Every time my guild takes a keep, we do a ‘sweep’ to remove any mesmers. This is now a ritual – part of the normal process of keep taking.

The reason, of course, is to stop mesmers hiding, then portaling in invaders onto the wall.

Simple question: is hiding and portaling people into a keep considered an exploit, or is it using a skill in a legitimate way? It is not taking advantage of any glitch – and is using a skill exactly as described: to transport people from one place to another. But it does bypass gates, which are obviously an integral part of WvW.

I am honestly unsure whether it is considered an exploit or not. Has there been a ruling on this?

That is not an exploit, but intended use of the ability.

If the Mesmer managed to stay hidden. Then it’s a tactical advantage. Unlike Mesmer portals that cause invisible players do to culling; which is an exploit. This is a fair tactic. That is the entire point of the portal.

It’s not an exploit, but people like complaining about it and are quick to call it cheating.

Well… you should differ a little bit.

Portaling over walls is fine (if the mesmer got their legally).

Actually this post is almost a month old, but it state that the portal works as intended by they might make it not bypassing walls (I guess they mean undestroyed walls).

OK. Good. This game has me a little nervous as to what is considered exploiting or not…

ArenaNet said to people exploiting some movement-behavior or unintended positioning that they were clever and they should have expected this… so basically this means that most things that are based on clever skill-usage is fine and if it isn’t they will fix it.

At least in this regards they did what they said (like fixing Caudecus Way 2 and such).

Actually, I wouldn’t call portaling people who then get invisible due to the stupid culling mechanic an exploit. At least not unless you call grouping up so many people that some of them get invisible due to the culling an exploit too.

In fact, using the portal to get a group of people to a location you enemies don’t expect them to be is the main purpose of it, you can’t call it an exploit just cause Arena Net implemented some gamebreaking mechanics.

Actually using something you have discovered to be gamebreaking that Anet put in the game is the definition of an exploit. Essentially if it is gamebreaking they did not intend it to be used that way.

Someone who abuses something they know to be gamebreaking and doesn’t think it’ll be fixed or they will suffer repercussions will inevitably be a whiner when it does get fixed OR their account gets smacked down.

All a portal does is move people from point A to point B, you can’t use it for anything else. If people are portaling to a place they shouldn’t be then the exploit lies with how the Mesmer got there in the first place.

The mesmer hides and the group taking the keep does not take care to clean it out. That is how it happens. Not a game exploit. Just a cleaver and sneaky use of skills.
