I was thinking of letting the commander have some (auto)vocal commands; like “Fall Back”, “Retreat”, “Group up”.. that’d be nice and people will be able to keep on playing and be focused on the battlefield instead of the chat.

This is the type of upgrade to the system we will likely be making, but it is not a short-term project. We feel commanders aren’t getting enough mileage out of the system as it is now and we’d like to make it much, much more robust.

So… 7 months later with no changes. Other than the price to get a tag has gone up slightly.

Does that make this more of a “mid-term” project or has it graduated to “long-term” yet ?

The first GW2 beta weekend was April 27th to April 29th 2012. That’s roughly a month shy of TWO YEARS. After that beta weekend on the forums I recall extensive feedback regarding the ineffective grouping systems and concerns and suggestion about the C&S system. We’ve asked for the same thing every consecutive beta weekend, at release and still now.

We need a flexible grouping system that meets the need of all guild and player styles. A way to form private/guild only squads and tools to organize effectively.

You say we should stop complaining about things in WvW and commander abilites? It’s been almost 2 years… we should be complaining more.

In any event it was actually longer than 3 months for AB WXP saga. There were the months as well of just getting them to admit soulbound WXP was a silly idea.

My bad if i missed the sarcasm. It’s still an “F” grade though when it comes to grouping systems in GW2. It doesn’t bother me that they didn’t have a great grouping system in at release. What bothers me is they have left it unchanged since release and pumped out this crappy living story content every two weeks.

Many of the REALLY passionate gw2 players are those in WvW and they cater to the PvE crowd to earn gem store revenue. We’re not asking for massive changes here, just a flexible private grouping systems for players and guilds to organize properly.

Many of my old DAOC friends have stopped player due to the lack of meaningful WvW changes.

Remember, commanders make your game better to play. Paying 100 gold for a tag is a lot to ask of many people. Make it account bound, but simply require the character be level 80 to tag up. If more commanders, more people playing wvw. On borlis pass recently a lot of our drop in wvw population has come from losing major commanders.

It’s all about risk management. The “burn-down” board the scrums are working off of is being populated by deliverables that are chiefly valued by bean counters.

IMHO, we are live witnessing (here) the downward spiral of the latest in a long line…

People have traveled different paths to get here and many have witnessed splendor and innovation. For example, some have traveled through (some version of):

  • Lineage
  • EverQuest
  • Asheron’s Call
  • Anarchy Online
  • Final Fantasy
  • Eve Online
  • City of Heros/Villains
  • World of Warcraft
  • Star Wars Galaxies
  • Dungeons & Dragons Online
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • Age of Conan
  • Warhammer Online
  • Champions Online
  • Star Trek Online
  • Star Wars The Old Republic

…and some have traveled through them all (or even more that are not listed here).

Each reaches(ed) a plateau. RARE is it that any company can achieve the necessary support to push their (own) production product through a significant upgrade to the user experience.

I don’t deny that there are “tweeks” that enhance features that were not aligned with the original “cast in stone” (internal) expectations. I simply observe that the heritage player develops a sense of acceptance (akin to surrender) until a new innovation disrupts hir loyal play or that of the majority of hir friends.

Yes, gamers’ life and attention is limited. I would build on your statement and suggest that elite gamers’ tolerance and loyalty has explicit bounds. That boundary is influenced by both economic suitable substitutes and relationship gravity.

Game companies flirt with this risk when their product does not remain competitive in the entertainment market.

A year of waiting for a mature UI/UE for commanders is an eternity. That is a terribly long time for angst to build over stupidly simple things like chat suppression, pin colors, etc..

Add to that lag issues, rubber-banding, disconnects, and skill nullification — and the pump is primed for a mass exodus or population disruption as soon as the next mass combat offering is released.

To date, there has yet to release a “new” or “viable” (forward looking) alternative to WvW.

So, I agree, Ahmrill. Although, I fear the event horizon has already been crossed and gravitational forces will soon be ripping the elite community to another venue.

Yes, the decision to focus on living story and PvE aspect of the game for revenue purposes has effected the community. Many of my guild have left and are simply waiting for Camelot Unchained MMO or other PvP focused games in development. I too fear that meaningful changes to WvW are already to late.

