Commander squad not working?
You don’t get a larger group, you just get your own chat channel. /squad. They left click your name with their map open to join the squad.

Their last comment…
The maximum size for a squad is currently 30
also:
Squad commanders can use the map to place waypoints (Although these are not the ones you teleport to) and specific commands, e.g. to designate a regroup location or the area to begin an attack
I see no option for such commands, neither can we make a larger group as they obviously state on the wiki…
I would not have farmed and paid 100 gold for a stupid chat option…
Commander badge also needs to be able to restrict invites. Its not desirable for guild commanders to have random people and potential spies join and take up spots for guildies.
Also there needs to be filters for the visibility of the badge. On and off isnt enough. Need to be able to set it to members of selected guilds can see it but none else. Doable if you in the guild system adds the possibility to add allied guilds. By using that Database layer you can easily add a restriction option of commander badge visibility and function to allies only.
Commanders can get their own chat channel (/squad) and are able to use it as an effective way to coordinate groups. No large party UI is used for this system. You can also mark the map with special beacons by holding down the ALT key while clicking anywhere on the map. This will bring a box up that allows for different beacons to be placed.
We’ve seen a lot of feedback regarding the commander system and what to add to it next, so keep the constructive feedback coming!
Suggestion: Replace the commander icon with the guild’s icon. There are a lot more commanders now and it’s hard to keep track of your commander.

Why does your Wiki say people will be able to make a party with up to 30 people in it? thats the only reason why I paid 100 gold for the commander upgrade.
I tought it would be cool to make a party / alliance with 30 of your guild members, so you can make a large group and have fun all togather.
Basicly I just threw away 100 gold and all the admins would say if I would make a ticket is “bad luck, cant help you”.
The guy or woman who posted that information on the wiki was clearly not knowing the facts straight, and the user has to pay for it (me in this case) cause they pay the crazy amount of 100 gold for something (in my eyes) which is totally not needed since 90% of the people I know (my guild for example) uses TeamSpeak or what ever communication device to talk and coordinate people.
So please remove that false information from your wiki and I hope you guys will get your stuff straighten out cause this is no fun at all. I could have gotten a load of crafts to 400 with that 100 gold which I (my personal opinion) just threw out of the window.
add to my last post (sorry, something went wrong):
- Instead of the commander icon, perhaps a guild icon (optional a standard icon for people who dont have or want a guild logo to be displayed)
- Being able to make a bigger party (guild members only) and or and alliance with other parties which consist of guildmembers.
- Being able to decide who can see your commander logo
- Perhaps being able for members to spawn to their commander, but not in all situations i.e. when conquering a castle or what so ever or while fighting or near a fight. This would make them have an advantage over other people in battle, so only when just walking around and not near a battle or while capturing something.
- Perhaps it would be cool to have some rivers in which you have to dive deep to some sort of underwater castle which can be conquered, or an underwater cave where you can submerge and fight for a castle or something.
Other then the commander wiki data that was false, or misleading… awesome job on the game and love how you guys ask and listen to your players! Thumbs up for you guys!
I’d love for the option to respawn in a keep/tower etc. that has my commander present. It
@GroundZero:
You don’t seem to know how wikis work.. You can edit the page yourself if you think it contains information that is incorrect or misleading. Anyone can edit articles on the GW2W.
Personally I can’t see anything on that page saying you can have a bigger party. It only says “The maximum size for a squad is currently 30.” Squads and parties aren’t the same.
You do realize ArenaNet doesn’t actually maintain the information presented on the wiki, other than a few specific situations from the GW1wiki, right? It’s player driven. If there’s wrong info, don’t blame ArenaNet. Blame the players, and go correct the information.

You can create a party/squad with upto 30 people in it.
- Create squad in the party menu
- Players then join your squad by right clicking your name and selecting “join squad”
- You can now place markers on the map by holding “ALT” and left clicking the map to bring up the menu of symbols
- Type /squadinfo to get a list of members in your squad, showing who has supply and who doesn’t in addition to showing number of personnel in your squad and total supply available
- Type /squad to speak to your squad
So far that is all I have been able to work out (There needs to be a command list on the wiki or in the help menu for this ImO)
I’m really hoping that more functionality is added to the squad commander in the future updates. It seems very bare bones at the moment. Useful but could definitely use improvements. what would i like to see added?
- minimalist party ui that covers 30 squaddies
- squaddies showing on my map just like party members do, I want to know where my scouts are and where my supply runners are (and where my AWOL members are)
- more clickables and less chat commands. There should be a squadinfo button or keybind so I can get info on the move.
- the ability to remove squad members
- the ability to invite people to my squad
Agreed. The UI also needs work. Commander all in all is a good idea that isnt well implemented in a way that actually is useful to players practically.

