So with the latest patch, I’ve finally got a reason to enter WvW. I know the basic mechanics – basically “Hold onto your Points! Seize theirs!”.

The problem is that it’s huge. So when I go in, I ask “Where’s help needed?” I get a name, spent some time finding it on the map. Then I’m on my way. Usually takes me 5 mins to get there and by that time it’s all over…if I even manage to reach it!

So I figure this would go easier with a party. I ask in map chat if there’s any slot open and no response – at least for the three or four times I’ve tried it.

Occasionally I catch a zerg and follow along…but I don’t really know what’s happening, or why the direction of the zerg changed, or where we’re going next.

So…how do you guys go about it?

Ventari’s Tablet tells us “From the smallest blade of grass to the largest mountain, where life goes—so, too, should you.” That’s how you should go about it. Like a leaf on the wind, trying not to be an unconscious leaf on the ground. For there may be cookies and cake if you wander long enough.

Or pie. Pie is awesome.

I belong to a really tiny guild, so when I go in I look for a commander’s insignia and head for it. After awhile you get to know the commanders and their individual styles and you may choose to run with one over another.

As for joining a group… once I’ve caught up with the commander I can click on him to get the “join squad” prompt. You can do that from the map, too, by clicking on the blue insignia. Make sure “Squad” is checked in the list of chats available on your chat box. (You can see the list by clicking on the little gear at the top left corner of your chat box.)

Most servers have a website. You might google your server name to find yours. You can get to know your fellow players better by participating in your server’s forums, and you may even find that your server hosts their own VOIP server. That’s probably the best way to get the scoop on what’s happening in game, and to communicate while you play.

Find a commander, follow the magnet and hope your server’s commanders are nice enough to either communicate in mapchat or offer a TS so you can listen.
Or find some friends/good guild to play with.

Depends on what server you are on. On TC we have a serverwide mumble with a channel for each BL. Most commanders will also type what they are going to do or what you should be doing next, but they have to keep it to a minimum so they don’t get suppressed. You may have been following a group that was in voice chat and was not relaying things in chat.

Mostly it just takes time, after a while you will get the jist of what is going on.

I find that finding a good guild and setting a ‘WuvWuv Night’ works best. Even if it isn’t WuvWuv night, you can still find a guildie to tag along.

Small group can help just by using guerrilla tactics and picking off supply caravans. Find a camp and lock it down. The smaller jobs often get forgotten in the zergs. That’s what I like to do.

See if you can join a WvW guild or at least a PvX one that spends time there. If you are already in a PvE guild then ask if you can rep your new WvW one when in WvW. Being in a WvW guild will help you alot with finding a party, finding commanders to follow etc and they will look after you and explain things etc (I hope )

Its great that you have decided to try out WvW. Do you mind me asking why this latest patch has given you a reason to do so? Is it that culling is now a thing of the past or some other reason?

Experience varies greatly based on what tier/server.. but in general, spend a week or two just exploring the maps and getting to know the locations, you’ll end up in groups of varying sizes along the way and get a decent feel for typical activities.

There’s a lot to learn(PvP itself, how siege works, how scoring works, how to gauge which way a crowd will move, etc..) so don’t worry if it takes a while before you start being less confused.

Camp in JP killing people. Wait for party invites where they trash talk you and check forums to see threads where people cry about fighting in JP. What? You thought the game was about holding towers? Extra points for making carebears mad when you kill their “friend” from enemy server.

Find a server with a server-wide voice chat (Devona’s Rest has one on TeamSpeak3) and listen. Commanders will usually be talking tactics and you can determine where most people are on the map. During chat lulls you can ask questions, and if you get snarky replies you picked the wrong server.

Lol, this is just an added bonus to WvWing.

I only mass WvW when with my guild.

Solo play in WvW is massively under rated when you apply yourself. Everyone can solo flip supply camps but push the boundaries and see what your able to do.

Now that there are rewards and progression in WvW, I feel I can put time into it and get something in return