It never fails to amuse me when the sPvP team point out that PvP numbers are huge! (because they include WvW in those numbers).

WvW is at the bottom of the priority list and Dev resource. They fixed culling and added the bloodlust mechanic… both good changes. EOTM was more a need for instanced solution for having seasons and events…. people would complain about the que and need an alternative.

The meat and potatoes of WvW have been ignored. We don’t even have the tools to organize in game properly. A 5 man group or a zerg is not flexible grouping.

Spot on. Apologists often give ANet skeptics kitten for saying the game is dying, which they may or may not have done, but that cliché exists because it’s just true: MMOs die fast, and I see zero signs that GW2 isn’t in the dying stage right now (like practically 99% of all that get released after ~2 years are), in the territories it’s been released in yet.
GW2 is not a unique snowflake in the MMO market. It’s just a regular snowflake that will melt to a warm breeze like all the other snowflakes.

I bought GW for what it was. I hope it improves, but I don’t put my enjoyment of the game on possible upcoming features and wishful thinking.

The next real test to WvW comes sooner than you think and it’s called Elder Scrolls Online.

Obviously Zenimax has crippled their offering with a P2P scheme, but the AvA is nevertheless intriguing and in many ways a step up from WvW. And not least by scale.

Like all those PRV trinkets that are now useless for my main since I learned placements? Well, will be usefull for rerolls until I learn placements (no need to go and get more)
Or want to try a build on another char with stats somewhat alike your main’s? go ahead!
You did ascended to roam with a char, but you now feel like roaming on another char most of the time? the option is open!

Even the new traits might shake the metta somehow, thus changing WvW gameplay…

We might not have much targetted changes, but things will sure move nevertheless…

For example ‘(auto)vocal commands’ and commander map chat dialogue menu can be the following:

We can only hope that the “friendly play” blogs are going to be about the C&S system or a way to group properly in GW2. Only two options to group in a modern MMO is a travesty. If you you enjoy running with just your guild or anything but a 5 man group or a public zerg we’ve been screwed since gw2 went live.

Not having the most needed feature, a flexible grouping system, on the big feature patch would really show how Anet feels about WvW.

Your suggestion of typing /stack, or /attack can be assigned as like emotes with voice and speech bubbles in game as well as in map chat. With alpha numeric keys however I don’t think there are enough of them for all the commander commands while still maintaining UI functionality as is.

I really did not meant as typing commander commands out. What I really meant is a drop down menu with a list of commander commands from which a commander can click up.

Except that it’s not minor. Something appearing in a text chat box (an emote notification) is a lot easier to ignore than an audio command being spammed ad nauseam over one’s speakers.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m in full support of the idea. But we still need the option to turn it off on a per commander basis for when (and it will be when, not if) the kitten trolls put the audio command on a macro and spam it incessantly such that you can’t even hear yourself think.

What’s more is – using your example – there’s already precedent for this. We can turn off emotes in text chat if we wish. I’m just asking we be given to the option to do the same when it comes to audio commands.

Cause I don’t see myself mouse-clicking commands, either would I take the time to type /stack, or /attack, or /hold, all the while looking at what happens on the field and how is my group doing against the enemi, and everything… assigning keys to it would be wonderful!.

Your suggestion of typing /stack, or /attack can be assigned as like emotes with voice and speech bubbles in game as well as in map chat. With alpha numeric keys however I don’t think there are enough of them for all the commander commands while still maintaining UI functionality as is.

I really did not meant as typing commander commands out. What I really meant is a drop down menu with a list of commander commands from which a commander can click up.

I would vote yes for a drop down menu, but also for an option to key bind these commands. In the heat of battle (where many of these commands would be used), a keybind will be a lot faster and more efficient to use than a drop down menu.

IMO the C&S system is the WORST grouping system I’ve used in the last 7 years of MMO gaming. Absolutely devoid of flexible grouping and organizing. If it’s not on the feature update….. I’m speechless. #1 feature that needs attention.

This is the type of upgrade to the system we will likely be making, but it is not a short-term project. We feel commanders aren’t getting enough mileage out of the system as it is now and we’d like to make it much, much more robust.

