I know that this subject has been talked before in some grade in this forums. But my entry is to focus in WvW where is more imperative to fix something soon.

I understand that European label [EU] doesn’t mean english speaking, and I respect the right of everyone to be able to speak whatever language they want while playing.

But when coordination is a must, read WvW, it’s imperative that everyone speaks a language that can be understood. If not it all ends in chaos and failure, which is bad for everyone ( loss of server buffs, clashes between players of the same server, etc ).

As it seem that for some people to speak english is real hard ( the language that almost everyone knows, if not they wouldnt understand the game ), whatever reason they have ( for being from an oppressed nation, they religions forbids to speak english on MMO, etc ). I think I have a good solution for everyone ( and quite easy to implement )..

The developers could add some tags that like the wp or items they are translated instantly to the language of the client. Mainly keywords ( [defend], [attack], [gather together], [regroup], etc. ). And let only those ones be the only option, or at least the preferred for WvW. So everyone would be able to understand orders and act as one.

I have used system like that in other games, and I was able to even discuss complicated tactics with japanese people. So it works.

Have you tried using the linking system? As in, shift click a POI at a tower, or a WP in a keep.
People catch on to the attack/defend idea or whatever is needed pretty quickly with that.

We have a large spanish speaking population on my server, and we get through the language barrier that way sometimes.
Just a thought.

Nice post ^^ I totally agree.
Atm. we struggle a lot on Blacktide server. Many of our key members are thinking of leaving server because 75% of all mapchat in WvW are Polish.
It’s confusing and makes it hard to keep people on the server.. or even get them to the server, as I have seen posts here about Blacktide and many polish guilds have claimed Blacktide a polish server.
I don’t mind polish people at all, but I find it very disrespectful to only use the native language in public chat. It makes it hard to work together in WvW.

Whats your problem?
I play on a german server.
Here, there’s players using the german names, players using the english names, players with german localisation trying to translate the names to horrible english and players with english localisation trying to translate the names to german.

the linking system s nice actually, USE IT!

Yeah that’s fine if people want to be understood by others. But just to give you an example, in BlackTide theres a lot of people from certain country that even knowing english, don’t want to use it in map chat in WvW. Not even for givin simple orders as attack or defend.

Askin why they don’t, they just answer that this way all the people that doesn’t speak their language will go to other servers.

So unless they are forced to use some system that allow everyone to use a code that everyone can understand, they won’t.

And in my opinion, arguments and reports are not the solution.

With my suggestion it would be as simple as [defend] [x tower] [hurry], or 10 [invaders] [keep z]. Of course the point of my idea is to improve the linking system to a WvW battle code.

This is one of the things that FFXI got right in a big way. It is played in Japan, US, and Europe (UK, Germany and France) as well as other countries. The game contains an autotranslator with hundreds of words and phrases in English, Japanese, French and German. Players just enter the tag for translation from one language to another, and the game takes care of it.

GW2 would benefit from a similar system – especially WvWvW on the higher tier servers since they use 24/7 coverage involving guilds from many different timezones.

everyone who plays online games should understand a [server] inc at [location] from[location].
It’s not like I don’t know what you are talking about.
I played enough DotA and still do to know how painful it is to have russians in the team who don’t speak a single word of english.
You just gotta learn to deal with it. If they clutter the chat, put them on ignore. At least, it’s GW2 and not DotA. A few guys who cannot communicate won’t destroy your team… Because, well, your team has more than 5 members :>

Naphack: Well it do destroy it on Blacktide server, that’s why many are leaving server. If you go WvW, more than 75% Mapchat are in Polish and if you ask polite for English, you get trolled. Many can easily communicate simply tactics, but refuse to do so.

But I can’t put in ignore most of the commanders of my server ( the only ones that speak in english are the commanders from my guild ). The fact is as said before in my server polish population is over 40%. And in WvW, polish are almost the only ones due that other people stop playing because of this situation.

In fact even been a very high populated server, most of the time there are few people in WvW, and all of them talkin in polish. We are beaten most of the days by servers that have few population.

Imo that should be solved, due that a few people can’t go against all the others.

then thats a problem with the playerbase of your server and not with the system.
Applying a complex linguistic system just for your server? Not gonna happen.