Exactly this…thats for topic creator who is kinda clueless what commander is…
I can add more, squad is not meant to be for guild..thats why u have those ppl in guild actually, squad is now more like to invite there several party leaders so u can coordinate the effort on the battlefield, u can put there simple icons with attack and defense (which were a bit fusy tho)..
and as some feedback, would be cool to have more functionality as the quoted user said.

By joining a squad, you lost the ability to see other commanders. So it is useless now. A commander should lead not the squad only, he needs to lead the whole map . So chat is not usefull atm…

Thanks for your reply <3
When I press “P” button and select to make a squad it says “You are a commander”. I also receive an icon as passive buff.
But when I try to invite someone, or people try to join I get a pop-up message saying:
The party of guild is full!.
There is no option where so ever to select “invite to squad”. The only thing displayed is “Invite to party”.
Can you explain that to me? cause I cant seem to get it working
Maximum I can use / get is 4 people (5 including myself).
About the wiki… I know people fill it and not ANet but it is THEIR website and the way I look at it. They could have at least 1 moderator checking stuff to prefent false data. Besides that, what if someone would post a flaming post? if they ignore that you could post (for example) rasist stuff or other stuff that would hurt people… so I am sure someone is checking the stuff that is posted / edited so they could at least keep an eye, or try to, on stuff like this since it costs 100 gold.
I am sure I am not the only one who found the info on wiki misleading.
Best regards

Uff, I guess, the most simple way for you will be finding a video about it on youtube and there are some…(starting to doubt your ability to be a real commander tho…)

Really hate the fact anyone with 100g could become a commander. It’d be much better as an Art of War research boon. Perhaps 24 hour research time, 24 hour duration and only one guildie can be a commander at any one time.
Also update the map’s commanders icons to show guild emblem.
The problem i’m seeing is that we have commanders who aren’t actually very good at it, barking orders at the zerg and even fighting with other commanders over tactics. It’s not really working.

Nothing to do with abilities mate, so either talk some sence or dont say anything at all.
If the game does not work as it is meant to (that is, if you can invite more then 5 people) then it is not my fault obviously.
So far there is NO WAY to invite more then 5 people (thats including your self) into a WvW party.
The commander and squad system is NOT what guilds are asking for.
I could go in detail, but it’s the same information that’s been posted since BW1. We just want to be able to group with more than 5 guild members at a time and the commander system is NOT the answer.
Sometimes we don’t want to coordinate our entire server, we don’t want random people joining our guild events and we don’t want to have to pay 100gp per character to do it!!! How many people in a guild are actually commanders? And what if those person(s) don’t happen to be online….. you’re out of luck?
You need a FREE way for guild members to group up over 5 people. A raid system for up to 20 people. Heck even make it a guild upgrade, but charging 100gp for a single character just so guild members can group up is frustrating.
We had money donated from our guild for our first guild commander but one of our officers had his account hacked and the money was taken. So now we’ll have to raise the funds again… the game has been out since Aug 28th and our guild still can’t group up with more than 5 people.
Yes there should really be a guild option similar to commander.
The “man this sux” is the instant buyer remorse of Commander Tome purchase.
The Commander Tome was pretty much a big disappointment imo. The idea of a Commander commanding a squad is kinda off and a bit limiting. Commanders command Army’s not squads.
30 people chat, that’s a bit small for what a server can field on a map. The Commander in my guild does not even bother with squad chat and instead use’s /map and /team. It is far more effective to coordinate forces. The only thing 100g and a Commander Tome gets you atm is recognition on the map. That is a big deal but seriously underwhelming compared to what I expect A.Net to develop.
The /squad thing needs to be done away with pronto. Please implement /Company or /Regiment or /Battalion, what you think fits better. This is far more appropriate for a Commander and it should be able to hold the max players a server can have on a map. Any player or party leader (which is a squad btw) should be able to right click the Commander and join the Company. This then enables /Company chat and it should at the same time show the location of ALL soldiers in the Company on the map.
There should also be a UI for this, one that can be toggled on and off. The UI should show all soldiers of the Company and allow the Commander to designate Platoon or Squad leaders who can ping the map, mark way pts etc… as well. The Commander should also be able to assign players to a Squad.
I also think Commanders of a Company should be able to communicate with other Commanders who are on other maps. Actually any player on any map should be able to message a Commander no matter what map he is on to provide intel on those maps. So a Commander badge should show up on all maps when you zoom out to see all 3.
The above is what should happen and what I expect to be made in the future by A.Net and would thus be worth 100g.

