Best current guides for learning WvW?
Metabattle can provide informations on WvW, not alot, but at least it is something!
https://metabattle.com/wiki/Guide:WvW_Guide_For_a_Novice
Anyway. Here’s my advice.
1. If there’s no commander, surefire chance that there is no zerg in this borderland. Switch to another one if your build that you uses for WvW does not function with roaming.
2. If you’re quite skilled, which I’m seeing your goal for the Legendary as stated in your post. You’re not limited to sentries, and ruin capture. You can also try, and attempt to solo a Camp. They’re relatively easy to do, and seldom to have player defenders stopping you.
Aside from that. Welcome to the WvW.
The meta will change with today’s balance patch and then again with PoF.
It’s common as a roamer to:
- flip sentries, camps, and even towers if you’re good enough
- defeat enemy roamers
- +1 other people’s fights
- contest enemy keeps with waypoints
- scout enemy troop movements and report them in map chat
- watch for ojs on the map and report in map chat
Do not go for the meta. It is really not good. Find a guild that will help you find a build so you have a good group comp when you run. If you run solo just keep your head on a swivel. Take camps, sentries, and maybe even towers(if you can get away with running supply, and you have enough DPS to take down lords), and just generally have a good time. My best advice is not to get discouraged. If you die just remember Waypointing and repairing are free.
One pro tip that even veterans doesn’t seems to know. Always use siege if you can. Can’t figure out why all cannons and carts are free when there is fight in keep for example. You always contribute more when you use siege.

I would also suggest you ignore metabattles. Too many use the builds there, find they underperform in WvW then complain on the boards that the builds they face or OP.
If you like small scale and roaming deliberately look for fights , lots of them and if you fall WP out and look at the logs. Try and determine what beat you and what mistakes you made. If you are consistently beaten by a specific element of the game (power or condition, lack of blocks, lack of dodge, inability to stealth and so on) then start tweaking your build with traits abilities or variants that address that specific weakness.
Getting killed a lot is not a bad thing. It exposes your weaknesses and demonstrates your strengths and you can tailor your build around those.
As far as individual skills go you will not learn much running with a zerg. I feel those lessons best learned in individual or smaller group play and then can be better translated to large group play.
As far as commanders go , they are not really needed nor is a zerg. Over time you will learn when to move maps because there no opposition or just where those enemy players are on a given map and their patterns of movement. You can seek them out on your own or just run with a couple of others on your map. Scouts tend to broadcast this information on chat so pay attention to that.
While I tend to solo roam most of the time you can have some very fun fights if you running in a small group and meet a like sized enemy group.

Find a build that suits your playstyle. Everyone plays differently, what works for someone else may not work for you.
Don’t stress over dying. In fact it’s often the only way to get better. Get back up and try again. Also: once you get over a fear of dying, be fearless, dive in face first, you’ll play better.
If it’s prime time and busy, don’t wait for someone to rezz you. Respawn and run back as fast as you can.
Learn the map. If you see an enemy yell out three things: where they are and in what direction they’re headed; how many of them; and if it’s an organized guild or just a mass of players.
Check out if your server has community events. Many will have fun nights like drunk raids, offer lessons on how to survive in a blob, or even give defense clinics. These are your teammates who will come to rely on you. Get to know them.
Lastly, roam. Learn how to survive outside the blob and become invaluable to your server.
My other question is should I avoid this mode if there isn’t a comm/squad around? As quite a few times the maps I’ve been in have seemed really empty, with no comm or group around. And those are the times I’ve not really known what I’m meant to be doing/got bored, as aside from being able to take out some sentries or capture a ruin, there doesn’t appear to be much else to do when the map seems empty.
Once you get map aware you can solo towers, and duo keeps. My best is three taking Stonemist Castle.
My best memory of WvW is getting creamed by a 40 night blob and my teammates getting back up and five of them heading back to SM for revenge.
I yell out on map, what? Are you crazy? There’s six of us and 40 of them.
The buggers flipped it lol.
Never worried about dying again after that.
Find a mediocre friendly guild on your server to join for wvw. one that raids maybe 5-10hrs/week. Progress up to the more hardcore guilds that run group comps and in groups of 15-25 ish. Shouldn’t be too hard to identify your A guilds from your C guilds on each server. WvW becomes alot more enjoyable when you find a good crew to run with.

Thanks all for all the helpful info, pointers and advice
There’s a lot of really great stuff there for me to go on, will deff be playing this mode a lot more
If you put what server you’re on you might have some people offer to help you out on the server and show you the ropes.

I haven’t seen an actual guide akin to something say Dulfy would put out. That would be amazing to see though. Maybe one day a very dedicated WvW’er will make one and put it up on a website for all to read, research, and review.
