This game has gotten on a bit, it’s no where close to the early stages anymore. Server hopping still being free, I think most would agree, is long past it’s closing time.
After the holidays, putting out a 1 week warning (or however long) that server transfers are closing would help out a lot. This would give everyone time to pick their fav server, etc. Then finally close em, for good, balanced WvW.
This part people are probably gonna qq about…. but once server hopping is closed. All points should be cleared, and put the server match ups in order of population. (this due to the points system being currently jacked up due to transfers)
Server hopping has gotten so common, and completely out hand, it’s truly ruining this game.
*Especially for the lower tiers with small populations…
If you’re reading this thread, I don’t care if anyone agrees/disagrees with my opinion on how to go about it or not, that’s not really the subject anyhow.
But putting a /yes or a /no purely speaking in terms of, yes turn em off, or no keep em on, that would be awesome.

Yes, free server transfers should definitely go. I think they’re waiting to implement group play (so you can do PvE with friends on different servers) before they do that.
I don’t think server transfers should be totally off-limits, but there needs to be a cost to it and strong limitations on how often you can do it.
And yeah, the points should be cleared after such a drastic change. Really, the whole points system needs to be re-evaluated (i.e: it’s totally broken). The movement between tiers is just too slow. But that’s a discussion for another thread.
I think the damage is already done with the Free Transfers. My guess is that they won’t end it (if at all) until the Feb WvW patch.
Bear in mind I don’t speak for everyone and this is just my opinion but I think many of the remaining WvW guilds/players on Gunnars Hold are waiting to see what that patch brings and what meta decisionmaking ArenaNet come up with. It will likely be make or break for a lot of players. As I’ve already said in other threads, WvW is fundamentally sound, just some misguided choices by ArenaNet have led to problems for quite some number of players. The ability for players to take advantage of glitched geometry etc is also playing merry havoc with the gaming experience of many, leading to a lot of frustration; the quality of their code needs to be tightened further.
Realistically though, unless there is a change to the points system, the winning server will always be the one with the strongest nightcapping / off-hours team. Thats not skill, not even necessarily organisation, its just having people from somewhere else on the planet hit doors when there is nobody around to fight them. Not my idea of a well designed system. Once again, I think ArenaNet should refer back to how Mythic handled this in WAR (Mythic’s coding was inept, but they had solid ideas about how to handle this kind of thing).
Again, they need to add guesting for the PvE crowd before they close or add a pay element to transfers. Until this happens, we’re just gonna have to deal with it.
While I agree that server transfers have ruined certain communities others benefit from it. I am sure that some of the servers that got transfers and are now thriving because of it are not too upset about free transfers. The way I look at it is that our bracket system is somewhat like a sports playoff that never ends. If every sports team could have their same roster indefinitely the playoff would become totally stagnant. The server transfers are a bit like a draft and retirement in how they effect the teams. In sports there is always an influx of new talent and the old guard is slowly fading out. For individual servers the transfers are either terrible or great and it is very polarizing. For the overall community it keeps movement in the brackets and the opportunity for suffering servers to start to succeed. The transfers create a more natural death and rebirth kind of cycle.
How about a real scoring system that rewards winners and doesn’t reward losers like the current system?
No. My first server was HoD. I did not pick it for any reason other than my friends wanted to go there. I did not participate in WvW until HoD was spawn camped on every map against Blackgate. If I was not able to switch servers, I would have quit Gw2 months ago. Free server transfers are to congregate people like you and me so we can find better populated, dedicated teamwork and players. I suggest you consider transferring to a different server if yours is not performing to your liking. I did not like the idea of leaving my home server, but now that I have, I could not be happier! There is no reason to hold pride onto a server. All servers have the same exact features.

Even sports have a transfer period. You cannot change rosters during the season. Same with the server transfers. If it is so easy to transfer you can just hop to the 1st ranked server, its going to be very boring. Notice how the losing servers don’t get mass influx of players.