In this day of MMO advancement the IN-ability to group with friends or guild mates in a game called GUILD Wars 2 is frustrating. Even changing the commander and squad system isn’t the solution. We need a raid style grouping system that anyone in our guild can use at any time.
Paying 100gp to group up together IF the people who actually have a the commander tome are online is ridiculous. This is something that is needed in the game now…. not 3 months down the road.
You should refund all those commander badges and restructure the entire system, because it royally sucks.
1) Implement a Raid grouping system or something similiar to the “Warband” system used in Warhammer online. Grouping system for 20-25 people showing dots, health bars, custom chat channel, call target and waypoint marking.
2) Improve the commander and squad system using feedback from the users on these forums so it can be effectively used for more than 20-25 people for large scale grouping.
3) Allow people to exchange/sell Commander Tomes back to the NPC for 100gp if they choose to once the changes are made.
Its really annoying squad only works with selfinvite, why cant I invite players myself?
Hopefully the C&S system get some love in the March update. Seeing as it’s the only way for more than 5 people to group in GW2. It need some flexibility to form private or guild only squads…. especially with the new guild missions coming.
Kinda hard doing a private guild event when everyone in the zone joins your squad and flocks to the pin.
Digging up a 4 month old thread, still no progress on this front xD
Thirty people I do not find to be enough people fora squad, I often come across times where my squad is completely full and no one else can join. I also would like to see a feature allowing me to see who is in my squad.

anet works slower than officials in europe lol
I fail to see how implementing a better squad management (UI, invite, etc) takes more than like 25 development hours including testing.
It would be nice if you could invite a garden. When you click on a commander on the map, however, that “join squad” command does not work. You have to physically click on the commander in game and right click their portrait, then proceeding to press “join squad” in the list.
Regarding squad size, it is capped at a maximum of 30, which is unfortunate since I thought the entire point of the squad was to not have a size limit. It is, however, possible to see who is in your squad and how much supply they each have and how many of those squad members are not in the immediate area by typing /squadinfo. It is also possible to see the number of players, their names, and the amount of supply they each have in your immediate area by typing /supplyinfo. Remember that supply info has a range of approximately 2 feet so you literally need everyone to stack on top of you in order to see the real supply count and numbers.

The simplest change I’d like to see is different colored icons. This would allow some designation of who’s doing what when multiple icons are on the map.
Apart from that, something similar to the Warhammer system was what I expected form a squad, but at this point joining one really has no purpose.
The squad has a size of 50 player. i regualary get that full when i do morning zergs.
just wanted to trough that in there befor i start explaning what i want.
most important part for me is that player that are in a squad see eachother. Like i can mouse over guys that are on a wall because i see there points on the map and say in teamspeak that xx and xy should assist player xyx in his doing there. It would also give players a reason to join a commander. Because right now nobody does use the map marks besides guys that are organizing guildzergs and thats everything that is profitable for the zergling. I gain alot of numbers by forcing guys into my squad and its realy helpfull. But its not as easy as it should be. people cannot even join over the click on the minimap what would be the easyst thing to do because that feature is perma buggy. But thats a topic mayn guys here allready rambled about.

I think we can all agree that we’re not satisfied with the current commander and squad system. Some really constructive feedback has been given since BW1 and I hope the devs have had the chance to sift through some of it.
I gain alot of numbers by forcing guys into my squad and its realy helpfull.
The best and easiest solution is if anet made it so commander icons do not show up at all unless you are a member of their squad.
And we really really really need a /joinsquad slash command. Having to run up to the commander, target them, right click and join squad is just dumb.
I think it would be helpful to have an identifying color to the members of a squad for those who have joined, and maybe at the very least some quick links to number of squad members and total amount of supply, this way you have fast info on hand without a large UI to deal with, and avoid playing to the UI. Also an option to have the icon only show to your squad members or the map would be extremely helpful.

