset.
As I use GS and Staff, I can use Symbol of Swiftness, Save Yourselves and drop out my Wall of Reflection and put in Retreat until I get to my next objective. That will allow me almost a continuous speed buff.
Hi, I hate zerg’ing, it’s just not my thing. But I like keep siege and small gang stuff. Lately though I’ve mostly just been doing my own thing. And wondering if the community can help me out with what my next class would be to fit the following criteria.
1. Would like to be able to outrun the zerg should it arrive.
2. Would like to be able to solo supply camps if possible.
3. Can do #2 within a reasonable amount of time so as not to HAVE to enforce #1 ;-)I’m suspecting this is either a thief or warrior?
- can be done by a good amount of professions, thieves are just really good at it.
- can be practically done by any profession and still follow #3 given you know how to handle it.
roaming in general can be done by any profession for the most part. it’s up to the player and how they handle their class rather than the other way around; though some classes are desperately in need of a nerf at the moment- the main offenders being necros, engies, warriors, and perplexity rune builds.
I’m suspecting this is either a thief or warrior?
I suspect you are right.
I would choose guardian to be best for clearing camp, but then again zerg avoiding is easier with thief and warrior.

Try out elementalist. It has problems with conditions, but it solos things well and has the ability to escape well.
Try out Mesmer. It can solo and handle 1vX. Not the best at running but still possible.

Engi. Can 1vX when played well. Can outrun just about anything. (Rocket Boots, lolgg).
Pull camp mobs, spam nades/bombs, win.
I would suggest a an engineer. They can get away and be very, very tough to kill if played well.

As far as your comment about the ele, no… just no… Eles are 4 times the effort for 60% of what other classes can do. Mine is shelved until anet fixes them and/or brings some other classes back in line.
Mesmers have some stupid 1v1 builds right now.
….
I would have to say the best roamer is a thief due to its mobility and ability to have complete control of an engagement. Its not the best 1v1 class at the moment, but its alright. The thief is an easier class to play too.
Any class can roam though, its a matter of personal choice.

My Mesmer build.
A ranger can solo camps pretty darn quick and fast and is pretty darn mobile. You’ll just be frustrated if/when the fight size scales up.
Engineer ftw, with the right build you can do anything, I recently posted a video and build on YouTube of a build that can do everything you want and more, if you interested I can post it for ya.

In terms of pure speed for out-running a zerg, Thief and Warrior are way ahead of any other class.
However, they aren’t best for 1vX and flipping camps quickly.
I’d recommend Engineer or Elementalist, they both have decent mobility/escape options, and are far more capable in 1vX situations. However, they do have a slightly higher skill threshold, that puts some people off.
Mesmer and Guardian are both fantastic in 1vX, but they don’t have the mobility to escape a bad situation.
I havn’t done much solo-ing on my ele yet so I won’t comment on that. My thief, eng, and mes do these things very well.
As far as a Mesmer’s mobility… they can run and juke like the wind. Phase retreat moves you away from the target regardless if you’re facing them or not and is on a very short cooldown. That with blink, portal, stealth, cripples, and 100% swiftness uptime makes them very very hard to catch.
It just depends on how you have your mes built.

Not outrunning zergs, but 1v1 and 1vX situations it’s necro no doubt, and camp flipping is a breeze compared to other classes as well.
Surprised it wasn’t mentioned.

I’ve mained necro since launch and I can say that most Necros agree that we are not a 1vX type of class. We can be howitzers if protected, but generally die if focused. No escapes, no blocks of invulnerabilities, no extra dodges or evades. 1V1 we are powerful, but not 1vX, or at least not as powerful as other classes.
please post it.

the second build will take out a camp faster but the first build is defiantly the way to go for roaming, great mobility and sustain with huge condition damage. you’ll find the link to the forum post in the info area which has the builds
With stat creep, soloing camps is pretty much trivial on my guardian, warrior, and necro. I suspect it is this way for all of the classes if they have the right build.

The best roamer is you, pretty much any class can be played well as a roamer if you yourself are a capable player. I’ve even seen roaming necros do well.
really bad engineer

Thus looks perfect thanks! What kind of gear do you recommend? Assume something cond heavy?

If you want to roam with an Engi, look at the build in my sig. I agree with everyone here that engineers are amazing, but they have the highest skill cap of any profession. The build in my sig is as close to immortal as you can get, ive even won a 1v4 with it, and im no great player.

