Best internet connection speed for WvW
I have 35/3 and it seems to be sufficient for WvW.
Thanks for the reply Excalibur! Does anyone have a slower internet service that works well in WvW?
Doesn’t matter, servers will lag due to amount of players regardless of your connection.
(sarcasm aside, an average connection should suffice)
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.
Thank you so much!
Yea i had like 4download 1 upload. Works fine. Upgraded to 10 and still works fine
The only one that needs to worry about internet speed in ANet, not us. Any kind of internet connection save for dial up, will work perfectly fine. Of course even if you have a 100mb/sec connection but have torrents/downloads running at 99.99% of your bandwidth, you will lag, but that’s without saying. The lag you see is however caused by ANet servers most of the time, which are far too slow for the numbers of people on map.
I can play on 22K dialup.
I can offer the point of view of someone who upgraded from ADSL 8Mbits/sec to a 100 Mbits/sec (download:10Mega Bytes/sec, upload:4Mega Bytes/sec ) Fiber Connection for WvWvW:
- Old connection: at 50 players on screen game is still responsive, 200+ players on screen (stone mist castle Blackgate+Sanctum Of Rall+Jade Quary), laggy as hell, skills do not activate, game disconnects.
- Fiber connection: 200+ players and downloading movies while playing is ok.
Note: in the US you may have a restricted bandwith usage per month, but we dont have that limitation in France. However with Google Fiber, the US will be 10 times faster than us.
Bandwidth really shouldn’t be all that decisive as games don’t generally consume a lot of bandwidth. Most of the time you won’t be transferring more than 5-10 kb/seconds, with the odd spikes in stressful situations.
What does matter however is the quality and speed of your connection, as in how long does it take the signal to travel the internet and how reliable is it.
Ping and Jitter can give you a solid indication but aren’t the only factors. WLAN for example can give you both a stable ping and little Jitter while still causing in game lag.
A fiber connection directly into your PC is the best you can get.
Anything that works without a direct cable connection (WLAN, Satellite or whatever) is suboptimal.
As for bandwidth…there really shouldn’t be a huge difference between a 5Mbit and a 50/Mbit connection as long as they are using the same tech.
I use my HTC mobile phone, turn on the wifi, get my PC connected to my mobile phone and play through that on the awsome 3G network in Australia…
6 hours a day between 4pm and 10pm I lag to the point of a slide show.
….. And Elementalist.
I have 300 Mbps and I get 5-10 fps in SMC 3 way fight
I don’t think that download speed matters much as I play sometimes on a pocket LTE connection or my wireless canopy at home. However the lower ping though the better.
I switched to a KillerNIC system a couple of months ago, and I’ve noticed a huge decrease in lag in WvW fights, to the point that it’s barely noticeable for me, even in large 60v60v60 battles. I’m on Blackgate, btw, in NA Tier 1. I thought at first that it had to do with the “server optimizations” that Anet had been putting out at about the same time that I built my new system, but guildies have been telling me that their lag is about the same as ever, so the KillerNIC thing might not be total BS (which was what I had previously assumed, I only have it b/c it’s built into my motherboard).

The motherboard I use is an MSI Z87-GD65:

For reference, my connection speed is 10mbps/1mbps.
I have 60/6 and still when I meet a zerg/vs zerg the game almost comes to a halt. Seems like either there is too much stress on the server or this mmo is not designed to be played by many people at once.
Anything above about 1.5DL/0.7UP should be fine. Anything lower and you will have issues. If you’re above those speeds, the limiting factors are going to be your computer specs (for framerate) and the GW2 servers load capacity.
If you are running a speed as low as 1.5/0.7 then you should not be running ANYTHING else in your background. Even pandora will throw it off when it changes songs.

0.5 Mbit is enough for WvW. I never get more than 400Kbit/s download speed during heaviest fights.

Agreed, forced into playing on a 3G cell connection at times and the game runs rather well. Video lag is more caused via your video card then game data trans missions. If you are getting screen lag its pobably more that then your connection. I get 60-70 fps because my laptop has good hardware versus my crappy internet connection. And thats playing in T1 server fights against all 3 sides zergs at one time. The faster the connection the better but you can play on only .5 MB.
