Best Server: Small Scale Roaming WvW?
Anvil Rock. We currently have so much open space, you could run around our home BL 2 times and not sett an ally :P
Stay far away from tier 1 na my guild only does small man teams and we spend most of our time messing with the megablobs and running. If we do find another group to fight it usually ends up where a zerg comes in (either side really) and takes away the fun. If for some reason you do find a fight that the megablobs aren’t part of you still get to enjoy the special blend of skill lag that is part of GW2s charm. I would suggest EB or Mag I seem to recall having some fun playing against their small teams when we faces them. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
What is tier 1?
I found this site: http://mos.millenium.org/na It lists the servers 1 – 15.
Is tier 1 the top 5 servers, top 10?
Is Anvil Rock completely dead? lol Do you find any fights at all, I’d like to be able to roam with 5 people an not BE the zerg because there isn’t anyone else playing. lol

I agree that Anvil Rock has a lot of roamer (including me). We have always had a good roaming presence from some of our pvp folks that occasionally pop over to wvw. Nowadays, our population is low enough, that even our zergs max out at about 20, and many times we only have about 8 on a map.
Yeah I would stay away from SoR, BG, JQ, TC and DB. I would also consider avoiding FA as they are in a spot that might have to fight those others. Don’t get me wrong these servers are great but the game is not designed for the numbers that are fielded by them in WvW. Just my .02.

With random match ups tiers are kinda misplaced. Before Tier 1 would be the top 3 servers by rating. Now you can look at it 2 ways, a tier 1 server is the top 3 servers by rating (BG/SoR/JQ) or you can say the first match on the list is tier 1 (SoR/BG/TC) The term “Tier” is more in reference to placement.
On topic, I find some good fights solo roaming in tier 1 right now with TC here. But like every one said it is very hard to find small groups or solo fights. I don’t know much about the lower servers but if your looking to only roam T1 might not be the right place but there are some really good small man groups on SoR and BG.
Zikory – Retired Thief
Zikkro – Zergling Necromancer
I play on T1 blackgate and mostly do small scale normally there are only 3 zergs 2 enemy and your teams. What I like to do is if I see someone attacking bay I will sit in between bay and garrison and take out players trying to make it back to bay. My guild and I run 5-8man almost every night that we do not have official wvw on those night they run 20-30 players and i scout/gank players.

Anything Tier 5 and below I imagine.
Stay out of Tier 1 whatever you do. Despite what others tell you, if you even attempt to roam around in small groups, your either going to be dead or way pointing every 3 min, due to the larger group.
Another thing to consider in your choice is wvw activity if your going to a lower tier (idk never been down there) you might have trouble finding players to kill. In t1 when I have a problem it is the opposite I found to many players lol.

So from the sounds of it, my best bet maybe to pick a server that is the the bottom 5 rankings.
For instance:
Sorrow’s Furnace
Henge of Denravi
Eredon Terrace
Ferguson’s Crossing
Anvil Rock
It sounds like those servers have smaller zergs and maybe more small scale roaming groups.
Or is it better to pick a middle of the pack server?
For instance:
Ehmry Bay
Yak’s Bend
Stormbluff Isle
Kaineng
Darkhaven
Gate of Madness
Northern Shiverpeaks
Isle of Janthir
Devona’s Rest
I’d be worried about not being able to find fights on the lowest rank/pop servers. Is that an issue? It sucks roaming for an hour and maybe getting one fight or none.
There are some roaming groups in both the bottom and 5 and the middle, but it seems a bit more prevalent at the bottom (AR used to be middle, and dropped after we lost most of our players). The real problem with the middle tiers is that there are enough zergs around that will wipe you mid-fight often, and small parties tend to just increase in size when they wipe. However, you can run around in small havoc groups and try to take camps.
In the lower tiers, small groups can often take towers as there just aren’t as many people on the other side to mount huge defenses and wipe everything (although it does happen).
on fc… every server we have fought always has at least 10 people in wvw at any given time, and theyre all looking for fights as well. larger scale fights exist at prime time only. if you want to run as a satellite group to a zerg, its much welcomed by the larger group (and hated by the enemies).
there is no shortage of action for me. (course i do most everything, from soloing camps to 5 man grouping to leading a pug zerg)
any of the bottom 6-9 servers are legit for transfers with small group / roaming action that will be relatively safe from the whole turn-a-corner-and-cry-in-the-face-of-a-zerg thing roamers from higher tiers complain about. that said, go to AR. they need people the most right now.
head here to discuss wvw without fear of infractions
I also wanted to add, on AR, you have the added benefit (for now and the immediate future) of almost always having the outmanned buff. Because of this, roaming will be more profitable (better loot) and less costly (no repair bills when you wipe). I am enjoying that aspect while we are being roflstomped.
Suzu,
If i asked what you asked, I’d want a straight up answer given in return. I’ve played this game since launch with the mentality it seems you have. You are NOT going to find what you are looking for anywhere. Lower tiers SEMI SOMETIMES ALMOST MAYBE resemble a couple small man teams that now run in anything over 7-10.
But from a fellow daoc 8manner to another, you will NOT find competitive natured teams running around in any tier. Only teams that dont want to lose, and do whatever it takes (tower hug, run getaway specs that do zero dmg but cant really be killed without chasing across a full map, or just plain and simple add numbers upon numbers upon numbers to guarantee they dont die) to make sure that doesn’t happen regardless of how little it makes them look competitively.
All these people will tell you “oh no that guys wrong this server, no this server, no this server….blah blah blah”….but from a real competitive natured 8manner to another, it doesnt exist. People that tell you it does dont know what precisely you are looking for. If it is 1-2 good fights during primetime every 45 minutes to an hour, than yea, this may work for you. You will search for 45 minutes roaming trying to find a fairish/good fight, and most likely be zerged down by 30 scrubs.
Sorry man, cold hard facts. Wait for camelot unchained is the answer.

I would pick a middle tier server, for example Ehmry Bay is the only server Ive played on. It varies quite differently in number based on the time of the week and time of day. On reset night we can queue every borderland and have 50 vs 50 man zerg fights. Other nights a 3 man group can take half a borderland before the enemy gets wise and they wp out and repeat elsewhere. So in other words we have a lot of times where we will have medium/big size zerg balls but like 80% we have the population to where a small havoc group can make a noticeable difference.
