Class imbalance in WvW
I can always find a spot/role for every class in my groups.
Guardians can tag the most ppl in a large fight(read: easy to get loot). They are very durable and overall can be versatile. You can never have too many.
Underplayed and needed? Mesmer and to a lesser extent staff ele on the server/timezone I play.
Skritt Happens
Guardians while not OP, have the abilities available to them that most groups look for. There are so many of them because its arguably the most useful class with the most utility in the game. That and they can fulfill several different roles (most classes can do this but not to the extent of the Guardian).
Needed and viable … pretty much all classes but your always safe with Necro’s, Ele’s, Mesmers, Warriors and of course the Guardian.
my GM annoys the hell out of me to reroll guardian or necro…
but i love my thief except they suck in zergs :x

It depends what you want to do.
Zerging:
Warriors are the strongest class, followed by guardians. Mesmers, eles, and necros are really important. The other classes aren’t too important. Should engis get aoe stability as rumored, they will immediately jump to crazy OP.
Roaming:
Thieves, mesmers, warriors, and eles are the best.

mesmers important…hmmm yeah for portl/veil/tw right so all passive stupid support, because we have a lack of aoe, stability, and condition cleansing.
all u see in wvw atm is warriors, warriors and then warriors again and then there is guardian and necro next and the eles then engis are great to and thieves of course
then rangers and mesmers are a utilitybot for the warriors and the guardians and then they are allowed to feedback and tw and then veil again they dont need a build they are just a support that need a little toughness to help the warriors getting lootbags..

Each class has an important part to play, however, not everyone has yet to imagine a way to implement them in a team since it isn’t easy to suggest characters to members, or players are willing to gamble with something new.
That being said, guardian is a stellar choice, but if you like flashy stuff, elementalist is the way to go. ;3
Always Loyal
The only imbalance that exists in WvW is between classes that can tag easily and thus get great loot drops/rewards, and those classes that cannot tag easily and thus get diddly squat.
So at one end of the spectrum you have aoe auto attack spamming guardians who can wade through hellfire and back without breaking a sweat, and on the other is mesmer who hasn’t the aoe capability, mechanics, nor base DPS to even remotely hit the same.
The problem here isnt necessarily the classes, but how the tagging system is designed. Broaden what it means to have “tagged”, and the problem is solved. Then, who cares what class you play. Guardians will retain their 100% tagging power, and Mesmers will tag 100% of the time too.
Simple solution, if someone provides boons to another person, and that person tags and kills an enemy, the person who provided the boon also gets credit. That way for those people who like to play the support mule can get credit as well.
That’s madness!
Play what you want and have fun doing it!
In WvW every class has plenty of stuff they can do. Sure there are the metas like the stun-locking warriors, but I have run with and fought all sorts of fun and interesting builds that rocked in their own way. Sure there are also the occasional players that always seem to get steamrolled no matter what they do, but that is not as common as these forums may get you thinking.
Also duly note that just because someone runs one of the so called top builds does not mean they are in anyway a good player. Just because you may have arranged your traits based on some meta-build you found will not make you a top player, it may help, but you yourself have to be good at playing this build.
If you find a build boring and not fun for you to play, do not play it, simple. This is a game, and games are supposed to be fun. If the game is not fun, stop playing, and do some other task you find not fun that would also be productive, like maybe studying, or doing a project for work you have been putting off. Then when you want to have fun and relax, play the game… and have fun and relax.
Just my 2 cents
BTW the last concept seems awfully foreign to some people, so if you find it obvious I am not trying to be insulting.
Guardians has the most important suppourt for wvw – aoe stability
next patch on 15th is class balance patch and engineer will become aoe stability too – on 1 elixier – so maby this is something for you (underplayed but important)
warrior is most op class ingame atm and not only in wvw – they do most dmg in pve, they are most faceroll atm in spvp and in wvw they are just juggernauts
when arenanet really care somehow bout classbalance they have to nerf warrior soon and hard – no other options for this
so would not start this class
staff eles can bring some supoourt in wvw but are boring – other specs useless cause other classes can do it better
mesmer you will only be usefull when golem action or hide in towers – boring
atm in wvw only warrior, guardian , necro and all others useless and a waste of boons
There is an absurd amount of crowd control in this game. Guardians have stability. Rolling one means you get some relief from bieng stunned, knocked down, dazed, slowed, immobilised… usualy all at the same time. Its no wonder people roll one. Without them WvW would be unplayable.

