I still don’t get why the Commander rank is bought using gold, instead of Influence and/or Badges of Honor.
Now, instead of players with support behind them, and actual proved group management experience, we get nobodies that farmed gold for the title and guilds with internal conflicts over donations and who should get it.
It could be good, too, to lock the rank to the guild, and let it transfer between the members with leader permission.
Am I the only one who thinks the current iteration of the commander rank needs a lot of improvement?
technically it should be influence if you ask me…. something like 500k influence or more
because you can spend 20g and get 10k influence, so 200g is 100k, and 1,000g is 500k. it puts it sorely out of reach of PvE champions (well…most), and makes it attainable by guilds that do WvW more often than anything else
I really think it should have been linked to guilds & Influence. The price should be high enough and linked to WvW in someway.
Why they made it gold instead of influence is beyond me.
Well it was one of the early weeks of GW2 when we saw a Commander.
2 days later i told everyone what is commander – best money sink created by Anet nothing else.
Thats why its so expensive so it can remove large amount of money out the players and make them buy gems

I’m hoping that all the stuff about Anet being “shocked at how popular WvW has become” is true and a lot of changes are coming. Mostly in some sort of a PvP point system with titles/ranks and skin rewards (along with lots of stat tracking). This could also be tied to commander in some way.

Yeah I could never understand why they made the Commander status was bought with gold. People can basically buy gems with $$$, then buy gold, then buy Commander and just troll the WvW zones.
My idea would be to allow Commander status purchasable with only Influence earned in WvW….This is because normal influence can be farmed the same way gold can be farmed, which defeats the purpose of changing the currency in the first place.
It’s no mystery.

My guild tends to run around 7-8 people for WvW, and being so small we can’t afford commander yet and just have to use voip for parties larger than 5. When we do get commander it would be nice to still be able to have our private crew, grouped in game mechanic without being a zerg beacon. And yeah it should not cost gold, influence and/or badges of honor.
It was a stupid decision, whoever made it.
Commander books are mainly useful for helping disorganized servers get some organization together — it’s a tool for pugs.
Making it cost 100g has made WvW less fun for pugs (soloers and small guilds) as frequently there is no commander on the map.
It should be an Art of War research, costing influence.

There should be guild commanders. Guild commander should be a guild upgrade, once complete it can be assigned and re-assigned to people in the guild, but never more than one at a time. Most guilds just want to have a grouping system for their guild, not lead a zerg.
Guild commander – upgrade and only visible to your guild. Can be assigned and re-assigned to anyone in the guild, but only one at a time. This way as people log in or out you can always have a guild commander .
Regular commander – 100gp and visible to all players.

I’d rather have them be 1-2k badges of honor. There’s not reason to JUST limit it to guild leaders.
100 g is cheap. By Xmas, you will see lots of them. The reasons it is purchased by gold are:
1) influence is super cheap. I don’t even consider this as valid currency. Guild can earn influence by just having members login in everyday, which is surely botable and can easily be exploited(multi-guilds).
2) BoH is account bound.
3) 100g means you and your guildmate really have to commit something before you can spam the map with blue icons.
YPC, your claim that 100g is cheap does not mesh with your #3 claim.
Also, #1 is a bit off. The amount of influence generated by the login bonus is trivial. The huge bulk of influence comes from members completing events. Ideally, the Commander’s book would be a 3-day consumable that has to be constantly repurchased, with an influence cost of, say, 5000. A moderately sized guild would be able to run 2-3 of them (at some expense to buffs). Anyone could buy or bot the influence needed, short term, but they couldn’t keep it up.
Only real guilds with real players would be able to keep it going long-term.

Login (Attendance Check) is not trivial. 1 player can have at least 5 char. Each char give 10 influence everyday. 40 players have 200 char give 2000 influence everyday. That means your guild can have free commander book for just having 40 guildmates doing nothing but login. Not to mention player can still hire workshop to farm commander book, which you still have CCC but only cheaper.
100g is really cheap. Once you hit 80 and master all crafts you want to master, you know what I am talking about. It is even solo-able in half year. It merely serves as a small proof of commitment and a mean to stop spam/abuse.
