Hi all,

During this weekend you will have the opportunity to experience the new enhanced squad UI in World vs World! This is a quality of life feature intended to improve the squad experience for both Commanders as well as squad members. It is important to remember that the Enhanced squad UI is still in beta and while we feel the feature is in a position to share with you, we do have enhancements and polish work scheduled. Below is a short list of those areas we know are outstanding.

Enhanced squad UI
• Raid markers are not yet enabled in game.
• Open Squad control – a squad’s ability to self-organize vs. Commander controlled – is not yet enabled.
• As we change over to the new squad format there will be some disruption in the way existing squads work. Disbanding and forming a new squad should help iron out any lingering incompatibility.
• Squad member nameplates (the green rectangles representing each squad member in the UI) can become sized differently between subgroups. Resizing the overall UI should fix it.
• Calling a target (default CTRL+T) is currently squad-wide, but is planned to work per subgroup.
• Subgroup chat is not visible by default. It can be enabled in the chat window’s Tab Options if desired.
• Ability to hide other commander tags is not yet enabled. Currently your squad’s Commander tag will be highlighted when any tag is hovered over to make it easier to identify.
• The ability to see per subgroup and squad total supply count in WvW is not yet enabled.

Instead of changing that how about adding a call subgroup target?
A personal target would also be nice and of course the corresponding ‘take target’ hotkeys.

Unfortunately with the current functionality this will be completely useless. You need to be able to see boons and conditions on your party members or you are just crippling your team. Either allow this to be used in conjunction with the party UI or have it show boons / conditions for your party, perhaps by allotting a larger part of the UI element to your own subgroup.

Ran into a pretty game breaking bug for this, EBG seemed to have crashed, booting me and most everyone around out of the map, when we logged back in, our party UI had broken. We cant leave the squad can’t remake the squad, can’t remove people from the squad. Can’t join parties or anything really, we’re simply met with a “The player or channel was not found” Error. Restarting the client entirely fixed it, however.

Can the “ready check” please be an option under the drop down? It takes up space and is annoying just sitting up there in the corner. Would rather it be hidden away… or let some other poor commander deal with it.

Next time you want us to test these kind of things in WvW, could you please not do it just minutes after reset? That would be great. At least if this was patched say an hour before, we would have gone into WvW knowing it had issues. Not get kicked out of WvW and ruin our reset.

It looks like this latest patch has made it impossible for anyone who had a tag up to no longer be able to log in.

This is probably going to cause some chaos on reset night.

Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence.

So they have turned this back on tonight, and it seems to still be stable, finally.

However, this squad ui, while it has some nice features, is missing a lot of things that make parties far more beneficial than subgroups for those in it, and yet parties are not able to join as such.

  • Party dot change recently if in same guild (that isn’t even consistent though), which has some of the party gold dots, some blue,
  • Those in a squad being blue dots for those not in same subgroup (yet subgroup is supposed to be like a party), and stars if in same subgroup.
  • Cannot see conditions, boons, buffs, etc. in squad. Granted squad ui would get even more cluttered than it already is but, for WvW, this is a big issue. Even something like the simple party ui would be better.

This leads to a question, why did party have to be remade as subgroup for squads? This gives the ‘subgroup’ less information than they would have in a party. Sure it gives the commander more control (which itself isn’t necessarily a good thing. In general WvW, why should the commander be able to dictate what ‘party’ combination I should be with, even able to just randomly reoganize, which can cause confusion. This means there’s less incentive to join a squad. For a guild group, they typically already did something similar in setting up optimal parties. However, it’s very important to know what is happening to your party, not just their health bar. Maybe I’m wrong on this, but I really think, as is, it will not see widespread adoption, and could see less use than currently.

edit: By widespread adoption, I mean besides for raids. Only reason to take it elsewhere is to see party dots of more than a single party, or have non-voice or non-guild chat of more than a a few, but comes with severe drawbacks. Can’t type /p to quickly talk to them, as that’s only party, not subgroup, it’s /subgroup for that.

People can’t leave squads still as of 5 mins ago.. Sorry don’t have more info as I was trying to help someone leave a squad but they couldn’t and said they kept getting an error message They tried /squadleave and also pressing p and leave from there..

I’d personally like to see an option to show the squad view or the party view. That way a party can focus on watching the buffs/conditions within their own group while the commander could toggle on the squad UI view to keep tabs on the squad as a whole.

Of course, this would require a party to even exist. Right now, when you enter a squad, your party is disbanded and the boons you give out seem to freely flow to whomever is closest to you instead of giving party members priority. I thought party was supposed to stay intact, so it’d be nice to get further clarification on this feature. If parties are disbanded and boons go out wherever they want, I don’t see the squad UI being a feature that many WvW guilds would want to use, not to mention the lack of seeing boons/conditions also makes it a tough call.

Seconding Aerial Melodies suggestion. I also noticed I couldn’t see the boons/condi status and wished for an option along the lines of the “simple party ui” option.

We also had trouble understanding how to make sub-squads. It is not intuitive. Dragging wasn’t quite working and I fumbled with right-clicking on people without seeing an option. Someone figured out that sub-squads are made by dragging the person “up” to under your own name, not down to the next line like what would be intuitive.