You must REALLY hate warriors then
I find it funny how long folk said Mesmer or Thief were the “OP” class for WvW. Meanwhile, Guard’s utility/defense/healing has always been extremely BA. And Warrior … what do Warriors lack, pray tell? AoE/Cleave abilities – check. Interruption/hard CC – check. Speed /Maneuverability – check. Luscious Health – check. Good condi-clear/health regain – check. Still tagging and bagging in a Zerg – check.
Meanwhile … the two so-called “OP” classes of yore are best as solo or small-group
combatants, especially Thief. Although, SB Thief can bag n’ tag with the masters.
Gonna be mighty fun to see who the top dogs are after this next patch.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior

I know, I hate those… greatsword/hammer/mace/shield/sword/warhorn/longbow warriors too.
You know what I mean, Player Character. Mes/Thief have always had the same kind of accusations tossed out on them. And, frankly … it’s not hard for any class to carry all possible weapons and swap ’em around out of combat.

Sounds more like he’s trying to build a hammer train, not exactly meta. Mesmers also made both lists, and really a guardian is not something anybody enjoys 1v1’ing.
im tired of being a veilbot really boring and no i dont wanna reroll a warrior or a guardian, necros are no my style. soe why do i have to give up the class i love, because anet fails at balancing wvw the right way?
im not a roamer i wanna be part of the fights, but being abused as an extra utility bot for the warriors and guardians and necros is ridiculous. ugh anet stop balanciing aroun spvp 1v1. go join a t2 server and fight the hammer/guardiantrains with your mesmer…and while you are at it enjoy the server imbalance next to the class imbalances.

Ye Selan the thing i find is that WvW is fun to play in a zerg until people suggest for you to build correctly for it, and since i want to be useful i go ahead and do it, but then i find that the build that works best is the most boring build ever.
So i stopped caring and built the way i wanted while still grabbing the staples like Staff for Guardian. The only time i’ll build correctly is when i do guild runs, if at all.
Thief is completely useless outside of trolling stragglers. They should have more of a role in zergs.
Anet doesn’t care about balance!!! Start a warrior, face-roll your keyboard, done.
You can never have too many.
Doesn’t this counter everything you just said before it and only reinforce the OP’s topic?

This is an issue in every part of the game, dungeons especially.
What made Gw1 so awesome was that everyone COULD have access to knockdown protection … but it always required a sacrifice in other utilities. Infact the main self-induced source, linked to “Tactics”, was considered a pretty useless Attrib line for most of the game’s life and was easily countered with Stance-Breakers.

you guys are also forgetting something very important. Staff 1 = bags.
Warrior or Guard with hammer and follow all the other warrior and guards with hammers, it seems to be the thing.
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
It’s not really OP as it is profession roles.
Guardians excel at zerging. Without guardians in your zerg, you won’t get anything done. Same with eles.
You also have your roamers, thieves and mesmers notably. Most classes either have a particular role they are exceptional at or are decent at all roles. There isn’t a class that excels at everything.
I have no problem taking out guardians or warriors on my thief. No issues, even though I don’t use the scrub perma stealth build.

well warrior in its current state fore sure comes close to the excel at everything.
the roles are there, but its not ok that mesmers for example have to be only there to veil the warriors and guardians, while sitting in the backline. yes, we are a light armor class, but a little boost to our aoe abilities would be nice so we can nuke from the backline too.
light armor should be a little more in the back or middle field i think, but therefore we do need more viable aoe access.
its frustrating to be a utility bot. eles have aoe, necro have mass condition aoe… now mesmers need some form of better mesmer like aoe and it will be fun again.

Hey guys returning player planing to make a new character for WvW but everyone and there uncle seems to be a Guardian.
Is there a reason for this?
Id prefer to play a class that is needed/viable but underplayed any suggestions?
Lack of boon duration Nerf, basic immunity to damage abilities, the Nerf of corrupt boon and the ease of playing the guardian class lead to outrageous and broken survivability. I stopped playing my guardian a long time ago because the class is a boring keyboard faceroll one.
Any competitive small groups run 2 boon guardians. Always needed in zergs for aegis spam, aoe prot, aoe stab. The class will be vwven more broken in wvw come mid Oct.
As for a needed class, good dedicated cc wars are hard to find. On my server, at least.
Thief is completely useless outside of trolling stragglers. They should have more of a role in zergs.
Spamming blast finishers (if you have a Zerg that knows what it’s doing having the ability to spam a blast finisher can be really useful). You can apply AOE stealth, blindness, poison and weakness (with the right moves). Or just spam other people’s fields.
Shadow refuge on a downed ally to get them up can make the difference between winning and losing a fight. And you can often down and finish a weak opponent and get out again, in situations where they might have been healed back up by allies.
And as the fastest class in the game with the easiest escapes, they make excellent scouts. You might not get as many bags or WXP as a scout, but your commander will appreciate it.

agreed. my thief does just fine in zerg. then again I don’t use permastealth as a crutch like scrubs do.

