Commander's Compendium needs to raise in price
I agree with the final comment but don’t agree with the others.
100gold is high, yet realistic and attainable even by small guilds. I think you misrepresent what a commander is. They’re used now to lead zergs around, but realistically they were intended to be for guilds moving around together, not the entire server.
should be something your guild has to research and work for instead of simply having individual players buy gems and pop out 10 commanders in a single night.

I saw some pic of WvW posted on these forums and there were 5 commanders on the map.. wut
One thing is what they should add that you can switch what kind of visibility your commander flag has, Off, Guild, Squad and All or combination of guild+squad – this would help a lot so not everyone would zerg after you if you are running guild team around the map etc or just want to be private and do your own harassment with few other peeps.

100g is fine…… having to pay just “gold” is not.

Because everyone has nearly 500$ to just ‘buy’ commander with gems.

I thought the limit was 4 per map? Are you sure?

I think it was the 4 biggest zerg-commanders are DISPLAYED on the map. As in..top4 with most members. Something like that
Multiple commanders on a map is not a bad thing, you can see what the other teams are doing, where they are, and coordinate strikes on multiple locations much more effectively.
I’d have my guild buy 30 commanders then xfer servers. Greifing at its finest.
There is a CAP of 6 commanders per map.
When player join a commander eg his squad he do not see other commanders on map.
If there are 7 or more commanders on map the 6 that have most players in squad will be the one visible other wont.
Works for me as long as they add a FREE way to group with 20 people or less. I should have to pay if I want to be a commander and lead a large army in WvW. I should NOT have to pay to simply group with guild member overs 5 people.
Add a free raid style grouping system for up to 20 people. Not being able to group with over 5 guild members is stupid. We shouldn’t have to pay to simply do stuff with guild members, there is a place for both a 20 person raid group AND a commander and squad system.

you can already play with 20 people or less
I’d say my guild comes in as slightly above average in terms of guilds population and participation in WvW, we have around 45 members, with 5-15 usually in WvW each night. We have 10 80s yet we’d be a long way short of affording the 100g right now. Considering we are a month into the game, I think 100g is a fair price and I wouldn’t want it to be any higher.
We’d like a commander so we can better organise our folks and not have 3 or more teams unable to easily see where we’re headed. Obviously VOIP helps with this, and we manage fine, but it’d suck to be nearing the 100g and ArenaNet suddenly bump it up to 500g or something. It would be unreachable for ~3 months for most average sized guilds.

There should be a currency dropped for each wall/gate you destroy (not badge of honor) and then you spend that currency on it. Not the fail currency that is gold.
How to solve this:
- Implement the system you mentioned, about the price raising 2g by each person who buys it.
- Add another restriction, where you need the top tier achievement in WvW title to be able to purchase it.
No. This is a horrible idea, It should be unlocked by achievements, of course and the fixed price gold.
I purchased the commander book to get my guild into larger groups. What I didn’t expect is for every newb in the zone to come running to me. I was in voice chat with three guilds, calling out direction movements for an orb attempt and I get some idiot standing next to me calling me a noob for not “helping the server” because I was standing on a hilltop and not leading the zerg.
There should be at least a disclaimer on the book that says “warning: noob magnet”

Sure you can play with 20 people, just not effectively. If you’re implying that trying to run with 4 separate groups of 20 players using ventrilo or teamspeak is effective I’d have to strongly disagree. It’s either commander/squad or fumbling around trying to use the horrible in game grouping system for over 5 people.
There needs to be a way to EFFECTIVELY group with friends or guild members over 5 people that doesn’t involve spending 100gp. Grouping with guild members should not be difficult and right now it’s next to impossible…. some sort of multi-group system is needed.
Commanders for large scale grouping, Raid system for medium size grouping, party for small grouping.
My problem with the commander title is when you have people that have no clue at all as to what they’re doing leading majority of forces on the map. Also the people that refuse for their zerg to be split up into smaller groups.
You do not need 50 people to cap a sentry point.
You can solo cap an undefended camp if you’re pro enough, 5 people should be able to handle it.
Increasing the price will just make it harder to obtain for the small yet talented guilds.
So I’m all for having some sort of skill prerequisite. Sadly tactical genius is something that would be hard to turn into an achievement. Just seems that currently the person with the biggest bank gets to lead the server (for better or for worse).

^ What Slamz said. Make it a researchable with a high cost but low production time that upon completion, gives the compendium to the guild master, who can then distribute it to whoever he sees fit.
And refund all existing compendiums to.
I really don’t like the commander titles in their current state. 80% of the commanders on my world are either hardcore PvE gold grinders or rich kids who bought the titles with gems and converted them to gold (I’m not joking).
One of our commanders on SF talks in all caps, yells at people to follow him, and runs to a random area and says “just kill kitten” as his strategy. He acts like a 12 year old when criticized by WvW regulars who are the real commanders by definition, not title.
We have another commander that never talks, ever. He’s one of those mindless zerging folks who just follows the group and never says anything or listens to any orders or strategies. The problem with this is everyone thinks commander = leader and they all follow his insignia on the map. This commander once lead a group of 40-50 players to the orb altar at the top of the borderlands map, but the orb was already in our own keep. Despite this being obvious, everyone followed him there and began killing the respawned Orb Defender NPCs.