This..
It was simple
You start with a party when it filled up to 6 people typed /warbandconvert and 24 slots would open up
/warbandallianceonly
/warbandguildonly
Set permissions for guilds or alliance member to join you.
You could see all your members dots on the map.
Warhammer had one of the best raid / grouping system for PvP multiple groups. I’d even be happy if they allowed you to “hide” the commander pin AND still retain all the functions of a squad. Basically a private squad.
At this point I’ll take any system that allows 2-4 groups to coordinate better in GW2 without leading the zerg or relying only on a 3rd party Voice program.

Great Idea and have been suggested MANY times in the past. There is just not enough flexibility in multiple groups to coordinate in GW2 right now.

Wow, zombiethread! This is something I find completely crazy though, so I am going to go ahead and comment anyways.
Here’s a screenshot from EverQuest 2, a game released 9 years ago.

Notice how there’s windows identifying groups, a way of seeing who the leader of each group is, and even a way of seeing who the raid leader is? And this isn’t even the oldest one. A similarly helpful (more helpful than GW2’s) system already existed in EQ1 farther back than that. Couldn’t find a clear enough image on a quick search.
How hard could it possibly be to replicate a decade old system? And if you wanted to make it really useful, allow the commander to re-organize the parties him/herself, invite and kick people from the parties, and see where everyone is on the map. Add different icons to the commander tag too, and give the commander the ability to assign rally points to specific parties.
Also, why does joining a squad shield you from seeing other icons on the map? That is crazy talk. My guild often organizes to control multiple objectives on a map. No one joins squads because it cuts the flow of information on your map. And finally, having to type /squadinfo to get that info from my squad is insane. That should be on the GUI somewhere for me to see – like right next to the names and HP bars of everyone in my squad so that I can see who the idiot is that didn’t supply up when we had the chance, or if a supply camp has left us short before we roll to the next objective. Make the tool useful for goodness sakes… It cost enough!

The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
I just do not understand why the squad system was developed without a UI in the first place? Seem’s like such an obvious need, not to mention pretty much a standard for recent MMO’s.
Perhaps their intent to play as a giant blob was planned from the start, dont need to organize a squad if you want everyone to run along face rolling their abilities for the win.
1. Give people a reason to be in the (3500) area of a commander (Badge bought buffs like guild buffs for WvW claiming)
2. Commander can see all squad members dots anywhere on the map and colored Green=Alive, Blue=Down, Red=Dead
3. Commander assigned tasks to a max of 5 people (all five promoted to “Camp Killer” extra Wxp for doing it in 5 minutes
all of this would be made easier of course with a simple UI like the Contacts panel (Y) we have already; you could see Who’s in Squad, Amount of Supply, and right-click to assign tasks/see what tasks they are available for.
IMO a commander isn’t one who throws down siege, builds siege, and jumps into a zerg hoping to live. A Commander commands other people to do that :P
but it’s pretty solid in players mind to follow the blue icon. or if no blue icon go into PvE.
P.S. knowing how much supply your squad has should be automatic!, No Typing /supplyinfo No opening a UI it should just be on the screen.
please keep necro’ing all these old threads, they are full of great ideas for the TESO developers
how about a separate chat option for all the commanders on map?
This is an awesome thread… lot of great ideas, even after being necro’d there’s still a lot of great input… keep it coming folks!

Repeating some of what others have said, but putting it all of my favorite suggestions in a bulleted list:
Desired Options for commanders:
- Gold Commander Icon – When someone joins a squad their commander’s icon shows as gold, but they are still able to see the other blue commanders on the map.
- Icon Visibility Options – Commanders should have options to set their icon to On, Off, or Visible only to Guild (many PvE guilds use the commander icon to help a large group stay together during various events)
- Squad members show on map – Squad members show up as gold dots on the map (as party members currently show in blue)
- Squad Info Panel – similar to a Guild Roster showing members, supply, class, zone
- Kick from Squad Option – Commanders should have the option (in the Info Panel mentioned above) to kick someone from the squad
- Commander Chat – A chat channel just for commanders
~ Yak’s Bend ~
Amy, +1, and if I may add…
Allow for Co-Commanders who have some of the “command” options that the Commander has… such as being able to draw on the map, kicking/removing/adding members, access to the Commander chat, and supply count check.
In this way, a Commander can focus a lot more on leading… and have his lieutenants help with running the Squad. We actually practiced this in other games… freeing the “commander” from some of the administrative work of the squad, and it was a great way to train up new leadership at the same time.