Applying a simple system which allows players to communicate regardless of language by using predefined keywords?
Not gonna be used.

As simple as that.

^^ This. Keep in mind that the place names have different names depending on the language settings. For example, Dreadfall Bay is Bahía Salto Aciago in Spanish, Baie du Noir déclin in French, and Schreckensfall-Bucht in German. Shadaran Hills is Colinas Shadaran in Spanish, Collines de Shadaran in French, and Shadaran-Hügel in German.

So if you just type stuff like “Bay” and “Hills” in /map or /team chat, a non-English speaker may not know what you are referring to. When you link the POIs and WPs, the game automatically translates the names to the other languages. It’s MUCH easier to work through the language by linking POIs and WPs instead of just typing the names/nicknames.

The asian commanders on Dragonbrand tend to know enough English to use basic keywords like “push”, “stack”, “hide”, etc. and link waypoints pretty frequently. In addition to listing their commands in WhateverAsianDialectTheyUse as well.

You obviously don’t get a full breakdown of their strategy in teamchat, but it’s enough to follow them and be useful.

If the Polish people on Blacktide refuse to do this, I would not consider them good teammates to begin with.

As simple as that.

If this one would be my first MMO, I would belive you. But as long as I played other MMO, with systems like that, I can promise you that it works and it’d be used.

In fact for example in Final Fantasy XI I’ve seen players using a system like I told you even to discuss about other subjects, or to flirt…

And my request would be to force everyone to use it as main order system in WvW. Like is done for example in shoot’em up online ( battlefields, counter-strike, etc. )

That way there would no arguments, no clashes, an even with servers where some players groups trying to bully other players, it’d be solved.

If you’re on the unofficial Polish server, why not try to learn a little Polish so you can figure out what’s going on? Because it works both ways. If you’re on a server with two primary languages, both demographics should reach out to the other and try to pick up the basics of each other’s language. On Sorrow’s Furnace, the English speakers link locations for the Spanish speakers. And the Spanish speakers link locations for the English speakers. We have some amazing Latino commanders who know English and are able to bridge the gap. And us English speakers have also made attempts to poorly translate commands using tools like Google Translate.

When both sides refuse to bridge the gap, it just makes it even more difficult to work together. I’m thrilled to be on Sorrow’s Furnace, as it gives me an opportunity to brush up my Spanish. Perhaps you can treat this as an opportunity to learn a little Polish?

Manoa, we didn’t picked an unofficial Russian/Polish server, but an English server, things just going this way, because many polish guilds claim Blacktide to be Polish, and refuse to use other languages in Mapchat. a bad circle, we are losing members to other servers like this..

Manoa I’ve been playing a lot of MMO ( UO, DaoC, FFXI, EQ2, AoC, etc ), and never found anything like that. In all before we used to speak english and/or the tag system.

My mother tongues are catalan and spanish, I can speak with more or less proficiency English and German, I also speak a little italian and french. I’m now learning swedish and finnish.

So I like to learn languages, but these last weeks I’ve tryin a bit with polish but it doesnt seem to be my point. What if in a month there is an avalanche of Finnish, and it turns into the future Finnish unofficial server ( in the past Blacktide was the italian unofficial server ).

And imo if this server is tagged as International EU server, english should be the vehicular language ( at least is the language that most of european youth study as second language ). But seems that Arenanet doesnt think the same way. And as there are this issues with some groups of players I belive the tag system would be the only solution ( as it has been proved in other games ).

If we all just would learn Esperanto….

The idea of the tags (or apply the linkin’ system to WvW) is precisely that, everyone would understand it, even if they translate the game to Swahili or in Arameic. Everyone would read the tags in their language. So noone has to learn anythin’.

In fact, the programmin’ part of it is quite easy, just increase the DB that they already use. And maybe add a “commands/orders” menu in WvW like in most of shoot’em up.

To make it more fancier you could even assign a sound or a voice to the command. It would make the battles more immersive.

After thinkin’ in this system a bit, it’ll even make more faster and powerful the WvW, because the orders would be faster ( you wouldn’t even have to type all the letters if you use predictive text ).