And a money limit to enforce balance… lol
I think the free server transfers will go away when they finally get Guesting in for PvE. Just my guess!
/no………………………….

Before or after the game goes to complete death? I know ur on a massive server, so u don’t see it probably, but this game is dying… And this is a big reason for it.
They could just do away with the server competition part and create “WvW Teams”. You sign an account up with whatever team you want and that’s the world you queue into forever. Let people transfer to whatever servers they want or just make everyting one huge cluster.

I agree, I think the free transfers need to be stopped. I’m just theorizing on why they aren’t yet.
NO Locking people into servers for 1 week is more than fair. Locking in for much longer time frames is a quick way to kill off wvwvw even faster. People cant transfer an then will just stop playing. Sure there are benifits to limit transfers but transfering is necessary for the enjoyment of the players, no one wants to be locked in to a deadend server for extended time period. The real problem is the scoring system should be set that if a high pop servers is matched with a lesser pop server then the population in wvw is balenced by how many people are in wvwvw by the lower pop server. If server A has 250 people in game in wvwvw then all servers in that matchup are limited to that amount, an the amounts could float up or down as people can an went. an yes there could be a minium number set so it would always be possible for people to play wvwvw This way matchups could be on a round robin type of setup, an could avoid the 6 weeks in a row fighting the same server.
1.) There’s plenty of competition. If you really think there isn’t, then define what WvW competition is/should be.
2.) I can’t believe people are still upset over server transfers. First of all, people should be able to play on whatever server they want. Just because it would benefit you if someone was on your server, it doesn’t mean that you should have a stranglehold over that person. It’s the same exact concept of slavery that you’re advocating. “Force people to do what I want them to do because I want them to”. Secondly, I’m rather sick of the elitist attitude people have. Apparently if you transfer off of your server, you must have done it because you just want an easy win. If you stay on your server, you must be a holy saint because of your collectivist attitude. How about this. Maybe people transfer because they want to truly enjoy WvW and your server isn’t cutting it.

1.) Show me evidence that there’s so much server hopping. Your feelings do not count.
2.) Those poor low tier servers… how dare those high tier servers have people who like to WvW! This has to be put to a stop. I think we should force people who like to WvW to be put on lower tier servers and have to pay money to leave! After all, those PvE dominated servers deserve to have WvW players work for them by PvDoor for eternity. Unless everybody is a winner, we should force everyone to lose!

I don’t agree at all. I think the only way this system works is if free transfers are carried on and servers allowed to die and be reborn. I know some of you get attached to a server and its community and think its the worst possible thing when your server loses tiers and you feel like its dying, but at the same time, there is another fair weather destination server that is benefiting and moving up.
If you honestly believe that the same person that wants to leave your server for another because of WvW inbalances will instead stick around and continue to play while unhappy, you are just wrong. People who don’t transfer will either quit, or find a way to pay the price. Noone is going to spend their valuable free time unhappy, and either should you.
Actually think free server xfers should continue indefinitely. Some of the top tier server personnel has moved to lower tiers. If you have paid xfers now you might not let the community autobalance itself.
You can’t match people up according to server population because some severs may have huge guilds that do not wvw, or mainly pve. The current match up system, although not perfect, seems to be the best so far.
I also didn’t like the idea of server xfers until the HoD exodus. My guildies had bailed on the game and I was left solo, which I still enjoy… but waiting for HoD to drop tiers so we weren’t spawn camped was just too painful for someone who only wvw’s.
Before the 1 week limit I jumped over to try out the lowest ranked server. It was too much of a culture shock to stay so a friend on BG asked me to come there. I went and hated the community from the minute I got there. I am sure it’s a nice community/fit for some people, but it wasn’t a good fit for me.
I had always enjoyed playing against SBI during the HoD glory days. I never saw any sketchy business from them. I liked their tactics and they seemed to have it together… so I jumped ship again and I love them. Even losing I love these guys. It is a perfect fit.
Had xfers not been available I might not be playing. It’s enough of a punishment to lose your guild upgrades when you xfer imo.
