Blackgate, Isle of Janthis, and Sea of Sorrows are totally screwed
Using the ranking system provided by ANet, there is a 200 point gap between 4th and 5th position, which is the largest WvW skill disparity, meaning that after the top 3 grouping is established, whoever is tossed into the meat grinder with the remaining team, has an extremely high probability to lose.
I currently play on Blackgate with about 30 other friends and guildmates, and we’re already looking to xfer off since we stand no chance against the night crews from any of the top 4 servers. We have faced all of the servers in the top 4 on a regular bases the past 2 weeks, it’s extremely evident there is no hope.
The situation for the 3 servers listed in the title is extremely simple: Try and win and you will lose forever. The only way to have a chance to win is to hope people will xfer to us that are good at WvW (which won’t happen, they will go to one of the top 4) or just roll over until we fall to a lower bracket so someone else gets screwed.
That tier 2 paring in gereral is going to be ugly for the long term matches and prob cause alot of transfers when the matches extend and are basically lost after the first or second night. While killing and taking things is fun in and of it self, trying to take back fully upgraded towers and keeps from the spawn keep is something that will get old VERY fast at the advent of each night.
Or servers can actually take advantage of the “3 faction” so to speak system and tag team the #1 team? God forbid some actual strategy

Explain the advantage of that happening on a long term basis. Even teaming up 2v1 in the long term will have one of those 2 "teamed"servers moving up losing the advantage that came from it . The end result is that one of those servers is moved into the top tier paring and the loser is moved down to the tier2 paring thus they may one for a week or 2 but the next 2 weeks.
What looks good on paper doesnt work as well in application. People on blackgate have been through it since the paring system started working.

I dont disagree that there needs to be a loser but nobody wants to be a perennial whipping boy of the other servers with off prime players. I dont begrudge them for having them its just frustrating to have a semi close prime time then come back from work and be down a decent chunk where the hope would have to be blowing out the winning server for an extended period of time.

I rarely ever see close matches it’s always fairly one sided with one server with a HUGE point lead.
There should be a mechanic in place to help prevent this. Push matches to a more fair close setup. If servers are just getting facerolled for one to two week long games. People aren’t going to bother with WvW period.

sadly I see this as the highest probability, I already on the days where I see the map owned by the enemy and us having the undermanned buff don’t even bother I just leave. (I know I’m not doing a service to my server… but I’ve stuck it out for a while and its fruitless pursuit the zerg comes and there is nothing you can do with a handfull of people.)

this is when you blitzkrieg keeps for karma farming. im on ET, and when cornykittenhendge has a full que at 4am and retakes all our EMPTY keeps, first thing we do when we come back on and the match is lost.

Blackgate here and the sad part is, this is entirely, 100% true. Been playing WvW every day since BWE and I wake up disappointed every morning when I see a server just destroy us in the after hours with ZERO realistic strategy to overcome this.
Even teaming up 2v1 seems like a gigantic mess waiting to happen. Yeah, a few guilds could get together and say, lets team up and not attack one another? Problem is, the amount of pugs and non-guilded players also playing won’t have any idea, throwing a considerable monkey wrench into a team up strategy like that.
But besides that, who cares? Even if the 2v1 strat allows you to crawl back, you’re both just going to lose it in the after hours when all is said and done. Not only that, but who’s right is it to claim a tower or camp when the 2v1 succeeds? How is that supposed to play out? It’s just not viable.
The only real answer to this is to hope Blackgate and the other servers that suffer from zero after hours participation receive serious, international guilds to carry the load. I think that in itself is a pipe dream and my only choice is to look into a EU server that is looking for NA presence. Not exactly what I had in mind but I’d love to know what Anet had in mind for all of this.

What server are you on?
Isle of Janthir. You need 8 people min in WvW with a small crew to do towers. (two rams = 80 supply). That way you can roll up on certain towers and 2 ram the door and take them quickly otherwise you dont have enough speed to avoid the zerg.

Yeah I agree this guys comment is full of respentment about something else. I am not sure what a solution to the problem would be in regards to OP. I think if the server matchings were not all based on W/L but based on WvW server participation metrics and servers were put into classes and your class may change every two weeks depending on how much WvW particpation your server has and at what times. Class A could be servers that are like 100% WvW qued all the time and than go down from there.
If this really upsets you and your group you guys should just transfer. I dont think there is an easy short term fix here.

2v1 is extremely valid. I remember back in UO when it was 3v1 for the orbs at times.
Hell, id rather have them 2v1 us (im on HoD) than us steam roll more :/

Sea of Sorrows here, it seems about 30/70 when I join if we are doing well or not. One thing I think might help would be to add more waypoints to the maps that can be taken over and defended like other structures. Simply because if you have a small group trying to capture a fort or something that happens to be near the outskirts of your map and end up all dying, you have to spend another 6-7 minutes running back to try again, which can be disheartening. I realize that there is strategy involved, but if you are trying to help your team to take a point, and you spend 5 minutes or more trying to reach that point only to get stomped by 2 or 3 players plus the NPCs that hit like a freight train in less than a minute, is really stupidly frustrating.

far shiverpeaks here. we fight against FR server and either riverside or desolation.
the perfect setup is: far shiverpeaks, riverside and desolation. FR takes all at night, leading with 50k the next day is impossible to take back. riverside, desolation and shiverpeaks always has the same PP score and total score ish during our games.

Let’s just say abusing oversights and broken stuff to get ahead isn’t exactly “great skill” it’s exploiting (albeit a softer form)
I don’t blame you guys for using the swiftness stack weapons with a perma swiftness class to run orbs and negate the speed penalty, that’s Anet’s fault for not adding a proper debuff or speed cap to orb running and I blame the Beta testers for not reporting that speed stacking negates the orb run speed penalty.
It’s also Anets fault for not realising that keeps should start a lot more fortified at the beginning of a match, to avoid the “we got in first” zergs, Orbs should take a great deal of time investment to obtain, not capturable in the first hour where everyone is still getting in.
Nor is it your fault or anyone elses that Anet forgot to add a simple “drops orb when using the Mesmer portal” to avoid the portal chaining.
I see Orbs as relics and the keeps that hold them should be as hard to break as the DaoC relic keeps, should they fix this stuff, we shall see how “well” you guys really do when you can’t go zerging straight in for a Major Orb bonus in less than an hour because of broken and underworked stuff playing into your favor.