I wouldnt call someone who plays a different style from you a scrub, that just sounds like you have some pent up tears from fighting a enemy you didnt like. I roam and dont rely on perma stealth in either of my thief builds, and I dont zerg much so i dont have as high as rank as some of my zerg happy friends, but thats the life of a thief at times. SB is great in a zerg tho.

Lol, I did the perma stealth build for a few weeks, and it’s just way too easy. No challenge at all. I consider it an exploit, hence my derisive attribution to that style of play. It gives the thief class a bad rap.
World vs World and balance in the same sentence will never make sense.
Gear/Stats is way out of hand, and food buffs that grant 40% increased condition duration exist. Thats 10% more than 30 trait-line points.
WvW will NEVER be balanced even the slightest. Just play whatever seems interesting.
Zaphiel Faires – DPS Guardian
just download all the extra mod’s for guildwars you will never lose a match ever again..
I love it when a commander tells people, "hey they only have 39 supplies in their keep and their Ac’s are on 2 minutes before despawning, they have 18 people on the map and all of them are in the north, lets attack " !!!without scouts!!!
So i used google and…. well.. just use google to win..
E.A.D.
The OP is wanting suggestions for a fun class to play in WvW, here’s my input, and I have one of everything. Each class has it’s own niche that it excels at, be it boon/cc guardians, cc/damage warriors, confusion mesmers, and so forth. The class I personally am having the most fun with currently is the Engineer. Quite a bit of versatility and good survivability. You want support, ok, elixers are great, aoe damage, grenades. They have a great deal of varied utilities and kits, and with the upcoming patch that will take some of the rng out of their abilities, they become even more viable. Like the Ritualist from GW 1, they are capable of filling most roles, maybe not as good as a class dedicated to it, but still capable.
The saga of your life is a summation of the choices you make.
I’ve played Thief, Mesmer, Ele and Guardian.
Conclusions: (mine):-
Thief is no use at all in group play. I don’t like sneaking round trying to gank people -it’s boring as hades. Might be useful for spying but you’ll get no loot.
Elementalist – d/d is fun but the big demand is for staff Ele. support – which is dull and uses a lot of clumsy ground targeting.
Guardian – If you like loot – go for it. It feels real good to wade into a zerg knowing you can’t be harmed and slaughter the lot.
OTOH – on your own, you’re clumsy and vulnerable – worst class ever to attempt a 1v1.
Mesmer – my current favourite. It’s fun to confuse enemies so that they run around trying to find you while your illusions kill them. Good at 1v1, deadly in a small group.
Can be viable in a big fight because of it’s evasion and escape abilities. Poor loot though, it’s got no AoE.
It’s only a utility to guardians and warriors if you let them tell you what to do – simple answer, just don’t.

Well everyone and theyr mutt is playing guardian because of the op aoe cleansing healing and condition flipping.
Anet hasnt realised how bad they doing on that because they havent seen a mass of guardians scoff at 2 cannons firing at them while the cannons beeing fully specced into cannon+siege might+2700 condition dmg.
This is bound to get worse in ten days from now when guardians will get passive aoe cleansing.
I would say you could try to play engineer or necromancer since both are viable .
At the least if you can find a good spot with engi you can spam more conditions than what an average person can handle.
If you see a gear above my head……run
If you see me Offline, its totaly not a trap
my GM annoys the hell out of me to reroll guardian or necro…

No…I can usually outrun a warrior. All my skills work on them, they cripple nicely. I hit a thief with everything I have, to include my elite and his stealth cleanses/heals and sets him up for crazy damage. Try interrupting a Thief’s finishing blow when you are down…they go stealth and only reappear when you are dead with a cow sitting on your face.

Thieves can be great in group play if you don’t rely on the scrub builds that give permastealth.
