Build the WvW community - show names
I like the anonymous nature of WvW and I was a major ganker in DAoC, WoW, and Rift. Yes I did enjoy the adversarial nature of those games, keeping track of worthy foes and all that. But to me GW2 is stress-free PvP and I like it.
Sometimes I get ganked bad by 2 or 3 or 20 “invaders” or “defenders” and as the camera pans back from my defeated and shamed avatar I realize — hey, I’m as anonymous to them as they are to me. Right on.

right but stress free anonymous pvp does not build rivalries or a solid community. Good PvP community is yelling to some rival guild “hey we are going to take X Keep, try and stop us!”
Or @ posts between players about a great standoff.
Sadly ANET are to busy with trying to find hacking solutions that they dont have time for reasons to play wvw..
I am fed up with gw2 atm.. pvp is just pve and wvw is the same… cap npc held objectives move on fight invisble zerg die rinse repeat.
WVW has been seriously overlooked in the deveplement stage and now we are seeing the dramtic drop off of players realising that wvw has been given the short straw of the game.
Dramatic drop off of players? Have you looked at the realms, they get more players everyday.. more and more realms are filling up completely. A lot of people enjoy WvW and sPvP and tPvP, and I’m sure they will adjust and improve the systems in the future.
The game has its flaws sure, it only just started, other MMOs weren’t even half as good as GW2 at launch, and even after two years they didn’t get as good as GW2 is at launch. I’d say have some patience, enjoy yourself in the places you can, and trust Anet will evolve the game towards player needs and desires.

ET last night at 12am PST had no queues in tier 1 matchup vs JQ and HOD
So yeah there is a drop off of players. Sorry to break it to you.

Server population =/= WvW population. Even right now on a saturday, my server has the outmanned buff on two borderlands.
With that said, I don’t want to know who I am fighting or want them to know who I am. The last thing we need is whisper wars.
The whole “It doesn’t breed competition” argument is a bad one, it breeds plenty of competition – simply as guilds/servers rather than as players, which is also known as community competition.

yes Zsymon a dramatic drop off of players…. And GW2 launch wasnt amazing lol first 3 weeks there was no trading post or guilds, both down or not working due to bugs….
now we have game breaking wvw hacks that anet dont seem to want to bite the bullet and stop, WAR failed due to similar details- bad rvr/wvw < war had bad lag gw2 has invisble zergs> progression < war was to quick to gain ranks, gw2 has no ranks> war didnt have any rvr hacks from memory but i could be mistaken.
People are transferring from the t1 servers since they are kitten’d off at queues. lol. I don’t call this a dramatic drop off of players from the game, I call this smart. Some of our other servers have actually started getting -more- people instead of less, creating more zone coverage in WvWvW than we had originally.
Instead of individual players having rivalries, Guilds and Servers do.

I agree, there should be server forums and you should know who you are killing.
They should make each name the color that you are, blue/red/green. Easy enough to distinguish servers then.
What ever you may think the lack of rivalry will hurt gw2 alot. Some of the best pvp experiences I have had in the past were based on such things.
if you want to stoke your ego go join structured pvp and do tournaments
By showing names you are only going to cater to one type of players: the ones that like to grief others. You want to be able to see the name easily so you can go back to that player over and over be cause you know he or she is weak or bad.
This is how I feel about it also. I confess that I have enjoyed ganking players of ill repute in other games, mainly because their attention-seeking behavior got on my last nerve.
It’s sort of like being pleased when the police pull over a driver who’d been a menace to other drivers. I’m just glad to see them get what they deserved and that’s all.
I’d wager there’s a lot of players out there, maybe even the majority, who think “I love MMOs, but not a lot of the people who play them”. And that’s why I’m glad GW2 has anonymous enemies in WvW.
You guys know that if you click on the report option, you can see the name, so its not as anonymous as you think…
you can see what guild kills you
thats all you need
this game is Guild Wars not 1v1 player wars
Also badly need realm points.
I personally want to see names of the other dude as well, if only it promotes a sense of rivalry that keeps things interesting. I particularly want to know that asura whom I chased around a lot on the blue BL the other day, as well as that dude who was trying to outswim me when I killed him in the water, then 1 of his friend showed up and I killed him too, then another one came while the 2 were still in the downed state, and by the time I nearly killed the 3rd one, the first got back up and rezzed the 2nd one and I got smoked when a further 2 people came running over the hill T.T

I prefer it to stay the way it is. Plus, when you think of it in terms of bandwidth, the client only needs to know which side a player belongs to (a byte max) as opposed to a string of characters for a name (which depending on compression can be rather large)… per player.
Various other classes for figuring out how to kill em (thief, warrior, mesmer, etc…)

You know, there is already a way to see people’s names and even message them. All it takes is 2 seconds.
So. I feel it is kind of pointless to hide people’s names after discovering that.
Especially when Anet goes around slapping people’s wrist for calling out a server instead of an individual when it comes to hack usage. How are some suppose to know any better when all they see is “Server name invader/defender” as the hacker’s name?

I like the anonymous part aswell.
It makes pvp less personal, you dont start to hold grudges against that thief that kills you over and over again because you dont know his name, sure it takes out somewhat a social part, but to be really honest: how much interaction do you have with people from other servers beside WvWvW anyways?

That’s exactly why names SHOULD be shown. There’s a distinct of any kind of meaningful community in GW2 besides SOME people on your own server that bother to visit websites dedicated to their server, if they even have one. It’s a PvP mode, healthy rivalries should be encouraged. Being anonymous is good and all but not to the point where you don’t care who hunted you down 15 times in a row.

But why do you need this rivality for a certain player?
You got the guildname and the server, imo that serves enough potential.
Other than that, there is still sPvP, not sure tough wether thats world-wide or just within a server since i barely play sPvP
I think if you bring this personal point into WvWvW, its going to be even more a flame war than a fight on the battleground.
I see only one positive effect on showing names in WvWvW, that would be reporting exploit-abusers and hackers.