Forming a party and then starting a squad and having to wait for the people who were in my party to accept the invite to squad was a bit odd. Should just auto-add those players to the squad.

The other thing I noticed was starting a raid type squad, if a squad member entered the raid I could no longer invite anyone else to the squad. It said the person I was inviting was in a full party or full on guilds.

Feedback based on my initial impression from a WvW perspective.

- I don’t need to see everyone in the squad as party members (dark blue names and blue dots on the minimap), only my subgroup.

- I need more info about my subgroup. Something like the simple party UI would be great. I.E. having the simple party list above the new UI, perhaps as a toggleable option.

- The UI needs to be much more extendable, particularly in the vertical direction.

- An option to hide the commander tag to everyone NOT in the squad would be great (so only squadmembers see it).

- Allowing several people in the same squad to have tags up would be great as well.

- Having gaping holes in the player list is confusing to look at. Sorting out of range players to the far right would make it much more pleasing to the eye.

Bugs that I stumbled upon in testing

- Some people can’t accept invites to closed raids.

- The UI keeps resizing on its own, often to a size too small to accommodate the number of players in the squad.

If squads stay as they currently are, my guild, and I know for a fact other guilds, will completely stop using commander tags.

Being able to see party/squad boons and conditions is a must.

Being able to give boon/heal priority to party is a must.

Being able to call targets in party is a must.

If your intention is to make commander-tag completely un-usable for all PvP players, you couldn’t have done a much better job of it.

I can only second what Ragnar is saying. The squad ui in its current form isnt very helpfull, introducing more problems than solving them.

Things that need to change:

  • seperate the commander tag and being able to open a raid/squad
    Sometimes people just need to tag up to show someone their location on the map but opening a raid/squad at the same time is just clunky and not needed.
  • ability to be a commander/use the commander tag even if you’re in a squad (secondary tags)
    It’s nice to assign someone to tag up for all the range classes or to highlight specific players in a guild raid
  • being able to see the buffs and condis of your subgroup
  • prioritising your subsquad member when healing/giving out boons
  • subsquad wide target

If sub squads don’t work and look like parties now, it is a huge setback for guild groups, to the point where I see no use of this functionality.

Tags are being used for a lot of reasons besides pure commanding, like showing your position on the map (scouting/mesmer portal) or position in heat of a fight.

With current system as it is, you are stripping us all these options to have a collections of healthbars and an easier supply count. It’s not going to work this way.

Yesterday we were forced to use the new squad UI in our guildraid and I completely agree on this.

Bug: I created a squad and my party members were invited, aswell someone I was whispering to who is not even playing on my server.

Yesterday we were forced to use the new squad UI in our guildraid and I completely agree on this.

Can’t agree more.
The WvW Community needs these additional features for squad-UI.
Delaying it or disabling it temporarily for WvW till they are added is no problemo A-Net. But please, add them.

Agree with poster above me, boon/condition displays would be great! Not sure how difficult it’d be to color code, but just throwing this out there for a quick UI idea (attached) – Note the “attack, defend, move” buttons would only appear when a subgroup is “selected” in the menu…

Given that allied boons and other AoE effects only apply to a max of five allies, can we just lock squads to subsquads of five members each (unless there was a plan to increase the number of allies that such skills affect)? It’ll be micromanagement to get players into subsquads once more than 5 people join a squad.

A couple of tweak suggestions, the first which has kind of been covered already:

In a squad, you CANNOT see commander tag on the minimap because the squad icons completlely cover it/mask it. The commander tag needs to remain on top of green/blue/stars of the zerg on the minimap

You have to readjust the squad panel size if every time people join a squad, or a squad is added. The problem arises because it resets size to leave as minimal UI as possible.

The subgroups function wasn’t on this beta, I had the same issues inviting people into the squad, the players said they saw the invitation but could not join at all, had to tell people to manually join by pressing “M” key, then right clicking my tag to join…I crashed quite a few times as well due to it, quite buggy for sure…

Just noticed the color idea above might create chaos with rainbow unicorn minimap dots happening since there’s up to 50 players in a squad at one time. A better way might be to simplify it based on player/commander’s mouse-click events…(concept screenshot attached)

**Since there’s limited screen space, it might be better to “remove” player names from the icons since in battle you’d have no time to read them anyways…

Also thought about the simplified UI with bars in vertical fashion adopted from another post (credits to that poster), but you might run out of space on the left side with 50 people…

Thats a great idea, but I dont know how successful it would be. I mean look at how many people fail to grasp the concept of the ready button when joining in sPvP, lol. And thats just one button.

Subgroups were in it. I believe the only thing that wasn’t turned on, was leaderless for raids. Which is how we know the worst flaws with the ui.

Indeed, alot of things can happen when developing a game, and sometimes it’s not just due to technical limitations, but an vast array of agency or human complications. I guess all we can do now is cross our fingers

Ah, I believe their staff already mentioned it’s not enabled yet during the beta test weekend (from very top post in this thread):

Just found out after watching 1 of their live streams, after you get people into the squad, it seems you have to “press & hold” left mouse button on 1 of the green player icons, then drag their icon into the top left grayed out tag symbol, no wonder I couldn’t get it working during beta…
