Commander - A PvE Title
Thats basicly what I feared. More and more buy the title, but aint “elected” to it due to performance.
And lets quickly forward GW2 6 months forward. I bet you gonna see 10-20 commanders on the map trying to command an army of 5.
Its another of those things ArenaNet didnt think through.

should remake the commander to guild leaders only might work better for the pvp guilds out there.
right now the commander title is only a title given to those that either bought gold online in Tradepost or offsite/ exploited imo
100g ? this early well might be doable but i just dont see how
100g is perfectly doable (without exploits, using goldsellers or power trading). But thats not the point. Most commanders are plain incompetent or just want to brag with their icon.
Exactly remove it and remake , let the guilds farm or trade cash to place there Guild master as a commander if they are a PvP or PvE guild but that should keep the incompetence down perhaps
Yeah I mean my main point is that it is a PvE earned title that is effecting PvP, which leads to what Malediktus said.
The people who have the title might be good at earning money, or PvE’ing but a lot of them are not good in PvP and think because they have a blue icon they are better than everyone else which so far has just added to the chaos.
Step 1: Introduce ‘WvW Influence’ for guilds to accumulate via participating in WvW activity
Step 2: Add guild perks which can only be acquired through spending WvW influence, one of which is the ability to designate a commander.

Yes for the love of God please do this. I just don’t get how soooooooooooo many people can complain about this, ask for a unique but difficult way to get commander, but Anet has not responded or given any kind of notice to this at all that we’ve seen. We would just like to know if you guys have plans to make it not gold related or something. I mean anything at all here would be nice, even if it is going to be down the line. I am already sick of seeing commanders who just stand there and do NOTHING in WvW but literally stand in place AFK, or worse, give ridiculous orders that have no thought or strategy behind them at all.

That’s what a commander skillbook gives you, is the ability to command a ‘squad’.
BlueOrange is right, it does allow you to make raid groups, if (and I hope this happens) they take commander from those who bought it and change it to a achievement based award, I do not think they should take their ability to form raid groups.

and everyone is just sick of it, but no one else can suggest a strat without a few people trolling them who are following the commander.
So we are left right now in chaos because of a stupid blue icon.
Last night alone we were ROCKING WvW with no commanders…a single commander got on and started barking orders and we lost 4 bases.
This really doesn’t make sense. To be a commander, all one has to do is get 100g. It should be changed and be earned via achievements, such as, “Siege X number of Towers, Keeps, Castles”, etc…
Any pugger can hang around a tower as it’s being sieged.

It seems there are others who agree with us.
The title right now for all purposes is a PvE title and earning it has nothing to do with PvP.
I’m not against Commander should get earned but what makes you think that PvP achievement farmers will be a better commander/leader compared to gold farmers? Of course people that WvW more will know more about WvW however this won’t keep them:

After all I’m 100% sure that any guy spending 100 gold to that title, already play too much WvW. Otherwise they would spend their money else where.
With an achievement system, WvW might get filled with 16 years old commanders which play 10 hours per day to get it. It’s gonna be a title, not a tool. Please consider that.
Right now a guild with proper amount of players can buy that book to a guy they trust and want to follow. But with an achievement system, all commanders will be achievers not leaders.
EDIT: Perhaps something like getting commander as a guild upgrade which is really hard to achieve might be a good solution.

At least that random pugger is actually in WvW. As it is now, someone can buy Commadner without ever even being in WvW and be completely clueless when they do enter one.
There’s at least one newbish Commander on Maguuma who has no clue what he’s doing. Doesn’t even know the maps (had to ask where the entrance to tkitten puzzle was), the zerg is attracted to him yet it ends up leading him around and often having no idea what was actually going on or where the zerg was going next. Had no clue how to organize assaults, leaving it to other pugs to try and organize it for him.
I see him constantly showing off the icon in Lion’s Arch too, leaving me to believe he bought it for the novelty rather than actually wanting to be a competent Commander.

