Just because a server is high population does not mean they all do WvW.

Anet I highly suggest you put in some sort of function that allows you to see a server’s WvW population. So small WvW servers don’t have to get matched up against monster servers that have triple their numbers. I’m in Anvil Rock and I’m against Gate of Madness and Fegusun’s Crossing. The Fergies have similar numbers to us, Gates of Madness usually has zergs triple the size of ours and dominates everything. This isn’t even fair.

(BTW, stop camping the EB jumping puzzle with a zerg of thirty and sitting there too. Literally super annoying, I simply don’t have the numbers to go up and remove you so I just wont get badges of honor I guess…)

WvW population is not factored in to the matchmaking system at all, and the jumping puzzle is a pvp zone, so deal with it.

If you are unwilling to fight for the badges of honor, you are undeserving of those badges.

Get people together and invade a map. Give them a reason to not be in the JP. They are most likely bored.

Unless they separate WvW from the rest of the game, it’ll be useless to do this. If a server is entirely full from a PvE population, then its more a “no room on the server” issue, than a “we don’t want this server to have WvW” issue.

Also, in general, the tiers are mostly tiered by population, barring transfers. Its really transfers which shake things up, and it takes a while for those to stabilize. The new system can actually help a bit with that, when it gets employed properly. But who knows, maybe in the future they could include a weighting factor somewhere in the calculation of rating that has to do with the population of that server vs the average WvW population.

Their handling of WvW is really confusing indeed, and as someone above touched upon, a separation of PVE servers/WvW servers (or affiliations) might not be as outlandish as it sounds at this point.
WvW is mode that by design favors intense player tribalism and generally a hardcore PvP mentality (for one thing, the massive, hour long queues by themselves probably deter 95% of might-be casual players, or the discipline and voice comm required), with the guise of being a “casual” game mode with a huge PVE-er cross-section (those miniscule bonuses nobody cares about or remembers that they exist, the random PVE events, etc.). But as we all know after a year, that’s not the case. WvW is driven by it’s dedicated guilds and daily players. On my mid-ranked server, I always see the same faces and the same guild tags.
The connection to the PVE-side of the game is tenuous at this point.

This was only a short analysis that I might elaborate some time in a thread itself. The main topic of this thread was pop imbalance and I agree that this needs to be hands down the biggest factor in match-ups. You don’t let a football team of 11 play against one of 8 players, even if every player is on the same skill level.
And thanks to the missing connection to the PVE-side I addressed, WvW populations probably won’t boostrap themselves out of their current levels.
You really need to make WvW either more about the PVE-side of the server to get some new player flowing in, or much less (i.e. separate them).

theoretically, a server’s rating is supposed to handle this. naturally, a server with a low population won’t do as well as a server with a high population, and the ratings are supposed to reflect this.

the new matchup system has done a lot to improve the quality of the ratings, and allow servers to move up and down the rankings as their strength changes. for example, Anvil Rock recently lost a lot of players when one of their large WvW guilds transferred to Dragonbrand. as a result, AR’s rating has been falling dramatically in the past 2 weeks.

it may take another week or two for AR to settle into their new rating. at that point (theoretically) they will generally get good matchups against similar-strength opponents.

the caveat here is that good matches can only be made when it’s possible to do so. there are 24 servers in NA and 27 in EU, and every single one of these servers needs to be put into a match every week. this means that for “good” matchups, servers with similar populations and strengths need to be found in groups of three. that doesn’t always happen.

for example, look at the bottom 2 servers in EU, FoW and Vabbi. they have very low WvW populations, far lower than any other EU server. it is not possible to find a third server that’s a good match for them because no other server in EU has that low a population. so another server that might have a better match has to play them instead (because somebody always has to fill that third spot) even if the best match for that server might have been someone else.
