Sorry to ask a dumb question but how do i get a chest from my ranks before the patch? is it even possible?

Players who gained World Rank prior to the chests being added will receive 1 additional chest per rank gained until they have received a number equal to the ranks they had gained previously.

Let’s say you are Rank 5. From now on you get two chests each time you rank up till you hit Rank 10. From there on you will only get one chest per rank.