One of the most repeated suggestions that has been made is to allow us to set colors that aren’t used already on the map for our tags so we can have different commanders doing “jobs” (one havoc, one leading the pugs, et. al. ) so we can do the jobs we need to and have people just ask us which we are doing and then choose their roles.

Not everyone wants to zerg – and commanders are the only way to be “seen” by large groups of people since five people per group is the limit.

Which brings up another point: Why aren’t larger groupings allowed in WvW? Ten/fifteen/twenty (those are or’s) would make it so much easier not to have to worry about half your force not following because they don’t want to or can’t use TeamSpeak.

Know what would be awesome… if when I’m tagged I can double click on a location on the map or on a waypoint and my character shouts it.

Say I double click on the Jerrifers POI. My character would then shout “MOVE ON JERRIFER’S” with a voice over and also in the last chat I used (like team chat). This could have some extra features:
- Double clicking on a map location near me would make my character shout the cardinal direction. If i clicked north of my tag on the map she would say “FALL BACK NORTH!”
- If I’m inside a tower or keep and I double click on a location it uses the closest landmark. Double clicking on the lords room would make her say “REGROUP LORDS ROOM” or something to that effect
- Double clicking on a waypoint would make her shout “WAYPOINT to [Location]” with the location link in the chat. Clicking on that link would then ask the user if they want to waypoint instead of just showing it on the map.

This would have support for auctioneer style commands (repeating the command several times) with maximum 3 command repeat and a 15-30 command/minute suppression limit to prevent trolling.

I think the Commander system in GW2 needs a pretty big overhaul.

First of all, I think you should be able to purchase a PvE commander tag, and a WvW one. PvE one should require a certain number of hours played or achievement points or something. WvW one should require a certain WvW Rank. Make them 50 gold each so it’s not more expensive if you want both.

Secondly, they should be Account wide. Commanders are basically forced to play one character, or maybe 2 if they buy a second one.

Other changes:
– There should be a “/comm” command that lets commanders use Commander Chat. Different color and cannot be suppressed.
– They need a commander bar across the top of the screen that gives them access to “Stack”, “Moving out”, “Don’t attack”, “Stay on tag”, etc. Would make commanding groups via the chat much easier. The commands would appear in the /say but would be a different color of green
– They need different color tags, so they can put in chat “Yellow tag taking keep, blue tag flipping camps”
– /supplyinfo needs a larger radius or should show at all times at the top

There’s so many improvements they could make. Too many to list. Yet it’ll probably never happen.

Yes to a function that displays what professions are following a commander. Not much point in asking for a mesmer portal if there’s no mesmer following the commander, for example.

A big NO to armor and stat info. That’s no different than asking for an /inspect feature for dungeons. It becomes a mechanic to promote discrimination, elitism, and exclusivity (i.e Commander screaming: “Stop following me, you rally bots! Get some real armor and real skills before you enter WvWvW!”). Nope, nope, nope, and nope. I’m a commander, myself, and there’s no way I would want this ability in the game.

If that’s what you want, then work with your guildmates to optimize your WvWvW builds and run exclusively as a guild group. But just no to allowing commanders to inspect players’ armor and stats.

There’s so many improvements they could make. Too many to list. Yet it’ll probably never happen.

I especially like that last suggestion. Why even bother making us do a manual check in such a tiny little radius. Just give us a group supply indicator at the top of the screen that constantly updates based on how much supply is carried by all players within a certain radius of the commander (1200 perhaps).

Place this number to the right of the current “supply carried” counter; 10/124, for example. The first number is how much supply the commander is personally carrying, the second number is how much supply all players within the detection radius are carrying.

This carries another advantage, too. No longer having to type /supplyinfo (an advantage in itself), commanders would no longer see who – specifically – is carrying or not carrying supply. This would put an end to the name-and-shame tactic employed by less tactful commanders who publicly call out players who have zero supply or less than their carrying capacity. Who is carrying and who isn’t carrying aren’t what’s important. What matters is knowing how much supply, total, you have available to you as a commander so you can decide what siege to build and how many.

I agree it’s also important to know what your total supply capacity is, as well. That is to say, if there’s 30 players following you, that group has – at a minimum – a total supply capacity of 300. It’s important to know the ratio of current supply carried by the group versus their total capacity when making certain strategic decisions. Again, though, a commander doesn’t need to know this on a player-by-player basis; only what the overall ratio is.