This …should never have been something you could just buy that really diminishes its credibility.
Shame they don’t have some requirements to must meet before you can even use one a wvwvw test of sorts? Perhaps they can give it to you on a trial basis and if you do not succeed its removed and you have to research it all over again at a much higher cost?
Make people prove themselves and earn the right to use the badge, now that would make lot of sense and would remove doubt that those people on the map should even be leading.

should be something your guild has to research and work for instead of simply having individual players buy gems and pop out 10 commanders in a single night.
I agree with the reserching part. Only guilds that have researched a certain level should be able to attain an icon. On the other hand, if you want to buy gems, you’ll need either tons of gold or tons of cash.

Completely agreed. What can prove more a player can be a good commander/leader compared to a strong guild behind him/her?
The thing is alot of guild groups would want the extra group slots but wouldn’t want to appear on the map for a zerg to follow around.
And there are actually some pug players out there who are willing to coordinate and work well with guilds and actually enjoying leading the pug population around the map.
I’ve seen terrible guild leaders with it, I’ve seen amazing pugs with it. The problem with the thing is there’s no kitten protection on buying it.

What’s happening is guilds are pooling money to get a commander just so they can ALL GROUP TOGETHER! They don’t actually want to lead the realm, they just have no other options to make multiple guild groups. So you have people leading that aren’t knowledgeable or even want to lead… they just wanted to run around with multiple guild groups.
Until something is added for guilds to group up over 5 people you’re going to see lots of this.
simple solution:
1.Display different colors (or icons) for different functions the commander(s) were running. ie. He was running a guild group, make it red. His group was open for pubs, make icon blue…
2.Add a commander rating for each of the functions, where each player can only rate once per commander per function, and only rate commanders they had joined (different functions = separate ratings)
On a separate note
Commander’s group should be invite only. Clicking decline is becoming VERY annoying! I had to constantly click it off to get away from that, and it doesn’t feel good having to decline people nonstop.

As another commander I have to say I really enjoy this idea, a rating would fix so many issues with most of the commanders on my server at least. Now my one concern would be commanders getting into fights, and having their guilds down vote the other commander.
On a side note, I’m just glad I have the power to turn it off!

I think some of you are missing the point of a commander. The commanders should be for the benefit of the server, not so your guild can get a squad chat to talk amongst yourselves… Use guild chat for that. If your guild doesn’t want what you call “PUGs” to join you, then you don’t need to be using a commander icon. You can assertain the purpose of the commander icon by the way the commander icon was designed.
- The commander cannot control who is in his/her squad. Anyone can join and leave and any time. (/squadjoin, /squadleave… there is no /squadkick or /squadinvite)
- The commander can use /squadinfo to see how much supply the squad has.
- The commander icon shows up on the map and is visible to anyone who is not in a squad (except other commanders).
- The squad caps at 50 players, far less than map cap.
- Commanders can place squad waypoints on the map.
- Players cannot see other players in the squad like you can in a party.
- The 10 largest squads on the map are the only ones show on the map (Stated by a dev after BWE3, but I’ve heard reports that this has changed.).
The commander icon is about being seen on the map. If you’re going to sit on a cliff somewhere and direct others around, then you don’t need a commander icon. It does no one any good to see you standing on a cliff.
The icon is most useful in displaying where the commander of a group is so that everyone knows where to meet up. This is great since everyone in the squad can only see one commander icon… Their commander’s icon.
All commanders can see the other commanders. This allows the different commanders to easily coordinate with each other and can tell where the other squads are.
Everyone in a squad should be sticking together. If you have squad members scattered around the map, then your squad is not working very well. The supply report from /squadinfo won’t report anything useful.
Squad chat is only useful for directing members of the squad. If there are things happening outside of the squad’s location, then it will be better to use /map or /team so that everyone is aware.
Ideally you will have 3-6 commanders running squads around the map. Players defending points do not need to be in squads. My server runs 3 squads on a map. These squads are run by the big guilds on the servers, and the players who are not apart of the main organization are free to join a squad running around and to jump on TS3 with them. I have yet to see any commanders that are not working for the betterment of the server, and if there were bad commanders, it will be quickly aparent by the /map and /team chat. Most of the “PUGs” on the server know which commanders they should follow and are happy to join in on the action.
Last point: Commander icons should never have been achievement based. That means that there would be no commanders on the map for the first month or two and this would hinder server performance. 100g is fine.
