Leader of the FC Vanguard Initiative(RIP)
Some random guy in [EDGE]
I am a WvWer from FC in t8(that’s right t8 haters, I am back) I 80ed my main, and I learned a great deal of information about wvw from some more experienced players in my organization(shout out to Meilin Feigal and Rhulian/Tadsoul) learning this stuff has opened my eyes, and I realized that one of our most well known commanders either a) doesn’t know very much about wvw or b) chooses to be a complete idiot when in command. (What I want to know is, is there any way i can get peoples attention without a magical blue arrow?) Normally I would not have a problem with this, but
A) EVERYONE that is either new to WvW or is looking for something to do blindly follows him
B) he has only one tactic: Zerg randomly around the map, upgrade when there is no supply, and leave the tower with no defenses to easily be retaken
C) interferes with my ability to lead( I am not trying to whine) every time I get on and there are no commanders on, my main is semi well known enough to assume quasi leadership for awhile, but when I am in the middle of taking something, lo and behold, he magically appears and all the new/less experienced players go “ooh shiny” and follow him randomly.
I cannot remedy the situation by becoming a commander, as I am sitting pretty at 6g right now, with only 4/6 exos
Is this a rant?
No, this is a question
What can I do?
Anything I can do without the tag? As I stated I have approx 6g. I would prefer not to play the tp for money because I play this game for fun, not economics

You could try to show the commander the error of his ways, not sure how effective that would be.
I really do not think he is accustomed to listening to anyone for advice/criticism, he is now the most well known player on FC, but that doesn’t mean that he is the best

xD
U made my day ><
And that happen in all tiers, in fact, the more the tier the more it happen. U need to teach them, and some (just some) ppl will learn.

Go buy some gold. The exchange values are quite good nowadays
Continue trying to teach them(him), if nothing else try lead without the because even if a Tag name recognition of whoever it is helps people listen and or follow. Because i don’t have a tag but i can get some folks to follow me now and then when there is no / few / unknown commanders on the field. Helps if you can show / drop your own siege to help control &or organize folks to.
Hey, fellow T8 player from SF here. What I’ve found to work with regard to leading without the Cool Ranch Dorito above your head is to take a couple weeks of being vocal (but not disruptive or indignant) in team or map chat. On top of that, taking your time to periodically update commanders who are online with enemy movements, vulnerable defenses, potential hotspots, and other important scouting info will help you develop a better working relationship with your community. With time, the WvW regulars will come to value your name and leadership. With that sort of valued role comes their trust, and it only takes a group of 8-10 core regulars going about for others who don’t play WvW often to tag along.
Once you’ve built that reputation to a certain point, you’ll have no trouble asking for volunteers to get a small to medium-sized group for larger objectives. Past small to medium sized groups, especially in this tier, cohesion is kind of a wash. Sure, you might have 20-30 people following you, but they’ll seldom actually listen to important instructions like ’don’t autoattack the door’ or ‘food buff on me.’
TL;DR: start being a vocal participant in map/team chat and provide useful information. Build a reputation and people will follow.
Get a tag, then people can put up posts about you!
I suggest you do instances with your friends so that you can have your full exo set and so that you can get easy cash if you really want to have an easier time, you can let that guy learn from his mistakes while you rack up cash. Because imo it is really hard to lead without the blue icon.

When I wanted my tag, I started at 8g. In 1 week I had my tag, and I didn’t have to play more thakittenhours a day on a week day and like 8 hours on the weekends. I basically just farmed AC and CoF, salvaged my rares, etc. I was able to farm upto 80g in that time, and then got some donations from guild mates, and a couple people from my BL. If you really want your tag, you can do it you just have to be focused that week on getting your tag, and trying to not spend extra money!
As for what you can do…just try to talk to him and whisper and tell him what you think

the guy is beyond any rational thought. all he is is an ego and a pocket full of money.
saying this as a servermate whos worked with him before, or rather … worked around him. because there is no such thing as teamwork with this guy.

i know who you are talking about LMAO. yea get ur tag and bash on his guild. he will turn off his tag and chill at the wp talking kitten. works everytime

I think we have those people on every server.I know atleast 2 – 3 on FS i will not follow, because of this reason.Bloated ego, arrogant, unwilling to accept help, thinking they know best when clearly, they fail. When winning, doing something good it’s “I did this, and I did that,I took that tower" but if something goes wrong its “You guys did this and you guys messed that up and you guys lost the tower”.If certain commander are unwilling to work with me and unwilling to accept any help or tips, reports, talking like They do all the hard work and neglecting all the players who actually did it all..then i will not bother following them. It’s simple really. But if you wanna do something about this problem yourself, you know the answer…its to get a tag,i did the same.
Wait it out, in the end ppl will learn who to follow and who not to follow. Running along a guild works better too since they will listen to the guild before listening to the commander (mostly). Use his stupidity to create distractions while you do the real job.
Is going to be hard to get people to follow you if you are low on funds. Not sure how much siege you have but people aren’t going to be happy if you ask them to follow you then make them throw siege at every point. Then there is upgrading captured camps, towers, and keeps.
Also a good way to get know is to do the important things that nobody loves to do-like upgrading camps and making sure supply get to those points he is taking. Calling out and scouting enemy troop movement, and taking small groups to capture enemy camps and starve supply while people are focused on the zerg.
Farm craft CoF1 fractals run a guild donation scheme… Buy that tag
Failing that, lead your guild ikittenerg on voice comms, have yourself marked by your groups using ctrl+T, and randoms will follow your ball of players to shiny things anyway.
Generally the zerg follows the one who gets them plenty of exp/karma, unless they are a truly inspiring leader who clearly knows their mustard
Here is what you do: I did and still do this on ET in tier 8.
1. Be very vocal.
2. When no commander is on start using caps once something is about to be taken, like MOVING TO PANGLOSS NEXT
3. Be the first to head in the direction you want to go.
4. Some people will give you crap about the caps, ignore them once you lead people to enough EXP they don’t give a crap if you are throwing poo at them, they will follow.
5. Be assertive, but not overly assertive.
6. Get use to absolutely crappy commanders, every server has its share.
In my case I led for about 1.5 months without a tag when I first got to ET. Before long people would follow me even if a commander tag would show up. A couple of the commanders really just started following me after awhile. I even still will lead without my tag on when i’m alting.
What I want to know is, is there any way i can get peoples attention without a magical blue arrow?
The short answer is “no”.
The longer (more contradictory answer) based on what I’ve personally seen is:
TL;DR: start being a vocal participant in map/team chat and provide useful information. Build a reputation and people will follow.

This is all pretty good advise. #2 from Gilkin is oh so wrong, but strangely it works oh so right.
If I HAD to select one thing from above it would be the references to communication: be constructively vocal. Do it for long enough and the regulars will become familiar with you.
[edit] One more minor thing: stick to one character (or stick to names that are very similar if you’re using alts). I give each of my characters distinctly different names which I think hurts me overall in WvW when I’m trying to get help because people might not know “Hecates Wraithmere” but they may know “Victoria Myth”.
