Q:
So, you can buy siege weapons for badges at the rate of 1 badge = 1 silver.
But you can’t buy commander manual for 10k badges.
Why?

I personally feel that commander should not be purchased just by gold, it should have some badge and wvw accomplishment requirements. A commander should have vast experience in wvw to be able to lead well and not anyone who just farm the gold while pve or buy gold to be commander.

Vast experience is no guarentee too leading well, people soon learn whay commanders know there stuff and which are just laughable, I play on Whiteside ridge and tbh theres 2 maybe 3 who are any good, a lot of mediocre ones and 2 or 3 who are truely truely terribad.
True but at least after certain number of wvw badges and wvw accomplishments along with certain amount of time spent in wvw, the commander definitely know what’g going on compared to a pve guy that never play wvw before.
Accomplishments are out of question.
The only thing I want to know is why not badges? It’s WvW currency, and commander title is a part of WvW mechanic. It’s just seems odd to me.
Because the people in the best position to get an icon will be those who put the most time and effort into farming badges (a non tradeable currency) instead of gold.
If you are a commander you won’t get as many badges as someone who does the jumping puzzles round the clock and shows up with their leet micro wherever there is the highest concentration of newbies.
A commander should arguably be looking at their map and not get so bogged down in the micro game, otherwise you miss crossed swords, neglect your teams operating elsewhere on the map and lose perspective of whats really important. Getting tonnes of badges is not important.
The only currency you need to get an icon is influence amongst your peers. You build up influence by spending alot of time in voip and taking the initiative to organize something. If you have the right temperament, people will follow you.
You exert enough influence and people around you who collectively benefit from your presence will donate however much money it takes to get you an icon.

i think it might be because you can get enough badges solely by doing the jumping puzzles. granted, farming the cash in PvE isn’t much better of a system (if even better at all).
if it’s a title that’s able to be bought, people will always end up avoiding the process of learning how to do the job properly, and focus solely on farming whatever currency it takes to get the blue dorito. through the easiest means possible. they’ll come into WvW say “I R a liter!” form a zerg and get it wiped over and over. there’s a 50/50 chance at that point, said "liter"will rage and blame the people following him, often using gratuitous misspelled insults. word will pass around the regulars that that particular “liter” is a clueless imbecile, and shouldn’t be followed under any circumstance, but new players won’t have access to that warning and will still fall prey to the trap.
basing it off of achievements is a bit better, but if someone has been doing WvW long enough, they’ll probably end up getting the achievements at some point anyway. and that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re fit to lead. however, it does imply that they know the gameplay and are familiar with the maps. which is a good first step.
if that’s used as a first step, then there would need to be a second one. i’d suggest having them, at that point, be open to an “evaluation period”. whereas they get a trial dorito. the trial dorito would be a different color and shape (maybe a trial frito, or trial funyon?), and would allow them to test commanding, and allow those they’re leading to rate their performance. there would need to be a few categories, such as: tactics, organization, personality, etc. the trial commanders would be able to see a review of the rating they receive, so that they would know which areas they might need to improve on. once they’re able to maintain a certain rating, say 75/100, over a set period of time, say 5 trial attempts, they would graduate up to being a full fledged commander.

I agree with you. I just asked my question out of curiosity. As I said, it’s kinda odd when you can buy siege weapons for badges but can’t by the icon. It’s not like farming badges is somehow different from farming gold.
Guess I need to ask Anet through support or something…

You have a point. And I’d love to see rating/loyalty system in the game, since there’re always 2, maybe 3 good commanders and all other just bought their title for PvE zerging and know nothing about WvW whatsoever.
I think the entire commander system should be scrapped. Allow for anyone to form raids and let people that lead, lead via communication, which is the essential requirement for leading, imo.
The icon’s for the most part just confuse noobs. As someone that WvW’s a lot I know who is worth listening to, who is not, and respond accordingly. A lot of casual or new folks to WvW, or the people that simply have no ability to determine good from bad, do not have the experience to make that decision and suddenly you have various people following competing commanders that refuse to work together.
I think I have more commanders on block then I do gold spammers.
Ehh, I guess its because gold is fungible and badges are not. If you have influence and people are willing to donate money so you can buy an icon, they can just mail you the gold. Badges are account bound.
It has a point, but how many got their icon by this way? Well, besides those who got most their “influence” from guildies.
Most common ways are still:
I must admit, I did have to shout at a commander for being destructively indecisive. Commander badge for only 10K badges I completely agree with.
Dude, I’d much rather spend my badges on siege blueprints than stockpile them up. It’s counter-intuitive to make a commander title cost badges even if it sounds like a logical process.