Thanks ukuni, I’ll try it when I get 80

Not true in wvw, in tpvp maybe against competent players, but in wvw I’ve fought 4+ horrible level 80’s where they all went down to one epidemic in 5 seconds.
1vX you got so much aoe and also you’re capable of bursting one guy down and e.g. plague stomping one.
I run the standard 30/20/0/0/20 and with last gasp and spectral armor I got decent protection uptime and life force so very often I’ll be able to tank through their focus and use my burst/aoe to down them…
And camps melt with epidemic.
I recommend necro ^^

You wanna outrun angry mobs and zergs while soloing supply camps? How about killing supply yaks and resetting you hp (ooc) in front of the enemy’s face? Perma-contesting enemy waypoints like nothing?
I’ve got just the right build for you, my friend. This build is has the best mobility in the game while doing great sustained condition damage. The only thing that comes close in mobility is a Sword/Warhorn + Greatsword warrior. Engineers mentioned above don’t even come close.
It’s a pistol/dagger condition build for thief, great when outnumbered even better in a 1v1. Use Shortbow as an escape tool and for shadowsteps. With this build you have MASSIVE survivability dude to the large amount of evade, vigor, shadowsteps, stealth and permaswiftness you get. Damage comes mostly from pistol bleeds. It’s a reliable way to kill off most people in wvw. It ain’t no “zomg dps 15k backstab hurr durr” but it gets the job done while giving you best mobility in the game and general survivability.
With the mobility, you have full control of engagement. Trust me, if you’re the solo roamer type you’ll want this. The ten guys struggling to keep up while you ooc will too. If the 1v1 you’re fighting suddenly becomes an angry mob of 10, you can hop out of there with incredible ease. If you hate waypointing back to the keep right after being run over a zerg, p/d thief is the way to go.
Like you, I never enjoyed zerging or being part of a blob. It seemed so meaningless and boring being just one person in a blob. Just reply with your preferred gw2 build calculator and I’ll show you the ways of the mobile p/d thief. Lately I’ve been lazy about recording my gameplay but I’ll upload some old footage.
You have no self-respect? Then choose D/P thief (or P/D Dire/Centaur or Perplexity) and warrior – guaranteed escape even when you were brain afk eating chips with one hand and drinking beer with the other until the first zerglings swing their weapons on you.
You want a challenge? Then choose engi, guard or necro. You will need good positioning and awareness to surivive reliably.
I am roaming on necro, and while it is true what this Aphix guy said regarding 1vX, you`ll still lack escape tools to dodge the zerg or adds joining your fights. Means you`ll die more compared to the above mentioned classses until you delevoped said positional and combat awareness.
Rangers, Eles and Mesmers are somewhat middleground in regards to solo roaming. Can be brilliant in some situations, but not as good in other areas.
Best regards

Yeah man hook me up.
Yah roll engineer. They still pretty rare to see on the battle field so if anything you can be unique and if you become really good at the class you will stand out amongst the pack.
lol Moon, get off the high horse. It’s funny, I used to think like you. I actually mained mesmer before rolling a thief. Back then, my server Sanctum of Rall was a T3 server and had a lot less zergs running around. Oh how things have changed. Currently In T1 most 1v1’s quickly turn into 1vzerg. I simply got sick of it being a numbers game.
Anyways, Banjax it’s up to you what you want to roll. Sure you’ll have more utility and more of a “challenge” if you go necro, engi or guard. The challenge being how many seconds you can survive while being zerged down. In the end, I never found it worth it to roam with any other profession.
This is my exact build I’m using. You can make some more improvements to the equipment if you grind for backpiece or ascended stuff. with t5 condi food, giver’s weapon and sigil of agony you’ll have 7 seconds of bleed per stack.
The Centaur runes gives you swiftness on heal. and with Withdraw’s short cd and snare cleaning, you’ll have permaswiftness and be hard to pin down. Shortbow’s (with sigil of energy for a free evade) shadow steps aren’t affected by snares so you can switch to that if withdraw is on cd. Your utilities are all failsafes as well. You can pretty much run circles around the enemy if you want to. Just keep in mind that all CC is dangerous, fear necros, hammer warriors, mesmer’s magic bullet etc. If you’re outnumbered by a competent team using CC then forget about beating them, just move on to your next objective.
Most damage comes from “Sneak Attack” bleeds. You need stealth in order to use Sneak Attack and most of that stealth will be coming from the skill “Cloak and Dagger”. Don’t miss your cloak and dagger’s. All the traits in the build will assist you in relevant ways.
Play around with the build for a bit and see if you like it.