Anyway, expanding on someone else’s influence idea: Split influence into two types, PvE and WvW. Essentially Art of War upgrades would be bought through WvW influence, and Arena could add the Commander upgrade to Art of War.
But what else could remove 100g from players bank roll. Gold sink.

It’s not about the gold sink lol, the whole point is that a guild gets together, and everyone in it puts forth some money so they can get their guild leader(s) up into commander ranking and thus earn more respect and take control etc etc…

I’m just saying, they won’t remove something that effectively takes 100g out of the economy when it helps with gem sales.
I pretty much wrote off the value of the commander title when I noticed that not one of the commanders, or their guilds, were out in the WvW area fighting when we were losing. If you cant participate when we are struggling and need more people, then you are not worth following, imo.
That said, it is nice that the clueless have a blue diamond to follow, just to bad that its simply a gold sink.

You are right, but as of right now it’s split about 50-50 so it turns into people fighting among each other.
Half will state that we need to listen and the other half list the reason we have in this post mean while the “Commander” calls out targets and 70% of the time they are horribly wrong.
Like I said earlier, I think the commanders hurt more than help. I would rather a player do really well and become known on a server and start barking orders, like what happens in other game, or even just make it available by PvP achievements.
That way we all know they can call targets with a better understanding than someone who attacked a bunch of mobs, or killed at the trading post.
I literally had a commander saying in chat yesterday “I earned my gold at the trading post so that means I am smart, smarter than everyone else here so that’s why I can lead, because I am smarter than all of you” Keep in mind he used a max of 2 or 3 words per line and all caps.
I agree making the book either Guild upgrade to help the guild work together, also changing the icon to the guild emblem so that other people can still see them and follow if they wish, and also notice if a guild is around alot and does good work, they might ask to join the guild if they want to be more active in WvWvW.
if not Guild upgrade, Honor badges could work aswell as some have mentioned, but in the end..
The groups are limited to 20 so there isnt much of a point for the groups to be for public use.

I’ve seen and experienced both good and bad Commanders.
On the good side, I have had Commanders who are both active in chat and are always looking at the map, asking for status reports on locations, and not panicing when things dont go to plan but instead redirecting people to appropriate objectives.
And then I have had Commanders who are abyssmal and make me wonder why they even got the title to be begin with. Commanders who have no communication skills whatsoever, berate you if you make a CTA for a 5 man strike team. And in most cases these are just ‘lucky’ people who have had their tag paid for them by their guild members through no qualification other than being an Officer of said guild.
I can’t speak for any other servers, but on Henge of Denravi there are 2 good Commanders in my Prime-time (Australia) and 4 who are complete garbage and never get anything done.
I don’t think commanders should be limited by guilds or influence at all. Obviously, it being linked to cash is a problem, but things would be too limited if we started saying that commanders need to be in/come from bigger guilds.
Actually, I’d put ‘big wvw guilds being able to claim things’ up there with commanders in terms of problematic design decisions. Since once guilds begin to be able to say ‘this is -my- fort’ they attempt to control chat to convince everybody else to hold it at the cost of all else. Especially if it’s a keep. Even if the keep could be easily defended with the numbers it has, you’ll get big guild x spamming chat with defend orders even when other things are under attack and need defense just as much if not moreso. Innocent new-arrivals or yet unlearned players rush to the guild’s spam and…yeah, just as bad as the “I got money and now you must obey me!” crowd.
So, what do I actually suggest? Well, -keep- the 100g cost but make the book only purchasable after achieving a few different WvW titles. I can understand that ANet probably wanted commanders up fast so they could actually work on aspects of squads and such, but as things go on it is in everybody’s best interests that commanders are competent.
EDIT: Actually, why should squad-creation be limited to commander title at all? That would have been even better than -ever- allowing know-nothing or know-little commanders. Maybe I’m missing something, but do the current commanders even make squads?

I would love to see the ability to create a squad without the commander pin. Anyone can form a squad (squad leader) and have the same functions the commander has but without the visible pin.
Something that cany be used for multiple groups doing any activity either in PvE or WvW.
