Commander Abilities
In Commander CDI players answered easy question:
– do you want some easy fixes now or big fixes later?
And players answered, at least something like color tags now.
This was one of the first CDIs published (like 3 months ago) and dataminers discovered color tags in previous builds of game.
My question to Anet:
will there be any changes to commanders in Feature update?
Maybe just those color tags?
A year of waiting for a mature UI/UE for commanders is an eternity. That is a terribly long time for angst to build over stupidly simple things like chat suppression, pin colors, etc..
You my friend, are a scholar and a gentleman.

I wouldn’t expect much Dev response… not here. Probably get some on the PvE forums. As far as I’ve heard nothing commander related, but we’ll see on April 15th I guess.
It’s been almost two years since the first BWE. People complained loudly that the C&S system was devoid of flexibility and functionality. Almost 2 years…. that tells volumes about WvW priority and what players want.
Not enough gem store revenue in making a better grouping system apparently.
bump.
guilds NEED something with which to mark their drivers that isn’t publically visible. the reticle is supposed to serve as a target on an enemy. A red mark doesn’t mesh well with red enemy names either.
the CDI was very clear about players wanting this
bumb should be wvw dev teams next/current priority
You would think that something like this would be a priority when releasing a feature pack, especially since it has pretty much been universally requested by WvW players from day one.
Not really sure what to say anymore… I’m tired of players having to bring this up constantly.
I personally would prefer this over wardrobe
Charr Ger (Ranger OCAU)
Infantryman (Warrior OCAU)
Crystal Desert
The commander feature is basically a blue icon in head/map, with chat command to see supply, that every player can buy with 100g. Of course this need to change.
One of the easiest changes is just overwrite that blue icon with a color not similar to one of the 3 teams (towers icons) on WvW, like yellow or orange. Also, make a new one (different icon) that needs a WvW achievement (plus lot of badges) to get it.
I just want the commander icon deleted entirely, so I can watch the fallout in map chats.
RvR isn’t “endgame”, it’s the only game. Cu in CU.

The braindead chaos that would follow would almost be worth the loss of the 100g investment.

IKR?!
It would be a definitive end to that disgusting, “someone tag up” cry from people that will never experience being “tagged up”. I’m no nihilist, but I would get sick from eating popcorn.

Now we can look REALLY good and still not be able to group with guild members properly. We can fumble around targeting the good looking drivers now.
Just having a color change ability for the commander tag would help. Then the secondary commander could use another color. Or perhaps a secondary icon for captains that could color change. Your main Commander could always be The Blue Taco. But have a star or another icon for the Captains that could color change. Then you could look at your map and see that there is one main commander group but 2 smaller Captain groups with a red and a purple icon. Then If I know my Captains color I know where to find him easier.
A simple interim fix until the time, money, and resources are given to the WvW team to implement a more robust commander system:
- Allow commanders to change the color of their icon. This really shouldn’t take much effort. I would argue a programmer could have this done in a single 8 hour work shift (and that’s being generous).
- Guild members can see fellow guild members on the same WvW map as colored dots of a different color than the standard green. Party Member Blue would still be used to identify players in a party, overriding the new guild member dot color if guild members are in the same party. This will be limited to WvW and only while on the same WvW map. This is because I can see ArenaNet making the argument that they don’t want tyrannical guild leaders seeing the locations of all their guild members in PvE. Of course, the guild roster already tells you which map members are playing on; but not their specific location on a map.
- Party leaders now gain a unique icon visible only to members of the party. The party leader will be defined as the first player to invite others to the party. Other party members will be given the option to turn this icon off on their screen if they wish. If the party leader leaves, either the first player invited to the party becomes the new leader or the party simply reforms itself to set a new leader.
The above fails to give a commander granular in-game organizational tools specifically designed to better manage their squads. However, as an interim step, I think players would adapt this into a workable solution until something better comes along.
A simple interim fix until the time, money, and resources are given to the WvW team to implement a more robust commander system:
That’s just it… WvW changes don’t bring in revenue on the gem store. So if we’re waiting for resources and priority to be allocated….. don’t hold yer breath. We’ve asked for basic organizing tools for almost TWO YEARS since the first BWE. We haven’t had a short term fix yet and nothing in the horizon.

I know. Silly me. I shouldn’t get my hopes up. Hard not to, though, when looking at WvW and seeing this HUGE untapped potential which, unfortunately, is just going to waste. Instead, the time and resources get spent chasing that e-Sports pie-in-the-sky dream, the gem store, and Living Story.

I’m trying not to be pessimistic and sarcastic about WvW focus… but it’s hard. It’s so painfully obvious the lack of focus towards WvW. WvW is the main reason many players are still active in GW2.
Anet, listen to the player feedback we’ve been giving you for almost 2 years. We don’t expect everything asked to be addressed, but the common requests/needs should be addressed. I’m talking about core functions here, not new content.
Well the Gem Store does pay their bills. That said I agree that WvW is largely neglected. All it takes to see that is to look at the level of effort put into the living story vs into WvW.
It doesn’t take a year to develop new UI systems, commander/raid systems or new maps. If they’ve been taking longer than a year to work on it they weren’t working on it for half of that time.
Let’s just kill the Living Story so we can finally get some meaningful updates.
Well now that there have been changes to the commander tag i think its worthwhile keeping this thread going.
The new color system for tags is neat i guess, but still not the great overhaul that is needed to make it more functional.
It cant be that hard to implement a guild commander tag for raiding. just that in itself would have been a great addition

Yeah tge differnet color tags is as much a buff to pve as it is wvw. I wish they would give a more in depth interface to the tag
Darkwood Legion [DARK]
Yak’s Bend
I am still waiting on the ability to set a guild only tag. It would allow us to run havoc easier as it wouldn’t show for the map to confuse, also when we do guild missions we don’t have to worry about to many tags in a pve map