In which case, it should be a simple matter to display this ratio at the top of the screen; 10/124/300, for example. The first number is the commander’s personal supply, the 124 is the supply currently carried by the group (within whatever radius of the commander is settled upon), and 300 is the total supply capacity of that same group. The numbers will dynamically update to reflect the changing supply levels in proximity to the commander.

in so many mmo ( wow , aoc , swtor , etc ) this option is for everyone . if this option is elitism then it is time for gw2 to be more elitist than casual female char theme-park mmo.

commander can judged and has consequences for his behavior . if he is rude nobody will follow him . if he explains why people will understand and they will be better and more useful for their server and for the other parties in a zerg.

commander as it is now the commander system is like he is walking in a tightrope where he don’t knows what people are follow him and IF they will follow him and are not afk somewhere in the map .

if i want to give 100 gold i want a system that covers at least my minimum needs as commander in wvw . i gave the 100 gold only for pve that it is very useful as it is now , because in pve ,i know that everyone is in berserker and i have only to keep them alive against npc attacks ( predictable )

even in a guild party somebody can use what ever he things it is better and not follow his guild leader order / needs , because there is no way from guild leader to validate that his guild member follows his orders.

happens ? most of the times and even the link of the gear can be with an armor in their inventory ( even in the best EU www guilds ! ) , because there is no way the guild leader to check his group current equipment .

p.s. as a guardian ( pug ) commander i want to know everything i said because i will be the first that will rally if the guardians in my group will not use the proper gear /traits in battle .

I won’t get into a discussion of this with you because you have your opinion and I have mine and neither of us are going to see it from the other’s point of view. What’s more is, both of our points of view are irrelevant because it’s ArenaNet who will decide what goes and doesn’t go into their game. They’ve made it abundantly clear in previous threads as well as their general design philosophy that an /inspect feature is not going to be added to the game.

An inspect on my characters will not tell anyone the full story.

I have a custom build/gear that works very well for my intuitive play, that stands up exceedingly well as part of my 4-man swat team taking keeps/towers (in the same amount of time it takes a zerg ), works very well in 1v1 (to many surprised thiefs and warriors) and contributes just as well in a zerg.

My guildmates also have custom specs/gear that do the same thing.

A first surface glance would see us all in pink gear and a build that is not cookie cutter and none of it would seem to make sense. A first surface glance would not understand the synergy that exists between the gear and the build.

A first glance would easily dismiss my entire guild.

If that happened, we would just go take a keep ourselves. And defend it.

I totally agree with Kraag Deadsoul, and countless others on multiple forums who believe that inspect has no place in this game.

/Inspect enables if not creates an environment that damages, degrades, and destroys community, as well as arguably both build and gameplay diversity.

My argument is that /inspect has no place in GW2 because the concept of inspect itself is fundamentally flawed.

In reality, the only real purposes that are served by /inspect are abusive and divisive. And an invasion of privacy.

I don’t bother looking because it’s irrelevant to me. I don’t care what they’re wearing or what their level is as long as everyone is having fun and feeling like they’re included as members of the server working towards a common goal.

Even so, we still manage to cap heavily defended fortifications and wipe zergs equal in number or even a bit larger than our own. All the while laughing and joking and having a great time in the game and on TeamSpeak without berating anyone or making them feel unwanted.

If other commanders want to pass judgement on players based on whether or not they’re uplevelled or running around in “trash” gear, that’s their business. Just know the game is not going to cater even further to such commanders by giving them an /inspect feature.

My responsibility – as I define it for myself – is to facilitate enjoyment of the game for those who choose to follow me rather than prop up my ego with “victories” in a video game at the expense of others. Based on how many players whisper me to flag on when I log into the game, the number of players who DO follow me, and our success rate in completing objectives in WvWvW, I’d say my approach is working quite well. All without the need of an /inspect function.

In short, get over yourselves. It’s a video game where everyone’s right to have fun is equal to any other’s. If you want to dictate to people what they can and can’t do, go down to your local military recruiting office, sign up, and work your way up the ranks to become an officer. If you lack the balls to do that, then realize you’re not going to get your way no matter how much you whine on the forums for an /inspect feature.
